High School Reunion. Yay or Nay?

My 10-year HS reunion is this Saturday back in MD. I wasn't sure about going, but I had enough airline miles for a free ticket and the reunion tickets are only $50/person. I decided to cash in on the free ticket and make a long weekend out of it. I'll be able to see my brother, his GF and their new house and pets! I'll also get to do some wedding related stuff with my mom which is exciting.

Now that I've got everything booked though, i'm debating about the reunion. Do I really want to spend $50 on a night with people I haven't seen in 10 years? I don't keep in touch with anyone from HS really, not even through FB. I can't decide if it will be fun to catch up with everyone and hear how their lives are going OR if I will feel like an outsider being one of the few people who don't still live in southern MD.

Did you go to your HS reunion? Did you enjoy it? Should I go? Tell me what you think!

Re: High School Reunion. Yay or Nay?

  • I say go. I've only been out of HS for 5 years and don't talk to too many people from high school, but I think it would be a great experience. I'm trying to talk BF into going to his as well. You may not talk to people, but it may be a chance to talk to someone you never really got to know. It sounds like fun to me, plus I'm a nosy little you-know-what, so I love seeing how people have changed and what they have done with their lives.

  • I voted why not go even if you stay an hour.  I have never gone to any reunions, I had a huge graduating class and I really only keep in touch with or see 2 or 3 people I graduated with.   Some people it would be nice to see, but for the most part I didn't feel like making small talk with people I hadn't seen in ten years.

It sounds like there are lots of good reasons to head out to MD anyway, so I would go and make a long weekend out of it.

I missed my 15 year HS reunion, we didn't have a 5 or a 10. It's not something that plagues me, but I do really wish I'd been able to go. You never know who you might run into, and it might be fun to reminisce about old times and share your engagement news with old friends. I say go, and leave after an hour if it sucks! Mobile is annoying with its deletion of punctuation!

    Still here and still fabulous!

  • I voted go and leave after an hour if it sucks. I went to mine and it was FAB! I basically hang out with everyone I care about from high school on a regular basis anyway, so it wasn't so much about catching up with people. That's so easy to do now with FB (or as I like to call it, spying on those skinny H.S. b!tches, without making awkward small talk). But I went because my good friend was the president of our class and organized it. It was at a brewery. SOLD! And we had an awesome after party at a great bar. In truth it was really fun to catch up with some of those people. I still don't talk to them on a regular basis, but it was nice to get dressed up, drink beer, and party.

I voted yes because I will also be in MD on Saturday Smile

If you get bored and leave, you can be my wedding date.  I'll be there alone since H is out of town.

  • I think it depends on your high school experience. Mine wasn't terrible, but I wasn't friends with the people who went to my school. Most of my friends were at a neighboring school (I lived on the line between the two districts), so I really didn't see a point of going to mine, and I didn't. I dont' regret it. But if you had a good social circle there and would like to reconnect, then it can be a great idea.

    It's really up to you.

  • I voted go and leave if you get bored. Our reunions start at 5 years. My friends and I didn't go since one of our friends got married that day.

I live in such a small area so you pretty much see everyone we went to high school with during the summer out at the bars so I probably wont even go to our ten year either.

  • I'm thinking I should just get a ticket. They had to sell at least 75 tickets to book the event, so I know it won't be completely dead. I don't know who all is going...but I have a feeling a lot of the people I was close with won't be there. You never know though. I just feel like if I make it all the way to MD, it would be silly to skip the reunion. Guess i've made my decision. Thanks ladies!

Now what to wear??? The invite says "Beach Formal". What the heck is that? Like a maxi dress or something? Maybe I'll go shopping when I get to MD tomorrow.

LaSak - Where in MD??? I'll be in southern Maryland...close to Waldorf. Perhaps a G2G if we can swing it?
  • I'll be in western MD, just south of Gettysburg, PA.  The wedding starts at 5...I'm not sure what your schedule looks like for that day.  Let me know!

