2 questions about The Hunger Games

I saw The Hunger Games on Friday night. I totally loved it and I'm looking forward to reading the books. Since Friday, I've been doing a lot of random reading online about the movie and I saw something that confused me.

Now I can't remember where I saw this, but it said something like Katniss and Peeta only pretended to be in love in order to get tools/supplies/medicine from people watching the games. I'm confused because it was never said in the movie that they were only pretending, and they never discussed it themselves in the arena. Can someone clear this up for me?

I'm also confused about the man with dark hair and the intricately shaved beard. When he was in the room where they were 'constructing' the game, why did it seem like he had it out for Katniss?

Re: 2 questions about The Hunger Games

  • Those are things I think you definitely don't fully understand until you read the books.

Haymitch basically tells Katniss that the whole "doomed love story" thing is a great selling point and that she should play it up.  That will get her more sponsors (and thus more gifts) and increase her chances of survival in the arena.  Peeta's feelings for Katniss are all genuine, but Katniss is conflicted.

The weird beard guy is Seneca Crane -- the head gamemaker.  It's his job to make the Hunger Games as brutal and "entertaining" as possible.  He doesn't necessarily have it out for Katniss any more than he does for any of the others -- he just wants them all to die ugly deaths.  Until the end, of course, when Katniss beats the system.
  • Thanks for the clarifications, Elle. I was told by another friend that I will understand everything much better once I read the books. I know that every movie/book combination is that way, but these particular things were just bugging me and I'm getting impatient. I'm waiting to read the book during my spring break in two weeks.

    Haha, thanks!

At my bridal shower last weekend, my hosts made me play a version of the Newlywed Game.  I didn't know it, but they has sent all these questions to FI the week before and I was supposed to match his answers.  One of the questions was "What were you wearing the first time you met?"

The person reading the questions was like "she'll never get this -- it's too weird" but I said "A judo gi!" immediately.  It was funny.
  • And yayyyy for having another LSU person around!  What are you studying?
  • I'm studying Communication Disorders/Speech Therapy. I like it so far. I'm a Junior so I'm just now getting past all of the intro stuff and getting into the more interesting classes. I'm REALLLYY looking forward to the Fall because that's when I get to start all of the big girl classes Smile

My intro post is on page 6 of the "Getting to Know You" thread if you have absoloutely nothing better to do.

Yeah, I saw that you posted on the intro thread, but I didn't bother trying to find the post.  That thread's always a mess because so many people post in it but then never make another post.  So I just ignore it most of the time.
