But I'm 20!!

Okay, got ya - this is not a "but I iz growner than I seem" post. I'm getting REALLY annoyed at people thinking I look so much younger than I am. I know I'll appreciate it when I'm older, but for now, it's SO annoying.

I was at the doctor this morning, and the only seat left was next to this old lady. She says hello, and tell me that my dress is very pretty. I say thank you and go back to reading my book. She then says, "Where's your mom?" I look up, surprised, and go, "Excuse me?" She then tells me, "You look a little young to be here on your own. What are you, 13, 14?"

Clearly offended, I go, "I'm 20." I thought her jaw was going to hit the floor and her dentures were going to come flying out.

*sigh*

    I get that too!  I got carded at a rated r movie recently...I'm 23....

I'm not THAT offended, but this is the 3rd time it's happened in a one month span. I just don't think I look/dress like someone who is in the seventh grade.

    Oh, well. Whatcha gon do.

I get that sometimes...never to that extent though.  When I go out to bars, sometimes the bouncers will check and re-check my ID. They say I look like I'm 18.  Oh well, I guess it's not that far from 22.

Depending on what I'm wearing and if I have my glasses or not I've had people card me.  The legal age here is 19 so they assume I'm younger than that, but I'm actually 24.  *shurgs* It's annoying but it happens.  Some day we'll be thankful for it...I suppose.  lol

You will appreciate it when you're older. It's true, I swear!

I blend right in to college classes full of 19 year olds, and it feels damn good! I rarely wear more than sunscreen and chapstick on my face. If I'm feeling spunky I might do some mascara. WOOOOO, dangeous! Innocent

I'll be 27 next month, and you know what? I still FEEL 21 at heart. It's pretty awesome.

my nanny is 25 and people often think she's in high school.

i imagine that would be annoying.  i get mistaken for being in my mid to late 20s fairly often but at 33 i'm just fine with that!!  :)

I get carded every time I buy lottery tickets (which isn't very often at all, so maybe t's been 3 or 4 times). It's kinda funny when they see my age. One cashier started laughing and said something like, "I never would've thought you were old enough to drink!" Eh. Curse my Asian genetics. Wink I'll still be looking like I'm in my early 20s well into my 30s. One of my cousins is 31 this year, and she still gets confused for a teenager.

My friend has been teaching online courses at a college in DC while living here. She recently moved back to DC and is teaching a course in person. She went to the campus to get her ID card and they asked if she was an incoming freshman. Not encouraging when she was nervous about teacher her first class in person.

Ah haha. That's hilarious. That reminds me of one time when I was living in So Cal in my own apartment, and a high school kid knocks on my door and asks "Hi, are your parents home?" I told her no, and shut the door.

But I'm 20 too!! Argh. I get confused for being much younger all the time as well. So frustrating! I've been tiny my whole life, but I don't think I look 15 like I am usually confused for. I dress my age; I do not wear Hello Kitty t-shirts and sparkly hair clips for crap sake. I fail to believe I will be happy about this when I'm older (like at 30 when I'm still being carded for liquor...the drinking age here is 19).
He pretty much had me at "hello".

This also doesn't help matters when BF doesn't shave, and people mistake him for being in his late 20s-early 30s. A few people have thought he was my dad. THAT'S disturbing.

Someone approached me at work the other day and asked what I thought about a gift for their daughter's 8th grade graduation and said "because you're around that age, right?"

...uh. no. i'm not. thanks, though.

BF looks older than he is and I look younger than I am.  We get weird looks in public.

I understand the annoyance of this ~ I've always been mistaken for younger. People I work with are shocked to find out that I'm turning 30 next year. Also, was very regularly asked for other forms of ID when necessary.

Agree with Jeana ~ you will come to appreciate this and accept it as a compliment!

I went to a rated R movie a few weeks ago with no make-up on. I got carded for the movie. I'm 26. So what if I still get pimples? I also have wrinkles. I need to have a conversation with my face.

My same friend who was asked if she was an incoming freshman, used to sub with me. We were subbing in a middle school and she was standing outside of the classroom greating the kids as they came in. She happened to be standing in front of a locker and the hall monitor approached her and asked if her locker was stuck. She was mortified. My poor friend. She looks young, but not 13.

