Atlantic City Recommendations

Hey ladies! I know there are some NY/NJ/PA/DE natives around, so I thought I'd ask for some advice about AC.

A little background info...I always get BF an "experience" instead of an actual gift for his birthday. A while ago, he mentioned wanting to go to Bobby Flays restaurant in NYC, but I know there's one in AC, too, so I came up with a long weekend there as his birthday gift. We could do the steakhouse, and he's never had a massage, so I want to get him one of those, too.

 So, my questions are;

1. I originally wanted to get a room in the Borgata, because that's where the restaurant is, plus it's supposed to be the best. However, I just found a living social deal for the Trump Taj Mahal that would get us a larger mini-suite for the same price. Plus, it's right on the boardwalk and the Borgata isn't. Which should I go with?

2. We're going to be there Sunday-Wednesday at the beginning of October...what kind of activities would you suggest both nightlife and day time stuff? Any must try restaurants other than Bobby Flay?

 3. Anything else I'm not thinking of/should plan for?

 Thanks in advance!

PS. I'm on my phone, so sorry for the formatting...I'll get on my computer and fix it in the morning.

Re: Atlantic City Recommendations

  • I'm not an expert on AC but the last time I went, we kind of 'hotel hopped' on the shuttle they have. I don't remember it being expensive to take but that way you could do dinner at Bobby Flay's (which is amazing, by the way) and stay at the Taj Mahal on the boardwalk. Even if the shuttle thing doesn't go directly to that hotel, it probably goes to a hotel next door or something nearby that you can walk from.

I know a lot of people love the pool at Harrah's. I've never been, though, so I can't speak from experience.

Sounds like you have a great time planned!

  • I don't go to AC a lot and if we do we only stay over one night.  I only have ever stayed at Harrah's and Showboat.  Both are nice.  I would stay at the Taj get a bigger room there are lot of cabs, buses to get around and to get over to the restaurant at the Borgata.  I like being on the boardwalk to check out the other hotels.  I love the pool at Harrah's.  That's all I've got.

    Anniversary

  • Thanks ladies! I made a rough outline of when I want to do what, so I'm pretty excited. It includes the sports bar with the $5 40oz beers (I've been there before and it's...awesome) for Sunday night football.

I have used the jitney before, and it definitely gets you around well. I think it's like $5/day, so I'm sure we'll be using that a lot.

I think I'm going to go with the Taj Mahal for sure...I really like the idea of being on the boardwalk.

  • I would definitely stay on the boardwalk. It's really easy to get between the hotels. My bf went a few weeks ago and took a limo that was waiting outside the Borgata for $20 to one of the hotels on the boardwalk. It might be fun to do that if you're having a special weekend.
  • I'm stalking this thread! I think BF and I are going to stay in AC Saturday night. I've never been before but he has, and I'm excited! I suck at gambling, but he's a pretty good poker player, and I love to watch.

Okay, I only periodically lurk around these parts, but I had to register and jump into this topic because I LOVE AC more than any non-retiree should.

    1.  Where to stay:  Saw that you chose the Taj, which is a good choice I think.  The casino is fine, the rooms are clean, and it is super-fun to be on the boardwalk.  There is a small amusement park on a pier right outside the taj, but it may be shut down for the season by the time you get there.  In any case, the boardwalk is great for a morning jog or an afternoon walk!

    2a.  ACTIVITIES:

    *  Check the casinos' websites to find out what shows are playing while you are there.  AC draws an impressive amount of star power!

    *  See if you can get a one-day pass to the Harrah's pool, or else just try to sneak in.  It's GORGEOUS.

    *  Not sure if your SO is a shopper, but there are great outlets in Atlantic City.  Also, the Pier Shops are a fun destination (huge shopping center built on a pier that extends pretty far out into the water).  There's a water show at the very end every half hour (or hour?) and there's a Steven Starr Continental at the top that has a lovely view of the water and good food.  (which brings me to...)

    2b.  FOOD:

    *  Chef Vola's.  I'm pretty sure this restaurant is run by the mob, but it is delicious italian food and the probable mafia connection only makes it more exciting.  They have a yelp page (pretty sure a fan created it for them --- their website is password protected) so you can get their phone number from there.  Make a reservation as far in advance as possible.  Cash only, BYOB.  In somebody's basement.

    *  White House Subs.  An atlantic city institution.  Don't go to the one in the Taj; go to the one on pacific avenue for the authentic experience.

    *  Revel, the new casino just a few casinos up from the Taj, has a TON of amazing restaurants (and is just a good destination in general).  BF and I went to the tapas place there and adored it.

    *  For 24-hour cheap eats, I like Duck Town.  Decent food, especially when you want full dinner at 3am.

    *  Ruby Tuesdays.  Just kidding.  Don't go there.

(just by the balance of activities/food, I'm sure you can tell where my interests lie)

    HTH!
