I don't have a very good memory

Seriously. I really don't have a good memory. I don't know what my deal is. However- I have to save- I have a very awesomely selective memory. I often don't remember bad and hurtful things, which is nice.

So I was thinking this morning about how much I remember from school. And then I tried to remember the most substantial thing from each grade. Here it goes:

(You may want to try this yourself before reading anyone else's responses....to see what really stands out in your mind without being "refreshed.")

1st- Making a paper mache pumpkin

2nd- Square Dancing
3rd- Working on computers that simulated a city; having a pen pal
4th- a Project on bats that my dad helped me finish
5th- a Mission project, where I made the Carmel mission out of grout.

6th- Doing a book report on Anne of Green Gables and feeling like it was an unsurmountable task:

7th- Having a surprise brithday from my friends. They got me a duck beanie baby and tangerine lip gloss- and many pixie sticks:

8th- Having Mrs. May tell me that I shouldn't bother trying to get into Honors English

9th- Reading of Mice and Men. Having my new english teacher tell me to test into honor's english.

10th- Testing into Honors English- reading the Crucile and the Great Gatsby over the summer for class:

11th- Going to Canada with the Marching Band:

12th- Taking Social Justice and doing a Hero's Journey project on the princess bride:

What do you all remember from those days?

I have an awful memory, too, but it can usually be jogged by a picture or someone else bringing up something that happened.

1st - nothing, but I do remember loving my kindergarten teacher and that a girl in that class did something in her pants that none of us was sure what it was. It wasn't sh!t, it wasn't vomit.... it was so weird. Sorry to be so graphic.
2nd - Doing a class performance to a Michael Jackson song where we all got to wear one glove. I LOVED my teacher, Mrs. DeMaria.
    3rd
4th - I enjoyed my teacher - Mrs. Loguidice. I met my BFF (my MOH). I used to meet my boyfriend, Brad, at the pencil sharpener because he was in the class next door and the pencil sharpener was between the two rooms.
5th - Tested into the gifted program so we moved into the Junior High. Did a project on amoebas. Had the teacher tell my mom I needed to start wearing a bra because the guys could see through one of the sweaters I wore. My grandpa passed away.
6th - Watching the Challenger blow up on live TV. Doing a project on midieval times where we each played different roles. I loved the term 'Fiefs.'
7th - I had my first kiss in the hallway between classes. My heart raced for 24 hours straight.
8th - Auditioned for the Nutcracker and made it (I was one of the angels). Got my period for the first time during one of the rehearsals.
9th - Made the JV volleyball team. Skipped my one and only class. Got caught, got detention. My principal later admitted to giving me a REALLY harsh penalty because I was one of the good kids. I was totally scared straight.
10th - Made out with a boy for the first time. It was awful. Joined the yearbook club.
11th - Got my braces off (happiest day of my life up until then!). Learned how to drive a car, got my license, played hooky from school for a few hours.
12th - Got accepted to UNC. I still remember opening that envelope. Kissed my best guy friend. It was awful. My parents had a surprise party for my 17th birthday. I remember every minute of it.

From grades K-4, all I remember is that the fourth grade teacher had candy and the second grade teacher had a flamingo mailbox.

From grades 5-8, nothing really stands out except my fifth grade teacher being silly and taping my hand shut around a note he wanted sent to another teacher. Oh and somewhere in junior high I started getting my period and a kid asked me why I had to go to the bathroom so much. I was so embarrassed, lol.

I remember being terrified to start high school and then so excited in 10th grade to start driving. Nothing much significant in 11th grade, lol, and 12 grade was when I was excited to graduate and really got out of my shell a little bit.

I have a seriously horrible memory. I can remember things if people bring them up or if I think about it long enough, but my brother remembers our childhood better than I do and he was a year and a half younger the whole time, lol. That's why I like to keep scrapbooks.

I think it's SO interesting hearing about what people remember! And DON'T. LOL.
I'm in this totally warm and fuzzy, squishy place lately...and I've been thinking..."I wonder what kind of things our future children will remember about being little?"

I won't add the things that have been jogged by my memory after reading Tiger's post, because I think it's interesting on what absolutely stands out, you know?

