I want to change the locks on the new house...

And Andrew and his parents think it's unncessary and kinda silly.

I definitely don't think that it is unnecessary. It's not horribly difficult and if it gives you peace of mind it is completely worth it.

Absolutely do it! You have no idea who has keys to the house!!!!!!!

You can take the locks to a hardware store and have them re-keyed for like $5 a pop, just need someone to stay there for a hour or so while you do it, it only take a few minutes per lock.  Call ahead and see when is a good time to take them in so you don't have to wait long.  Then new keys are only a dollar something...if it gives you peace to sleep at night it's a worth while investment!

I don't think it's silly at all. I can remember my parents changing locks on houses after we moved. Whatever makes you feel safe and sound IMO.

We did it, but a lot of it had to do with the fact that the people who lived in the house before us stole a bunch of stuff from the house as they left and also seemed like stand-up people, as they scrawled 'F*CK YOU' in the concrete where a welcome mat should be on our front porch.

I'd do it regardless. It's super easy and not expensive.

I would do it too, especially for peace of mind

We've moved a LOT and always done it.  It's like the first thing that happens around here.  You never know who has keys to the house.  If they really think it's unnecessary, tell them you won't be able to sleep comfortably unless the locks are changed.  I know I wouldn't...

I agree with everyone else.  Change the locks. It's worth it.

It's inexpensive and easy to do - so I'd say go for it. I changed mine when I moved in, but I purchased a HUD, so realtors everywhere have keys to those...kind of necessary.

Absolutely do it. If you know anyone moving, just switch locks with them.

Absolutely change them. Unless it's a decorative set that you really like, in which case I agree with dwest and just get them re-set.

Do it!  It is easy and cheap.  Plus wasn't this house a short sale?  If so I would def do it then.

Changing the locks was one of the first things we did when we moved into our house last October. Definitely do it. You never know who has a copy of the original lock's key.

I'm in the minority here. I wouldn't worry. When we bought our house we didn't change the locks. I didn't think it was a big deal at all and we never even threw out the idea. Bf's mom is a cop and if anyone was going to suggest it, it would be her. We feel perfectly safe in this house. Had we bought under different circumstances, maybe I would have considered it, but whatever you feel comfortable you should do.

Do it! My house had been completely remodeled and sitting empty for awhile when I bought it. When I was moving in, I found a key in the front yard that had been dropped by somebody. I tried it in my lock just to see, and it opened my door. I guess the owners had handed out keys to all of the contractors who worked on the house. I called and had the locks changed that day.

We bought and installed new locks the day we closed. We have no idea who had keys before, and we didn't want to risk it. Plus, we were replacing all the other knobs anyway, so this way it all matched.

I agree that it isn't that expensive for the peace of mind.

We have an apartment, so we didn't change it until about a year in when the darned lock broke! So now we do have a new one.
