Would it be tacky...

...to get married at a campground?

Or rather, to have the reception at a campground?  FI and I have been trying to figure out what our budget needs to be, and for me, that means getting a rough idea of venue costs before we pick and making sure that we know what kind of money we need to save.  And so we thought about places we've been together, and our first vacation was to Chincoteague Island, where we camped here: http://www.chincoteague.com/maddox/

So, darling knotties, is it tacky to have the reception at a campground?  Should I keep looking?

(I also called an adorable B&B, and the woman was super nice.  She can't take us, but she went to another wedding in Annapolis, and she's going to call and figure out where it was, and then let me know.  She said it was gorgeous and on the beach, and still close enough to DC to accommodate our international guests)

I don't think it's tacky. I would be concerned about weather though...will you be renting a tent and figuring that into your budget?

Annapolis is very nice! It is a close drive from DC too. I don't know any wedding venues off the top of my head, but I think it would be a great town to get married in!!!

No. My good friends got married at Red Rock out here last year. It was beautiful.
    I'm not good at feelings.

The campground costs $100 to rent the pavilion that's already there.  I totally would love to have it at the B&B, but they can only take 50, and that's not even my entire family :(

Annapolis is probably the best of both worlds.  It'll be interesting to see what the innkeeper lets me know.  We're going to go stay there, whether we get married there or not.  She treated me like her own daughter on the phone, and that was special for me...

I wouldn't think it was tacky as long as the wedding matched the atmosphere, I'm not saying serve hot dogs and smores.  But an outdoorsy wedding that reflects nature would be awesome.  Like the allusive said perhaps a tent and some strategic lighting would be on point.

I don't think it's tacky but is this campground appropriate to hold a large event? Unless you're having a small one then disregard.. but be sure to think about the number of toilets needed, etc...

My sister did.  It was good for an extremely low budget wedding (I think she did a wedding for 100 people for about $1,500)  It was definitely a very casual affair though, they served homemade BBQ, guests wore jeans, the tables were just the regular picnic tables that come at a campground and had potted flowers for centerpieces.  They just had several ice chests for drinks and a keg with red solo cups.  It wasn't exactly an elegant affair, but I don't think that's solely because it was at a campground, it was more because that's their style.  If they did things a little differently (and spent a little more money), it could have been just as beautiful as any other wedding because the backdrop of the mountain was stunning.

I think as of right now (and this may totally change once we go visit and talk to them more) my main concern is the rest of the people there.  It's a huge campground, so I would just be worried that there will be a bunch of people who come in uninvited.

Jemmini, that sounds like about what we're aiming for.  Super affordable.

Audgie and Jemmini, how did they handle other guests of the campground that weren't part of the wedding?

I will be eternally jealous if you have miniature golf at your wedding and I'm not invited.

Seriously.  That sounds like awesome reception fun.

I don't think it's tacky at all! thejinx makes a good point though--just make sure there are adequate facilities for everyone's comfort.

The campsite they got married at was actually a group site on a completely separate loop of it's own, so it was pretty private.

    Not tacky.

But Peekaboo, does this thread (click) help you at all? There isn't too much in there, but it sounds like a similar idea.

We've thought of that.  Mainly the one in Annapolis, as soon as I figure out what it is.  I'll keep you guys posted.

And Wrkn, I think we might have to have mini-golf at the reception no matter where we are.  I didn't even think of it, but that's BRILLIANT.  And yes, you can come.

Edit: Peekaboo FAIL.  I totally thought it was marley, not wrkn.  My b.

    I want to come, too!

I'm a total hippie, so drinking in the woods all day sounds like an amazing party.

FI just vetoed the campground.  Back to the drawing board.  But he's super excited about mini golf.

Andplusalso, I just got told that he wants to shoot for a $15000 wedding, and so when we can project that we will have $15000 to pay for everything (read: after he has a job, and I'm getting a stipend), we'll set a date.  SH!T JUST GOT RLLLLLL