(Like my selective memory...Duh. My grandmother died in 3rd grade- the day before picture day. Those were my worst school pictures ever. But thankfully- that's not the first thing I remember about third grade.)

ETA: It's also interesting to see people remember different things...I obviously remember a lot of books, Liv remembers performances...

    Neat, right?

  • K - I went to a private school.  We did really awesome phonics work, and if you were really good all day, you got a prize.

1st - I started public school.  The school I was zoned for was not good.  I had already done the stuff they were doing in 1st grade in Kindergarten.  Went home crying ALL THE TIME because I got yelled at for staring out the window.  Changed schools to the place where my grandma worked.

2nd - Kind of a blur.  My class was a mixed 1st/2nd/3rd.   I got lice.  We dissected a rainbow trout.  My partner and I cracked the skull.  We moved from CA to VA in December.  Kids made fun of me for my accent.

3rd - We moved again halfway through the year.  Our lease was up on the house we were renting.  Changed counties.  My parents bought a great house in one of the best school systems.  I walked in on my first day to a surprise multiplication quiz.  I aced it.  Our teacher had all of us dress up and practice etiquette on Thursdays.  We made "sedimentary rocks" out of food - you made your layers, put a piece of plastic wrap over it, and stacked all of your books on top and sat on it.  I threw up in class.

    4th - I actually think I got glasses here.  :)

5th - My teacher called me Bambi for months straight.  Until my mother called the principal and told her that it was completely inappropriate.

6th - I started the IB middle years program.  Started taking German.  Met one of my best friends.  She and I would rock out on our German projects, turn them in on time, and our teacher would change the due date for everyone else.  He tried to make us watch a PG13 movie without permission slips.  And then blamed it on me in class when I got upset by the whole thing.

7th - Switched to an amazing German teacher.

8th - Was ridiculed for being skinny and not liking to eat in front of people.  They called me anorexic.  Had a major crush on a boy and got denied.  Ended up in the hospital that night because of an ice skating accident with a good friend of mine.

9th - Tried out for cheerleading with a broken leg.  Didn't make the squad.  Went anti-cheerleader, joined swim team.  Fell hard for Mast.  Met M and the rest of the group through Model UN.

10th - Moved to SC.  Hated EVERYTHING.

11th - Met a good friend who stuck by me through a lot of shiit.  We took AP Bio together.  And AP English.  And AP US History.

12th - Was an exchange student in Germany.  And that is far too much for here.

I LOVE this thread. I'm working on mine and will post this eve. Most interesting poster for sure.
  • 1st- I was in a co-op class where I meet my Long time good friend Sierra- who is also my BM :) I also meet a boy C who was a real jerk but I liked him.

2nd- I did art with this Co-op.  We also made go carts.  Those were so much fun!

3rd- I don’t remember.  I didn’t go to public school so a lot of things blend together.  Oh I must have started riding in 1st grade but I will put it here, started riding horses.

4th- Spending many days at Sierra’s house playing with our 200 toy horses.  We had a generation game which was awesome.

5th- Meet G at church and I finally didn’t feel like an outsider at the church.

6th- Started Higher Ground charter, took an awesome science class that I rocked at, interested me in space and the Earth.  Like about 5 guys at one point.  Played tag a lot, B always won because his legs were longer. Flunked out of my math class, Hated this one teacher, Mrs. Ginell also the principle.  Spent one month in Europe with my family which set me on the path for my love of Europe and Germany.

7th- Started SF, another charter school. Really learned how much I love to write poetry, and took a fun Biology class.  Took a Great Books course, against my will, didn’t do so well in that class.  Learned how to go to a school that had homework, that year was rough.  Many late nights of crying because my homework wasn’t done.  Oh and had my “first” “boyfriend” who dumped me for another girl.

8th- Became independent of my mother for doing my homework, became a straight A student.  Our campus moved to another location that was not located under the Chinese restaurant.   Took a trip with my class to Washington D.C.  Had a blast and really really enjoyed myself so much.  I love D.C. so much history and awesomeness.

9th- Started High School at the same charter school, nothing changed.  My parents bought me my horse Raven.  We moved at the end of this year 5 mins up the road.  Had a terrible English teacher who spent the whole year covering to Kill a Mocking Bird.  It’s a wonder I still like that book.  Took Latin outside of the school and still hated it.

