Why should we go to: NYC OR Eastern Canada?

OK ladies. BF and I are contemplating going to NYC in April OR Eastern Canada in June. Ideally, we'd go to the place we don't go in the spring, in the fall, but it may not happen. I know you're all full of opinions (and biases), so try to persuade me one way or the other. I am currently leaning to one side, but I could be swayed (I already have been at least once on this issue).

What each trip might look like (very generally, haven't really started planning):

NYC - late April
- fly out of Buffalo to NYC on a Thursday, come home on a Sunday or Monday; BF would have to take time off work, I wouldn't
- stay in a hotel, eat almost every meal out, get around via our legs and public transit
- hit all the key touristy points in NYC that we can in a short period of time
- I've been to NYC before, but not for a few years, and it was with school; BF has never been

Eastern Canada - June
- road trip through Quebec to the Maritime provinces from Ontario (trip would be a week to two weeks); we'd both have to take time off work
- camp in provincial parks primarily, staying in hotels occasionally
- hit as many locations as we can, by driving from place to place
- neither of us have ever been to Quebec or the Maritimes

I say Eastern Canada.  I looove camping so that is an auto-win for me.  Andplusalso neither of you have been, so it would be a nice sweet thing to discover new things together.  A lot more alone time there too instead of being constantly surrounded by people as you would in NYC.

I vote Canada because it's a longer trip.  I also vote it because I would do NYC totally differently.  I wouldn't stay in the city (I'd stay in Jersey City or Hoboken and take the PATH in...) and I would definitely not eat out every meal :)

    Plus, I like road trips!

    These are totally different trips.

What are you looking for in your trip?

I'm playing the NYC card, only because it's a dream of mine to go there someday so if I had the chance EVER I would jump on it like a trampoline!!!  Keep us posted...can't wait to hear about it either way, they both sound like AWESOME trips...

<div>Yes they are! That's the problem. We're just looking to get away, and see something new and different (and I know I've been to NYC before, but I'll be doing it a lot differently than I did last time). BF is a photographer, and they both offer a lot of potential in that respect (but again, totally different). </div><div>
</div><div>See, I have this 3 mile long list in my head of places I want to see in the world. All different kinds of trips, but all with the intention of seeing as much of where I am as possible (read: sitting on a resort for a week is not my idea of a worth-while vacation). BF is completely on board with this idea, and so we're trying to start checking places off the list. </div><div>
</div><div>So, I didn't really answer your question. I'll share my current preference, and reasons why later on (and then also reasons holding me back from that choice), once I've got other opinions. </div>

NYC gets my vote. But I'm not an outdoors-y person.

Well, I lived in NYC for six years, and I can tell you a little about what that's like, if that helps! I know you were there for school, but like you said, it would be different.

-It's an exciting and stunning city.
    -It's fast-paced, and you'll walk a lot.
-New Yorkers are kind people, but not always outwardly polite.
-If you get off the beaten path (away from touristy areas), you'll likely have a celebrity sighting or two.
-If you're doing the touristy stuff (Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty, Times Square), it'll be crowded and you'll wait in long lines. (Not that it's not worth it!)
-If you're looking for great art, great performing arts, great food, and great nightlife, NYC wins. BTW, pick up a Village Voice newspaper (free) and/or a Time Out New York magazine for ideas on what to do.
-If you go, go to a bookstore and get a "Not For Tourists" guidebook. If you're a foodie like me, grab a Zagat guide or look for recent Zagat stickers in restaurant windows. Yelp works well, too.
-Lots of museums are closed on Mondays or Tuesdays. Check schedules. Also, lots of museums have suggested donations or even free admission days, so you don't always have to pay full price. The MET is classic, but I also recommend MOMA and the Brooklyn Museum if you haven't been.
-If you want a more relaxing vacation, do the road trip through Canada. :)

    HTH!

My ears perked up at Eastern Canada...muahahahahaha!!

I love.love.love NYC BUT the difference between NYC and Eastern Canada is HUGE.  Let me list some benefits of Eastern Canada (and particularly NB,PEI,NS...cause we know I'm biased ;) ):

    - Longer vacay

    - BEAUTIFUL scenery (not saying NYC doesn't have it, but ours is more natural where theirs is man made).  Did you know Cape Breton has been voted one of the most beautiful places on Earth?  True story.

    - I'm not a camping kind of girl but if you love it then we have TONS of beautiful grounds.

    - History.  Pick what you want from Old Quebec City to Green Gables on PEI to Ft. Louisburg in Cape Breton and Citadel Hill in Halifax, NS.

    - Seafood.  Delicious.  'Nuff said.

    - TOOOOBING! Seriously, NS,NB, PEI all have some AMAZING rivers to go for a lazy tube ride with a few beer.  One of my fav. summer activities.

    - Fishing/hiking/golf courses (up the wazooo)/ATVing/Kayaking (in the OCEAN! SO COOL)/ National Parks  (Kejimkujik is in NS and it's HUGE and beautiful)

    - Bay of Fundy has the worlds highest tides.  NS or NB.  Great adventures - white water rafting/boat tours/swimming

    - Festivals! We've got tons in the summer from lobsters to music.

    - Me.  That's right.  I'm here.  I'm important.  And I'd even take you out for drinks and a taste of DT Halifax nightlife if you're nice to me;)

Anywho here are tourism sites for NS, NB and PEI.  HTH

I think it depends on the kind of person you are and which one you'll enjoy the most at this moment. For me, I'd choose NYC because I'll always want to go to the Maritimes and I don't know if the same would be true for NYC

Also, the Canadian dollar is rocking right now, so it is perfect to go to the USA.

I'm currently leaning toward the road trip out East. I don't really know why, I just think it sounds more fun and probably relaxing at this point. Also, I've been to NYC before, although I absolutely want to go back. My grandparents were recently out East, and looking at their pictures is what sparked this idea. Also, I have a dear friend out there who I can't wait to see (I mean, she will be coming back to Ontario to visit, but I do want to visit her out there as well)! However, I'm not sure if I can get the time off work to do the trip we want to. If we go to New York, I wouldn't need to take time off, and it is the trip we were planning originally.

I know either way we'll have fun, and either way we'll go both places eventually.

    Beads, totally go out East.

If you've never been to Quebec, you will LOVE it. Do either of you know some French? Some of the more rural areas are pickier about having people actually speak French there, as a warning (in my experience at least. "En trio" means as a combo at McDonald's!) It is just bursting with history, especially if you go to Quebec City and hit up the Old City. It's beautiful, very European. And then the Maritimes are breathtaking in their natural simplicity. The beaches, the trails, etc. It's a nice drive too, I've done it twice before. If you need any help with places to stay (when you aren't camping. If you do go) in PEI, Quebec City, Montreal, NB or PEI, just let me know!

If i were in your shoes, I would say NYC. That way you have more days off work later on in the year if you want to take a more local, less expensive weekend trip.

I love NYC, but April is such a hit-or-miss time of year weather-wise - could be snowing and very cold or really wet and rainy.  I'd recommend Eastern Canada, because if you DO get the chance to go to NYC in the fall, it's beautiful!  Leaves falling in Central Park - even late fall, when you can go ice skating in Rockefeller Center.  Amazing!  And Eastern Canada will be a little more relaxing and less expensive.
