How to save money on MY BIG DAY

I just read this on DIY bride and wanted to share it with you ladies. My reponse is..WTF.

Dear DIY Bride: My fiance and I are on a tight budget for our May 2011 wedding. We are considering approaching a local restaurant, DJ, and photographer to see if they’ll consider swap their services for advertising at our wedding. Is there a best way to do this? What advertising is best (mention in our programs, signs displayed on tables)?  [Original question edited for clarity.]

Fundraisers and sporting events, ok. Wedding?? Uhh, I don't think so.

I've been following this girl on Twitter for a while:

She seems to be doing it a classy-ish way...well as classy as you can be when you're advertising at your wedding.  It's not my thing but if it works for you then meh...could be hella tacky tho.

I have seen the photog give a discount before but never a full on pakage... I can see where maybe they would donate some of their labor, I would love to meet the photog that donates the whole package. It is havoc on the photog to spend the entire day never stopping and always thinking and scouting. Then to edit the photos and the printing is just more madness.

    I think that's kinda tacky.

If you can't afford a lavish affair, don't have one.

Have the wedding you can afford. Or save up for it.

Since I'm into NASCAR, I keep getting this image of my beautiful white dress covered in sponsor patches...ewwww, get that thought out of my head.

If a vendor gave me some crazy out of this world discount and they asked me to advertise at the wedding, I would be ok with them throwing some business cards on tables or doing a mention on the back of the programs, as long as it didn't go overboard.  But to go to vendors and ask them to do everything for free in return for advertising?  If she can get it done, more power to her, but I can just see her wedding being one big billboard.

    Haha!!

Ugh, I went to a wedding where there was a beautiful cake, and then a big sign with the bakery name sticking out. It just ruined it. It feels like you are at a bridal expo.

katanne, every time I see the pics in your signature of you and DH, it makes me smile, its like those moments where if someone smiles at you and you unconsciously smile too, that's what it feels like.  Perhaps because you look so happy in them.  :)

Sorry to be off topic, my two cents is its tacky if it becomes one big billboard, but if she can pull it off and then good for her.  She can then have a wedding that she wouldn't usually be able to afford.

I imagine that the table numbers say "sponsored by X" and have a picture of the couple in front of the location. That, and now Angie's NASCAR dress.

AMEN!!!  Go the Dave Ramsey way!!  Have a green wedding...AKA...a wedding you can pay cash for and afford.  A sponsered wedding just sounds tacky in all aspects of the word.  Getting freebies is one thing...actually marketing for the company is a whole new animal.  Who knows though...it might end up looking like less of a train wreck than we are imagining **shrug**

I'm so late to this but yuck. I agree with everyone else but I probably think it's way more tacky than is acceptable. Whoever said it would be like a bridal expo could not be more correct!

People come up some ridiculous ideas sometimes.