10th- Got my only B in High school… in an art class.  Damn that final project!  Starting taking Latin at the school and dropped French.  Started worrying about where I would go to college. Became Russian Orthodox and made a new best friend B.

11th- More worrying about where I would go to college, kept changing my mind.  Wanted a boyfriend but no one would have me.  Feel more and more like an outcast. Was the star in the school play.

12th-  Meet FI :)  starting planning my gap year after High School.  Still didn’t know where I was going to go to college.  Visited a ton of colleges.  Started dating FI. Was the star in the school play. Went to Europe with my school.  Graduated from High school.  Left for Europe.

  • OOOO I like this.

    Kindergarten:
    - Lived across the street from the school, and got to walk to school every day which was SO AWESOME.
    - I got to go to the 1st grade for reading class. Kindergarten was on the first floor, and 1st grade was on the second floor, so I got to go upstairs. I thought I was sooo special.

    1st Grade:
    - Moved in the middle of the year. It was the first time I had to ride the bus, and one of the fifth graders taught me that I didn't have to run off the bus as soon as it stopped. I got really nervous that I would get lost if I didn't get off right away.
    - My dad adopted me, so my last name changed. I was the coolest kid in the first grade for like a week, because you only get a new last name when you get married.

    2nd Grade:
    - I had the messiest desk in the class, and used to get in trouble for it ALL.THE.TIME.
    - My teacher brought in these model horses, and when I was good, I got to put one on my desk during reading time. She gave me my favorite one at the end of the year.

    3rd Grade:
    - A new girl moved into town, and was in my classroom, and stole my best friend.
    - I was still in an advanced reading group, and read "Island of the Blue Dolphins." I painted a book jacket as a project, but got a C because I just recreated the original cover. I was so upset, because I thought it was amazing.

    4th Grade:
    - Got glasses. And a bad boy haircut.
    - Had my favorite teacher, the one I wanted, and she missed almost the whole year because she had cancer. When she came back, I went three days without realizing it was her because her hair was so short. I thought we just had a different sub.

    5th Grade:
    - Learned "50 Nifty United States" in chorus. I can still sing the entire song.
    - Had to go in early one day with my mom for the "Your Body" presentation. Girls were in one classroom, boys were in another. It was very awkward.

    6th Grade:
    - Thought middle school was the coolest thing ever because we got to change classrooms.
    - Played field hockey for the first time, and found out I was pretty damn good.

    7th Grade:
    - Had the weirdest language arts teacher EVER. Mrs. Seefeldt. She was crazy.
    - Same girl who stole my 3rd grade best friend stole my 7th grade best friend.

    8th Grade:
    - My sister was diagnosed with leukemia the summer before 8th grade. I spent most of that year with my grandparents. When I got my first period, I stole pads from my mom because I didn't want to tell my grandmother. She clearly figured it out.
    - Filled out a survey for a time capsule that was supposed to be opened at our 10-year high school reunion. I listed Tony as my crush. I got nervous just before the reunion about it. We didn't open it.

    9th Grade:
    - Had my first boyfriend, Paul. He kissed me in the hallway before ski practice. He was a senior, I was a freshman, it was scandalous. I hid it from my parents for about three months.
    - Got a part in "Anne of Green Gables." Got kissed on the cheek in the play by my crush, Josh. (Also a senior, and friends with Paul. I was already a ho.)

    10th Grade:
    - Was in the Gifted & Talented program for both art & English. I got to hang out in a classroom with other GT kids and do nothing for a period. It was AWESOME.
    -  Got to play varsity field hockey, and was on the track team. Realized that I like playing sports way more than I liked going to school.

    11th Grade:
    - Took senior English (British Lit & Literary Criticism) and Anatomy, which was supposed to be a seniors-only class. This is when I realized I was never going to be an athletic trainer/physical therapist, and should probably focus on writing.
    - Met Aaron, and wore his football jersey to homecoming. Broke up with him after football season... I just stopped talking to him. (I suppose this is karma.) We took the same driver's ed class in the winter, and he tried to win me back by giving me all his purple Sprees.

