Sorry, but you HAVE to see this.

Holy eff.
Look at this effin' sinkhole in Guatamala.
Eff.
I think the earth is just going to gobble us all up.

I think the sinkhole has to do with the tectonic plate shifting (kind of like an earthquake) and the ground becomes unstable, esp where water tables lie (think the nashville TN flood) and the ground shifts downward.  I THINK that's right.  I should probably wiki it.

Ok, normally these types of sink holes are caused by some sort of cession (that could be wrong, this is off the top of my head). There are pockets of liquids all over the world, water oil, natural gas etc etc. Once the pocket empties, whether due to human interaction, ie- pumping oil or water for consumption or natural forces, ie- techtonic forces such as an earthquake that allow the pocket to void, the surface pressure becomes greater then the pressure in the pocket, allowing a collapse.

    Does that help?

It's terrifying to think that the earth could just, literally sink, beneath us.

Not exactly - but it was a good effort!  You could have said aliens like most non-science people :)

My mom called me and asked if she should be worried that it is a perfect circle.  They're always circles.  I think that's to do with Physics, which is not my specialty.

Sinkholes form when soft rock under the surface dissolves.  Eventually there is not enough support for the surface material, and it collapses and a sinkhole forms.  You get large ones like this is areas with a lot of limestone and precipitation.  North FL gets sinkholes of this size too.

Ana- I believe the circle has something to do with it being the most efficent shape. Hence, why the earth is spherical.

Even scarier: there was another one in the same neighborhood in 2007. This one killed 3 people.