Looks like we're about 2.5 hours apart. My reunion doesn't start until 7pm, so guessing i'm not going to make the wedding. Bummer!<img src="http://cdn.cl9.vanillaforums.com/downloaded/ver1.0/content/scripts/tinymce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-frown.gif" border="0" alt="Frown" title="Frown" />
  • Sounds like you've already decided to go, and I voted that you should go and just leave if it is a wash. I skipped my 5 year reunion. I just didn't feel like 5 years was really a big deal. Nothing had really changed in my life - I had just graduated from college, and hadn't started my job yet. I also didn't really feel like "catching up" with the folks from my high school graduating class. I guess reunions just aren't that important to me, but if it were my 10 year, I might want to head back.

As for beach formal? Hmm... I guess sheath dresses, strapless, flowing and elegant? Shorter even? Low heels? Maybe they don't want people wearing prom dresses (big poofy dresses)... That's my best guess.

  • I say nay, unless you have people you really want to see again there isn't a draw to go.  I left high school behind without looking back.
  • We didn't have a 5 year reunion because our organizers are...crackheads.  And well, idiots.

I think we get a 10 year reunion, but I'm not going.

If I went to a smaller school, I would go.  But there were almost 550 kids in my graduating class - and frankly, I only care about 20 or so of them.

That sounds harsh, haha. but it's true.

Thumbs down, you would have been a fun date!  I hope you have fun at the reunion and it's worth the trip!

ETA: To answer your original question, I did not go to my 5 year reunion because really, what has anyone done in 5 years except finish college?  I'll probably go to my 10 year reunion so I can show off my PhD because I was the quiet nerd with no friends in high school.

I went to Mount St. Mary's in Emmitsburg, MD for undergrad and got married there.  Our reception was at Ski Liberty...are you familiar with that area?  I'm sure it will be a blast.  The reception is at one of the hotels in Gettysburg.

<div>YES- such a small world!  My first job fresh out of college was at a company in Taneytown.  And Ski Liberty was one of the venues I looked at- we ended up choosing The Links at Gettysburg for our wedding.  The funny thing is I thought the background of your photo looked familar, but I just chalked it up to deja vu.    </div>

What time of year is your wedding?  I was at a spring wedding last year at the Links and it was GORGEOUS!  It is so beautiful in there.

<div>December.  It is defiintely beautiful when it's green, but I love the way it looks during the winter during the snow too.  Not to mention I'm a total perfectionist/ Type A, and my coordinator there is the same way.  Match made in heaven for sure.</div>

  • I just missed my 10 year.... and I am totally ok with it... it was all the way up in Canada and I could not find a ticket for less then $670 (not cheap by the way BFF who found that "great deal"). Plus all the people that went minus 2 of my GFs that I am still in touch with were people I didnt care too much for then, and who all still lived in the area. Because my HS had an international hockey academy attached too it most of my friends were from here, and since moving back I have seen almost all of them.. and none of them went.. so for me it just wasnt worth spending all that money. I would rather just meet upwith my 2 best GF's for a ladies weekend without all the other people!
  • Our 10 year is also coming up in November, and I've decided not to go. Ours is about $100, and honestly, if I wanted to see or keep in touch with people, I would do so on FB. Not to mention, a couple of them live not to far from me, in fact, three of them moved into my old building the week I moved out. Do I see them or hang out with them? No. So why pay $100 to see them when I can walk 4 blocks for free.

I bet that will be beautiful in December.  The inside has such a warm, cozy feel.  The reception I'm heading to this weekend is at the Wyndham.  With all of my college friends that got married at Mount St. Mary's, I've never been to a reception at the Wyndham before.

<div>That's what I'm hoping- and lots of candles to expand on the warm, cozy feel.  The Wyndham is a beautiful hotel, never been to a wedding there, but they did a great job with a bridal show I attended.  It is also only a couple of years old, and people assume it's really expensive (when it is actually really affordable), so I think that steers people away from it which is a shame.  I'm sure you will have a ton of fun!</div><div>