    12th Grade:
    - Scored the winning goal in the field hockey State Championship, but the ref said it was no good. We ended up losing in overtime. That spring, I set the school record in the triple jump, and it still stands.
    - Graduated 16th in my class. I thought this was awesome, because my number all through high school field hockey was 16.

  • I don't have time to rack my brain right now, but Lunar, I did the mission project in 5th grade, too. I think all of California does.

Mine was made out of sugar cubes with lasagna noodles painted red for the roof.
  • You guys remembered a lot of stuff, good stuff.

K - I remember moving half way through the year and starting at a new school that had 2 of my previous class mates in. Oh and the ducks! Our class raised baby ducks that year.

    1 - Starting speech therpy.

2 - getting in trouble because my friend wrote "hi" in pencil on my desk... lol and I cried. I also got hit/ran over with a bike which hit my face and it broke my cheek bone.

3 - getting pushed off the park and landing face first in gravel because I wouldnt be someones girlfriend. :/ My grandpa had a heart attack while we were at fireworks for new years and died :( My dad was taking him to hospital when he passed away. We didnt see him die.

4 - My bestie moved away to over seas by new zealand somewhere.

5 - I got grounded all summer cause i told my teacher to "fuc* off" on the last day.

6 -  I remember "graduating" to Jr high (middle school)

7 - struggling so much, they held me back my first year of grade 7. Second year still struggling and the teachers saying I just dont apply myself. :(

8 - found out i was full on dyslexic. That my learning issues "weren't my fault" and the teachers should have picked it up sooner. I got put in a special class til grade 10 to help with my learning disabilities.

9 - got in with the wrong crowd, doing some bad stuff. Thats all i remember of grade 9. My sister had her first kid at 16.

10 - got in a fist fight on my 16th bday. Was bored at school and asked to go to hard classes, they made me do an IQ test which I scored 138 on it and they claimed I cheated, made me re do another IQ test, which I scored 134 on. They still claim I cheated because my marks werent good.

11 - I entered rehab and foster home on dec 26.

12 - finished out the years with great friends and family.

I only remember the bad things lol.

  • So this is way more about me than I tell most people....

K - I remember the kindergarten teacher threatened to sit on me if I didn't go to sleep during nap time. I remember being afraid to go to school because I thought she was serious.

1st - My 1st grade teacher's name was Menconi, and I called her Mrs. Men Men Macaroni. I got caught and got in big trouble. My Dad put me in an archery club, I think because he wanted a boy.

2nd - I went to gymnastics with my neighbor every other day. We looked so much alike that people thought we were twins. To this day we are life long friends and still look alike. We had this secret idea that we were sisters.

3rd - I was part of a rocket building club after school, I was the only girl. My mom still has my rocket (which flew pretty high!). I got better in archery club. I beat all the boys.

4th - Had Mrs. Men Men Macaroni again. I pretty much died on the first day of school when I realized that she hated me. Started competing and winning state competitions.

5th - Meanest teacher ever, but that was the year I realized I was good at math and that I liked science.

6th - I tested into middle school math. 1st year I realized that looks matter and that I wasn't pretty and thin. Continued to win state competitions. Dad recognized my talent and got me into professional lessons with a real coach.

7th grade - I got made fun of for having braces, glasses, being fat, and having constant greasy hair. I had very few school friends.

8th - 1st boyfriend tried to kiss me and I ducked out because I was so nervous. He broke up with me for Laura J, because she told him she would kiss him. More teasing. Braces came off. 1st year competing nationally with archery.

9th - All of a sudden I wasn't as ugly and got attention. I didn't know how to act. I became terribly shy. I was completely afraid of males and was so shy I couldn't even look a male in the face.

10th - Went to nationals for archery, took 3rd. Became the high school champ. Still terribly shy with boys. Parents had marital problems that caused me to close up so much I rarely spoke to anyone.

11th - I broke out of my shyness a little and made friends at a new Christian church. Then I met my 1st boyfriend, had 1st kiss, and wanted to become  a jew and move to Chicago for him. Lol, this makes me laugh now. I continued to rock at archery.

12th - I changed schools to graduate high school with my church friends. Went to college part time after high school. After years of travel and tournaments, I decided to leave archery for a few years to enjoy being young.

