How do you all deal with work distractions?

Morning ladies!

So its the last few days of my sales quarter(Friday please get here!), and I usually work from home "dialing for dollars" as my boss likes to call it during that time.  I'm typically in and out of my car all day or home alone any other day.  The internet is usually my only distraction when I'm alone.

But apparently my apartment building is working on an elevator, and the constant banging is driving me insane!  I would rather not work from a Starbucks due to the amount of phone conversations I'll have with customers and it would be too loud and unprofessional for a business conversation.

That being said, what do all of you do to distract yourself from work distractions, noises, crazy coworkers?

  • I have an office so I can shut my door and it's usually pretty quiet, so I can't complain.

What type of work do you do?

  • I work in an open cube system.  So, I have headphones with me at all times.  It seriously helps when someone next to me starts crunching.

  • I'm in medical device sales.  I have a home office, which means that I start and end my day here.  My corporate office is out east and I have only been there 3 times in the past 4 years.   My days are spent on the phone/computer with customers or either in my sales territory at the customers locations (doctors offices, labs, etc.)  My customers are all within driving distance.

So to answer tarra's question, on some days, I do work from my couch.   If I'm running reports and calling customers I set up my work laptop, my personal laptop, and both my phones from its coziness.   The other days I spend a lot of time and miles in my car.

  • Tarra, it is a pretty cool job.  I enjoy what I do every day even though its crazy this time of year.  Its pretty rewarding knowing the products I sell can change lives.

Pee k, thanks for the headphones tip.  I might just have to try it.  I have the radio on in my car all day.  Not sure why I didn't think about the same for at home.

  • They are building a building right outside my window. This is an old pic, it's currently up to four floors which is where I am.

I'm pretty god at ignoring the noise, but some days, it's ridiculous. At that point, I normally go for a walk to get a soda, or if it's REALLY bad, I move into the conference room, which is an interior room. I think peek's suggestion is a great one. I need to try that!

    Still here and still fabulous!

  • Tiger, I think you win for biggest noise distraction!  That would drive me insane.   Thankfully my elevatory repair was a short job!

  • I was given my own room at work instead of being at either one of the nurses stations because I can't have people bothering me when I try to work. Fortunately my manager understands this.
