Jeana!!!

So I was listening to the radio this morning on the ride in to work and the host was talking to some gentlemen from Louisiana about the oil spill.  Any who, after the interview she said "And that was so-and-so President of the Parish of such-and-such." 

This leads me to some questions- what is a Parish?  Is it like a County? Is it like an amalgamation of Counties or Towns? Is it the same thing as here, which is a small area that is served by one particular Church?  And why does it have a President? 

Help me rack my Canadian brain around this.  I am ever so confused!

Haha... I had those exact questions when I moved down here Paige!  And since I'm new, I'll let Jeana answer.   In the Midwest - where I'm from - we have counties and mayors but down here they call them parishes.  So I get the feeling it's like a county.  Jeana will know though!

That's what I figured, Jeter! It sounded like it was a county and he was like the mayor. But I could be wrong.  Jeana will set us straight! lol

A Parish is the same thing as a county, LA is actually the only state that calls them that. Jeana will have a better answer I'm sure, but that is my understanding.

Jeter - I've always wanted to go visit the South...it seems like a interesting place to me! I'm so curious about other places.  I've been all along the East Coast (we used to drive from Nova Scotia to Florida every year til I was about 12) but never anywhere else...I'm coming to explore sometime soon!! haha

Hetshup - I thought it was the same thing.  I know Jeana will have a more detailed answer but atleast now I know I'm not crazy for assuming they're the same thing lol

LOL, you guys are HILARIOUS.

I don't have a better answer. They're counties. It's something to do with Louisiana history and Catholics. It a very heavily Catholic area, and I'm sure it was even moreso back in the day. This is the ONLY state that calls counties "parishes."

You wouldn't believe the crazy amount of French and Spanish influence still apparent here.

Paige - you totally need to come down and explore this area!  I've been all over the east part of the US but nothing compares to southern Louisiana.... I am definitely going through culture shock down here.

Come visit San Antonio too! I can show you the alamo, and SA is on the Edwards aquifer, which is the largest karst aquifer in the country, so we can go caving. And best of all?!? Margaritas. Like you've never had before.

Maybe I should do a hardcore road trip...haha  I think it would take me 2 -3 days to drive that far!

Or, you guys should come closer...like to Mass b/c I'm going there in September. lol

FI's family is from Shreveport, LA (don't worry, I learned very quickly how to say it properly without much of a V sound) and we visit every New Years.....talk about culture shock coming from Chicago!  The biggest disappointment I ever had was when I found out that Bon Temps (the town from True Blood) doesn't exist! :-)

Aperitisa - I found out Bon Temps isn't real either (last year) and it made me very sad.  I lurves me some True Blood! lol

Loosianna- as my father would pronounce it is a very pretty place. I was watching steel magnolias the other day which was filmed in my fathers home town of Natchitoches, the movie is even more sad since he died

Yes, just a bit. I'll forgive you though.

To be honest, I always thought he was hot in a snarky, bad boy sort of way, but he only made it up to the top of my list after True Blood Epi 2x9 (if you're a TB fan, you know what I'm talking about). That whole Sookie-Erik fantasy sequence came on and about 10 seconds later, I hear ricky go, "Um, Ocean, do you want to pick your jaw up off the floor now or later?" lol

Haha! I know exactly what you're talking about!! My (ex) roommate and I watched it.  She giggled the whole way thru and I was like speechless...10 seconds later she was like "Uh, are you going to make it...?" Apparently my mouth was open and I was just staring like "ZOMG!" lol

paige, I'm just praying that those fantasy sequences were, like, previews for Season 4, if they're following the plotline presented in the books.

Oceana - I have to be honest ...I've never read anything past like half way thru book 2! *eeep!*  I'm a horrible fan! lol  But I would love my life if those were previews for season 4!
