Hurricane

New Jersey governor Chris Christie just delcared a state of emergency in preparation for Hurricane Irene.  My best friend's brother who was in the army was contacted by the NJ National Guard to see if he would be available for duty.  The media is FREAKING out over this storm.  

For those of you on the east coast that will be affected, are you taking it seriously or do you think it's a bunch of hooplah?

Yeah I'm honestly wondering... for those who live in FL and the SE beach states.... is a category 3 hurricane as big of a deal as the media is making it? From my perspective, in AZ, it looks completely scary and I'd be high-tailing it outta there... but I also feel like I see these almost every year on the news. Thoughts?

A friend of mine is in Jacksonville and said he was enjoying watching the storms last night.

As for me, eh.  Whatever.  I think I'm far enough inland that we'll get some rain and some wind and a tree or two might fall over, but I'm so not worried.  I tend not to get worked up about weather though.

Yea I heard that too! Hoboken is really really bad though (remember the sinkhole?).  I'm waiting for it to fall off into the Hudson to be honest hahaha

I think Saturday is supposed to be okay & the bad stuff is coming late Saturday & Sunday.  

They showed earlier that supposedly when it hits us it'll be a cat2 with 100mph winds.  I just can't help but wonder if they're totally overreacting as you know the media does from time to time.  

What floor are you on?  Apparently the higher you are the more at risk you are.  Are you doing anything to prepare??

I think Katrina was also a Category 3 when it made landfall in LA.

I actually enjoy hurricanes and kinda wish Irene were headed to the Gulf Coast. I mean, I don't enjoy seeing people get hurt or lose their homes; I just like the wind.

I say we are all better safe, than sorry. My friend was already planning to crash at my place this weekend, and now it looks like Norfolk will be hit hard... So I'm glad I have the apt. here to offer her. PLUS we are going to see The Help! yay!

Media loooooves this stuff. I recall watching the news during the blizzard that hit us a couple years ago and laughing at their excitment about the storm. ahh

Also they are evacuating parts of VA apparently? My friend said her parents are scooting outta town, just in case!

I live in FL, not that far from the East coast. I would definitely keep my eye on the storm. Category 3 is what Charlie was and when he hit in 2004 we were without power for 3 weeks! 3 flippin weeks! And I lived in Central-central Florida at the time. There were lots of downed trees, flooding, roofs ripped off etc. and the homes here in FL are all built to handle that kind of stuff. So yeah, I would definitely take it seriously as it gets closer. I wouldn't necessarily run from the storm, but I might stay with family for peace of mind and especially if I lived in a much older home or an area that is prone to flooding.

You can always hope that the storm turns more to the east, and doesn't effect you quite as much.

But Katrina wasn't really all that damaging. The flooding, which started after the storm was pretty much over, was caused by a design flaw in the levees and pumps, not the storm itself.

I'm not that worried about it, but I also tend to worry less about these things than a person probably should. Like Liv said, I have emergency stuff on hand anyway, and I don't plan on running around the state that day, but I tend to think they are making more of a deal out it than it will actually be. If it does end up being pretty severe, BF and I should be just fine hunkered down in our first floor apartment in central MA. I will, however, make sure nothing that I love is in the basement or the shed, since our property has flooded before and it wasn't pretty.

Elle, me too!!  If I could, I would go down to my mom's this weekend because she's right near the beach to watch it roll in.  

The only thing I keep thinking is they predicted really bad weather this winter, declared a state of emergency early, & we had that blizzard.  So they were pretty dead on with that I think!

I am expecting heavy rain and winds Saturday night into Sunday. Not evacuating NYC, as some people are saying.

Maybe. Ike was a 2, almost a 3, when it hit Galveston. It was freakin' enormous though.

I was living in southern Louisiana when Katrina and Rita hit, then Ike hit about a month after I moved to Houston. There should be a big one in Mississippi any now.

Ditto! I get kinda excited about weather - as potentially creepy as that sounds. i am looking forward to watching the storm out of my window. I just hope it doesn't destroy anything.

I know nothing about hurricanes. I'm too far inland. I'm next to like, Lake Erie and that's about it. We get tornado warnings occasionally, but we haven't had one actually touch and do damage for such a long time where I live.

Thing I hate most about hurricanes is loss of power. It's deathly hot in south louisiana, where I live, and i have literally cried myself to sleep with lack of A/C. I'm not a pleasant person to be around when the power goes out.

Wilma was a 3 when it hit the Gulf Coast of Florida and was a 2 by the time it crossed the state to Fort Laud...Fort Laud didn't have potable water for 4 days and didn't have electricity for over two weeks. I wouldn't freak out over it, but I'd definitely keep an eye on it and make preparations if it looks like it's going to hit you directly.

I wasn't suggesting that a Cat 3 isn't a damn strong storm. Like I mentioned in another post, Ike was only a 2 and it was one of the costliest storms in history.

Okay.  See.  I can't be around you people.

I think the only thing that's starting to worry me (and we should be fine...) is loss of electricity.  We aren't connected to city water/sewer, so I think if we lose electricity we lose water.  Stupid well pump.

We're right outside Norfolk and everyone here is flipping out.  For good reason, the last hurricane that hit was a cat. 1 and people lost power for 5-11 days.  It also floods here every other thunderstorm.

There are currently no evacuation orders for the state of VA, but BF & I might be getting the hell outta dodge tonight if the track stays where it is.

you know, living in OK we don't get hurricanes, but we get a LOT of crazy F4-5 and EF4-5 tornadoes.  it's one of those things that you just take seriously, "just in case"...

I am interested to see if it is as bad as they are predicting.

scary to read!!  I've never experienced a hurricane, and I'm glad. 

however, one year we got a tropical depression leftover from a hurricane that picked up intensity and turned into a tropical storm... the first one EVER in OK.  I think it was hurricane Erin, about 4 or 5 years ago.  crazy flooding and winds.  I can NOT fathom a full-force hurricane.
