AW: We booked our Honeymoon :)

After lots of deliberation, FI and I decided to use our timeshare in Cabo :)  The resort is absoulutely beautiful <LINK> and I love that it's only like a 2 hour flight, that way, we aren't exhausted from our wedding, then have to spend the whole next day on a plane.  Anyways, glad to have another thing crossed off our list...now it's on to finding excursions and dive ops, then we should be all set :)

Anyone else get anything exciting accomplished recently?  WR or not?

NICE! We wanted to take a Mexican cruise or a Panama cruise, but we're not sure anymore since all of the violence in Mexico that has happened recently. Because of that, the cruise line that we use, Royal Caribbean, has eliminated and limited the cruises that they do to Mexico. We might do Hawaii. FI wants to do an Australian and New Zealand cruise, but I don't really want to have to fly for 22 hours to get there first.

I picked up my veil today on my lunch hour.  Does that count as exciting?  I didn't really find it that exciting...lol

Very exciting for all of you!  Happy to hear about the "checks"!

I do business with Mexico all the time, so let me offer a bit of perspective - the violence is located in the northern part of the country, specifically the northwest, focused in the state of Chihuahua, as well as some spots along the Pacific coast in states like Sinaloa, Michoacan and Guerrero.   The Yucatan peninsula (where Cancun and Cozumel and the Riveria Maya are all located) is no more dangerous than it was 5-10 years ago - the violence isn't happening there.  It's like saying if there was violence in New Mexico, then you shouldn't visit Ohio - it's geographically so separate that it's silly.

The cruises are cancelling trips not because it's dangerous but because Americans perceive it to be dangerous so they're not booking those trips.  Less demand, so the cruise lines cut down on the number of trips.  If they thought it was truly dangerous, they would have cancelled all cruises there all together.

Cabo's not unaffected by the violence, as it's on the Pacific coast in Baja California.  But the resort areas are the ones most dedicated to maintaining a safe environment so they don't lose business.  I'd say just be smart and take precautions - don't take a taxi from the airport, set up travel arrangements before through the hotel.  Don't leave the resort area unless you're in a tour group.  Don't get in a taxi at all unless the hotel calls it for you - that's a big scam in Mexico for kidnapping.  If you want any more safety advice, let me know.  I don't say this to scare you - I'd go to Cabo myself if given the chance with no worries - but it does earn a bit of extra caution.

Thanks calindi.  We've heard lots of tips for going to Mexico and have done lots of research.  (Plus, living in Phoenix, we probably see more of the Mexican drug violence here than places farther down in Mexico).  We aren't worried since we know how to be smart about it, and we know several people who have been there very recently and said they had a blast and never felt unsafe, they mentioned that the resorts are very good about recommendations of places to go and places to avoid.

I know we'll have a blast...plus I LOVE Mexican food and I'm excited to guiltlessly gorge myself on it all week :)

Congrats on setting the date and booking the venue!  That was one of the hardest decisions for us...so it's definitely a big step!

I just booked my honeymoon last week Nov. wedding buddy. We are going on a Mexican cruise and one of our ports of calls is Cabo. Looks like we will be in Cabo at the same time. We will be doing port adventures at all of our ports of call but we can not book them until 75 days before the cruiseFrown.

Other than booking our honeymoon I also bought my wedding shoes (click).

We (and when I say we I really mean me) also made our save the date cards this weekend. We are having our reception in the private dinning room of a restaurant at Disneyland so we wanted our save the date cards to be Disneyland postcards. I heat embossed the back with our info. I had the stamp custom made online. Sorry they are a little dark.

Jem, stop getting ahead of me! You're making me look like a slacker!

I'm driving myself batty with HM stuff. Too many choices. Cancun/Riviera Maya, or Jamaica, or Republica Dominicana? My coworker also suggested Belize, which I haven't looked into yet. And the more I look, the more the prices creep up (as I get more picky). Now I want an adults-only all-inclusive (and FI wants ocean view).

I found a good deal through the 23rd, but FI doesn't want to book yet.

True story.  Just saying, if you happened to find one, it's not at all dangerous.  Or you could just skip the cruise and fly straight there - there's some good deals to be had since a lot of tourists are scared off.

I'm not worried about it being dangerous. I just wouldn't go to Mexico if it wasn't on a cruise. I don't like flying, so we'd drive to LA and take a cruise out of the Port of Los Angeles. Since RC cut back, it's more limited on the ones we can take that leave from LA.

Coco, this is essentially what I think we'll end up doing. That or going to Glacier National Park. In either case we'll likely be camping - we'd rather camp and hike than sit on the beach drinking and trying not to get our white asses sunburned. I mean, don't get me wrong, all the HMs listed above sound really awesome, just not necessarily our style :)

cschiano - our dream HM would be Italy or Greece, but i think it costs slightly more than Colorado.  ;)

we're looking at cabins and B&Bs and i've signed up for LivingSocial and Groupons in the area that we're thinking about going.  i'm hoping we can get some fun things lined up to do without paying a ton of money.

i'm not really a beach person, but i'm not a hiking/camping person either.

Well by mountain retreat I just mean a little vacation into the mountains. Very quiet, low key. When I went out to Alberta, we did a lot of sightseeing, but they had hot springs there as well so we went to one which was super relaxing. There were boats you could go out on lakes, paths you could go walking along (not hiking because I'm not a hiker). Things like that!

There are lots of hot springs in CO. I went to one in a town called Sulphur Springs. . . I wouldn't recommend that place, but I hear there are a lot of other good ones.

leia- we were starting to look all over the place too, originally we were leaning towards an AI in the Caribbean.  But we bought a 'trial' timeshare that gives us 2 weeks total, but even just the week we are using for our HM is well worth the money (we don't plan on buying the 'full' version of the t.s. though), We are already paying for it monthly (it will be paid off by our HM) so we figured we might as well use it for our HM.  So that's really the only reason we actually have anything 'booked' (we don't have flights yet).

cocobella- we are definitely going to do a bit of diving, and we are looking into a few other excursions like kayaking/snorkel trips to the arch & lover's beach (or maybe jetskis), turtle releases, maybe ziplining (we've been in Hawaii and PR, I like it, but FI is kind of 'eh' on them)...we also definitely want to do a few spa treatements.  We're still looking into all of the activity part right now, but it looks like there are going to be lots of cool things to try...

Coco- There is a Hot Springs, AR.  Jeter went there for their HM so you might want to talk to her and see how it went.  I lived 30 min from there all my life and it was always one of my favorite places to go!

Also, If you are a military member you aren't allowed to go to Mexico.  So for those of you who have military spouses, I'd be sure to check into where they can/cannot go!

Thanks jemmini, I can't wait for them to come in. I can't believe I was able to get them on sale because usually my shoe size (6.5) is one of the first to sell out so I hardly ever find shoes on sale. It was just dumb luck that I stumbled on those shoes.

I had originally wanted blue shoes as blue is my favorite color and it is one of our wedding colors but my mom was not having it. I made a compromise with her though. I told her I would get ivory shoes if she made me a blue crinoline and she agreed. It worked out well so we are both happy.

coastie- Why can't military members go to Mexico? I'm just curious.

My mom is okay with colored shoes, but she's sort of throwing a fit because we don't want to do the bouquet/garter toss.  She'll live though...
