Caterer - Help me Choose!

We've gotten quotes from two caterers. Tell me what you think. Keep in mind that we are doing a country style wedding on my parents farm, so not uber fancy.

Option 1: Rotisserie style beef roast, pork loin, chicken piceces or turkey (we choose 2), 2 salads, 1 hot veg, 1 potato dish, rolls. My parents have been to events with this caterer and approve of their food. Friends are also using this caterer for their wedding. Seem really versatile to work with.

Option 2: BBQ style pig roast, chicken or beef (we choose 2), 3 salads, 1 potato dish, rolls. A family friend's daughter used them and recommends them.  Have preset list of dishes that they do.

In terms of price, Option 1 is $10 per plate cheaper including service.

The first one sounds more plentiful and yummier, but that's not much to go off of, I guess.  Do you have any pictures of spreads they've done for events/weddings?

And you GOTTA taste it first!  Laughing

If the food is good with both places, I'd go with the first one and save a few bucks!

The reason I picked BBQ style is because of the style of your wedding. Because you are having your wedding on a farm (that's my dream wedding!! lol), I think it's fitting to have that simple, almost country option.

But because both seem to be good options, either one would be great. I'm sure you'll make the right choice. GL!

I have pictures for Option 2 but none for Option 1. Mind you I can simply ask my mom about that because they went to an anniversary party that used them and she can give me an idea of their presentation style.

Both my parents have had the food from Option 1 and liked it. My dad is the first one to complain about food.

I think I've actually been to a birthday party that used Option 1. I'm sure we can choose, but they had the rotisserie at the event, so very similar to the bbq.

The part I'm most concerned about with Option 2 is that they do economies of scale pricing. I know we are inviting 200 ish people to the wedding, but there are a lot of OOT guests, particularly in the US and our numbers are really in flux. Option 1 is this is the cost per head and let us know a month ahead and a week ahead for numbers. Option 2 is this is our quote but the fewer people you have the higher the cost per person goes due to the costs of transporting the bbqs, etc.

FI and I both like option 2 better.  We go to his fraternity's alumni event every year and they do a pig roast.  It's phenomenal.  But, if the pricing for option 1 works better for your situation, then you should do that :)

I like the first option sounds tastier, and also a bit cleaner.  Somehow BBQ sauce and semi fancy clothes don't mix.

I went to a wedding once with a pig roast.  I wasn't a big fan.  I'm all for eating whatever once it's carved and on a plate if it's tasty, but a spit with an animal rotating on it doesn't scream "wedding" to me.

ETA:  Sorry, I just read a super old post where you were saying this was your FI's vision for the wedding.  I'm all for incorporating the guys' ideas as much as possible, so if that's what you'd both like to do, then go for that one!

I would do the first option since you're getting the same amount of food (it nearly tricked me there with the 3 side options with Option 2, and 2 side options with 1 veg in Option 1) and I think saving the money is worth it. Especially since you know the first one will be good, and it's cheaper, and both foods sound similar enough that I think the cost difference is worth it. Plus I prefer rotisserie. :)

I vote for #1. I love rotisserie and it sounds like they have a lot of food as well as being more affordable!

I vote number 1 before the price even came into the picture. It sounds yummier. Plus, $10 for 200 people is $2000 saved or toward something else.

I love BBQ like the dickens, but I picked option one. It seems to still fit in well with the overall feel of the wedding, it's been tasted and approved by people you know and trust, and like motoLyn said, BBQ sauce is lethal at any event other than an actual barbecue. It's a wonderful, delicious mess, but at the end of the day, still just a mess.

    Thanks ladies!

We had been leaning towards option 1 as well, but I wanted to run it by people. Also option 1 is completely booked for Saturday weddings in 2011 and already has 4 for 2012, so there is definitely a demand for them.

I like the sound of the first one better because it offers a hot veg, although BBQ is delicious. Since it's going to be a fairly significant savings, I say #1 (even though it's rotisserie).

I'd pick #1. $10 cheaper is quite a bit! Plus, personally, it sounds way yummier.

    Agreed!

And...I don't know if you have any vegetarians, but just a thought...a pig roast might not be the most appealing for them. It's your wedding, and I personally wouldn't say a word to you about it if I were a guest, but honestly, a big cooked pig would make me a little uncomfortable. Also, you might want to consider a bean or quinoa type salad so the vegetarians can get some protein too.

But if you don't have any veggies, then no worries! :)

    Thanks Desert

That was one of my plans to have a vegetarian meal style salad of some sort.

Also, my cousin and his wife had a pig roast for their wedding. I admit I was really caught offguard when they did it. I'm also very much that if one of my cousins had it then I want to be different. I don't mind having roast pork, just not in the shape of the pig still.

Cate - No worries, the pig roast pictures we've seen have made me kind of reconsider the image of that.