It goes both ways. I'm 30 and get carded when I go places that require it. I actually don't think I look that much different than I did in high school. BF looks a bit older than 30, but that's mostly because he went gray early.

A couple years ago my best friend and I went to a Paramore concert where it seemed most of the attendees were in junior high. One of the parents asked BFF if she was there with her kids. She replied "I'm only 27!"

Yeah, we felt old at that concert.

I get this a lot. Last summer I had two cops approach me and my bf when we were on some park swings and ask how old I was. I said I am 20, and a senior in college. One cop said are you sure about that? And shined his flashlight on my face, then gave my bf a look like he was way too old to be with me. I was annoyed that the cop seemed to not trust me when I said I was 20 but would not ask for my ID. I ran into literally a week later on my 21 run and he asked for it then. Helping out with freshman orientation on campus this summer people expect me to be a freshman.

i begged my parents to let me start school when I was four. They had me tested and apparently I was smart enough that i started school at four. But being a late August baby I turned five a little after I started. So where a lot of my friends who were also August or September babies had to wait until the were 5 turning six, I started early.

I've been both ways: No one ever carded me for anything until I was 23 and shaved my head- then suddenly everyone thought I was too young to see R-rated movies!  I would never have guessed that being bald would make me look younger!

My 33 year old cousin got carded at Cinco de Mayo after they let me right in, so...  People are, in general, really bad at guessing ages.

People always think I'm younger than I am. I'm 20 but I get carded to go see R-rated movies, people always think I'm a freshman in my classes, and I blend right in when I am at my brother's high school. Its sad really, my brother is 4 years younger than me and everyone thinks he is older. But I don't let it bother me, all of my friends that brag about how they look older are going to be jealous of how I look younger in a few years. :)

Ya know..in a way I don't like being told I am younger. I am 32..now theres not one person who would assume I am 32 by most of my pics or irl. There are days I love it and others where I just want to be taken seriously. When I tell people in casual conversation how long I have been in retail ( 16 years) they just stop and stare and go..," How old ARE you ??" - and when I reply they are all shocked.

When I go into interviews people think I am 20ish - 25 at the most and people don't seem to think I can handle myself and just because I am soft spoken and quiet/considerate , people try to walk over me then get mad when I have a backbone , argh. I get carded and love that and all , but i'm old and still hate being called younger all the time !

I'm 28. I got carded about a month ago when purchasing a lottery ticket. Ok, I understand being carded to drink because that is a bigger deal, but really a lottery ticket that you need to be 18 to purchase?! I understand that a lot of people don't think I look 28, but I do think I look a bit older than 21.

I haven't been carded recently but I do get the "Oh, but you look so young" type deal. Like Jeana said, I TRY to take it as a compliment. FI looks older and when he was under 21 it would work to our advantage. We went to his work party a few years back and he was under 21 and after 9 they card people. We tried our hardest to get there by 9 but made it around 9:05. He was pissed it took so long to get there and how they probably wouldn't let him in. We tried going in anyways. They carded me (I was 21 at the time) and they didn't card him. :)

People think I'm much younger than I am, friends from my gym have told me that if they didn't know me they'd think that I was 20.

Earlier this year I was out for drinks with my colleagues and I got carded, it was really embarassing. Here are my co-workers (and higher ups) in their 40s/50s and I get carded. I'm 28 and the legal age here is 19. Most of the time I don't care and find it funny, but in front of my superiors is not a good thing.
  • edited December 2011
People usually think I'm about 22 or 23, last week on my birthday some of the higher ups were telling me happy birthday and and asking what kind of excitement I would be getting into for the occasion.  I replied ""eh, after 21 it's really just another isn't it?"  They laughed and said "Well that couldn't have been more than a couple years ago for you, you sound like an old lady!"  I said "Well it was 6 eyars ago" and they were shocked.  I thought to myself I've got a 3 year old and was married before and getting married again and they think I'm only 22 or 23 damn they must think I'm insane!

In general though, I take being mistaken for being younger as a compliment.  When I'm in my 40's or 50's and look a few years younger I'll be very thankful!  Thankfully FI looks young too, he has a baby face so we don't get awkward stares in public... haha.  His BF went bald years ago and his wife looks young... they get some looks!
