AW: I haz new furbaby

So, I had a great weekend! BF and I celebrated our 2 year anniversary and the Cougars won and Case Keenum is now the most successsful college quarterback in history. 

Now, onto my new puppy. I started looking for a dog in September, but I couldn't do the expenses with a shelter adoption and start up costs. I was just going to wait it out and not succumb to my puppy fever when I stumbled across a craigslist add for a 5 yr old beagle/terrier mix. I emailed the poster out of curiosity, not fully willing to commit. We met, I fell in love, and two weeks later, I have a new dog!

She was really tired of me taking pictures... 

So there's Molly!! She's really sweet and loves to snuggle. She has an elongated soft pallete, so it hurts for her to bark. She only barks at strangers knocking on the door, or so I've heard.

Melekath- I named her after Molly Weasley, from Harry Potter of course.

She's very cute. I had a golden named Molly, so I have a soft spot for that name too

I know that adoption fees and everything can be really expensive, but so is owning a dog long-term. I hope you've done research into how much it costs per month in food, toys, treats, and other expenses (e.g., unexpected trips to the vet) to keep your dog healthy and happy, and are prepared for that financial commitment.

She is absolutely adorable, but do you know what it costs to keep a dog? Our dog's monthly budget is:
Flea prevention: 12
Heartworm prevention: 6
Food: 25
Treats/toys/misc.: 10

Anything we use over this comes out of my own "fun" budget (for example, if I'm out of town for work and she goes to daycare for the day that comes out of my fun/clothing budget).

Annual vet appointment: 120ish
Minor medical problem vet appointments each year so far: 100

So approximiate annual expenses for just the basics: $856, assuming she doesn't get hurt or sick. (She does eat fancy food but it's worth it.)

Planning on vacation? Add $150-250 to your trip to cover your pup's kennel costs.

Bottom line: No dog is "free".

However...

Is it a matter of you couldn't <em>afford</em> shelter/adoption fees, or you just didn't <em>want</em> to have to pay them?

If it is that you couldn't afford shelter/adoption fees, then you really shouldn't be having a dog, period. The adoption fee for our furmonster was $100 - we easily spend over that every year on food, vet visits, medications, toys, etc. No pet is ever free. Period. Approaching this as "zomg I got a cute little pup for free on CL and everything is going to be puppies and rainbows" is, well, niave.

If you just didn't want to pay adoption fees...well, call me b*tchy, but that's just plain sh*tty. Seriously. Adoption fees are in place to ensure that animals being rescued and cared for by shelters have food and shelter, as well as any medical care or training they may need. It's seriously the least you can do, considered they fed and cared for your precious little Fido until you picked him out.

But you're totally right. I'd be afraid to get a pet that hadn't had reputable vet care before I got it. I wouldn't trust a random CL stranger not to lie about the condition of their pet. Have you seen the CL Killer on Lifetime Movie Network? Well, I've had a broken foot for a few months. So I maybe have. CL people lie. Bottom line.