  • Kindergarten
I remember sitting in line in the gymnasium for my first day of "big kid school". I was arguing with a boy in my class over whose folder was prettiest. He would not agree with me that my folder, in fact, was prettier. I bloodied his nose.

    First Grade
My first grade teacher used to keep scrap pieces of paper for us to doodle on made from leftover fliers/announcements/etc. This was so we didn't waste notebook paper scribbling and drawing. Whenever anyone finished their classwork, she allowed us to doodle on these pieces of scrap paper. I would always make a "book" with words and drawings, and when I was finished, I would take it to her to staple together. One day when I write my first novel, I'm going to dedicate it to her and my Kindergarten teacher, who were very encouraging of my writing.

    Second Grade
I remember this as being the first time I felt "weird" after not having seen everyone all summer long, then being out at break time and seeing my classmates. This was also the year we were paired up to learn line dancing in P.E.

    Third Grade
The year I truly felt like a big kid. When I saw that I would be taking ENGLISH, and HISTORY.... WHOA! During the school year, each class put on a little play for the other four classes. Our play was "Rhyming Liz to the Rescue". I played the part of Amanda, the class bully, who, in the end, became a "good guy".

    Fourth Grade
At first I was afraid I wouldn't like my teacher, because she was the one who sent me to the principal's office a couple of years back when I told a classmate of mine that I hoped she went to hell (I was ballsy, dude). Turns out, she was actually pretty nice. This was the year I started writing more competitively, and won a contest for Mother's Day on a paper I wrote about why I loved my mom. This was also the first year I participated in the Science Fair with a project on electricity!

    Fifth Grade
I hated the woman who was my fifth grade teacher. ABSOLUTELY HATED HER. She was a very mean old woman. I remember she kept a paddle in her broom closet and would give "birthday spankings" on anyone's birthday. She paddled my rearend WAY too hard, and I about cried. I also remember her embarassing me during a reading of "The House of Dies Drear". BITCH.

I remember Camp Cosby this year though and I absolutely LOVED it. I got to go canoeing and kayaking for the first time. GO ARAPAHOE! (The cabins we stayed in were named after indian tribes). We won the golden dustpan award for cleanest cabin.

    Sixth Grade
This grade wasn't much better. Though, I remember there was a really cute boy who transferred, but he was dating one of my best friends. They broke up, then he dated me. After that, who cares, lol. I remember we had a shoe box in the class room where we were allowed to write notes to other classmates and stick them in the box. At the end of the day, someone would be designated the "mail man" and would deliver the notes to whoever they went to.

I also remember graduating to Pacabel's Canon in D in the gymnasium wearing a Tommy Hilfiger dress.

    Seventh Grade
WORST YEAR OF MY LIFE. I try not to remember it.

    Eighth Grade
I transferred away from all of my friends and started a new school, where I got my first REAL boyfriend. I was head over heels for the guy. I didn't really make a lot of long-lasting friends, but being the new girl, there were people who were more than happy to reach out to me. I remember wearing jeans with a jean jacket. OMG. FAIL.

    Ninth Grade
The last year I wore bangs. For some reason, I HATED my forehead showing. I also started wearing makeup regularly, and at one point, wore a LITTLE too much of it. This was when our grade really began to stand out as the "class that can't do anything right". Our float sucked. Our skits sucked. We just SUCKED. I joined the track team and JV basketball, and ended up doing both only for one year.

    Tenth Grade
The first time I dyed my hair (from blonde to brunette) and it's been an unhealthy and expensive habit ever since. Our float was actually pretty good, but our skit still sucked. I dated a 7th grader for about 2 weeks (he was old enough to be 8th grade, but still awkward as heck in my book). The drumline started that year, and I was one of the only 2 girls on it.

    Eleventh Grade
Powder puff football CHAMPIONS. Our floats were crap. Our skit was crap. But dammit if we couldn't beat some ass playing football! Our girls were BEAST! I got into a car wreck with one of the boys in my class that left his car totalled, but everyone was fine.

    Twelfth Grade
Powder puff football champs AGAIN! Our float won! Our skit SHOULD have won, but we came in second. It took us four years but we finally managed to get our crap together. We went on a senior trip to Washington, D.C., and I've been dying to go back. Senior boys were mostly assholes.
