What are you reading right now?

Anything good?! Any awesome suggestions?! I'm not finding any time to browse covers not that all the Border's are closed. Yes I could go to Barnes and Noble, but with all the dark wood and green I get a pretentious vibe from that store.

I just finished a really cute book called "A Vintage Affair" and am reading a book called Moloka'i which is really well written but depressing. I'm open to most anything but tend to steer clear of fluff authors like Nicholas Sparks and Jodi Picoult .

What else is up with everyone? I haven't been on in a bit.

ooooh! I don't have any great recommendations here, but I'd love to hear other's suggestions too. I've been in a bit of a reading drought and I'd love to find the next great read! Where is Bren? She usually has some great suggestions.

Anyone have something along the lines of "girl with the dragon tattoo"? I love murder/mystery type novels...

I love Jodi Picoult! Heh. But not Nicholas Sparks.

I just finished a book called A Visit from the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan. It was a bit bizarre, and I actually think I need to read it again to fully get it, but it was generally about a record exec. and some teenage wannabe rockers (into their adulthood), and told stories from different points throughout their lives, which were very intertwined. It was very good and kept my attention, but like I said, I need to read it again.

I'm reading Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell. I really like him - I've read What the Dog Saw and also Outliers, and I've heard his other book, Blink, is very good as well. He wrote (writes?) for the New Yorker, so What the Dog Saw was a series of articles/short essays he'd written on all kinds of topics, Outliers was about what makes certain people extraordinary, and Tipping Point is about what causes certain trends to become...well...trends (to tip).

Still Alice by Lisa Genova was really good. It was about a very active late-middle aged female professor who is diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, and chronicles her struggles with that. I just bought a new book by her as well, but I can't recall the title since I haven't started it yet (Left Neglected maybe...it's Left ___ for sure). It also has something to do with a woman suffering memory loss (I believe after an accident), but I don't remember exactly.

Lawrence Hill, the author of the Book of Negroes (wonderful book if you haven't read it) has another book out. I really want to read it, but I don't recall the title.

I have The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo sitting half-read on my nightstand. I just can't get into it. I think I need to start from the beginning when I have more time to devote to reading. Songs of the Humpback Whale by Jodi Picoult is also hanging out half-read on the nightstand. It's the first book I've read of hers that I cannot get into - usually they're a quick, mindless read.

I am getting ready to read Game of Thrones by George Martin, but it's fantasy and I don't know if you are into that.

I am also reading Brisingamen by Diana L. Paxson, but I have put it down.  I have like 30 pages left but just can't bring myself to finish it.  It's about Norse gods/relicts in a Modern Day world.  It's slightly bizarre.

I tend to like Historical fiction and fantasy so I am not much help if you want modern novels.

Allusive- Have you ever read anything by Agatha Christy?  She is an amazing English murder mystery writer.  She has written hundreds of books!  I love her to death!  Also this is something that becummings might like is The Silver Pigs (Marcus Didius Falco #1) by Lindsey Davis  (they are mysteries set in ancient Rome).  Also I am ordering Other book by Wikie Collins, he writes 1800th century mystery novels.

I've been reading all of Tamora Pierce's books. I read a few of them in high school and really liked them so I thought I would re-read them and got hooked. Awesome books if you like YA literature and fantasy, Tamora Pierce is an excellent pick. Just make sure you read the books in order or you'll be confused. A lot of her characters carry over to other books.

I read whatever sounds interesting from the Kindle freebies. Some are good, some are terrible. I just started a Victorian Steampunk novel, but it seems like it might just be a romance with an interesting setting.

I found one called "Reckless Magic." I liked it well enough that I paid $3 to read the next book in the series. It is kind of Twilight-ish but entertaining.

I tend to read historical fiction for fun. I also tend to read several things at once. Earlier this year I read The 19th Wife by David Ebershoff about American polygamy, which I enjoyed as a story but which also gave me the creeps. I also enjoyed Sashenka by Simon Montefiore which is a historical fictionalized romance during the Stalinist terror in the USSR. Both of those books were disturbing but engrossing. After that I needed some light reading though!

Now I'm simultaneously reading one of my bf's favorite books, The Moral Landscape by Sam Harris which is basically ethics/philosophy  ... brilliant but not light reading and a Jane Austen knock off, Willoughby Returns by Jane Odiwe, that I got at a Borders closing. It's really boring and flat though so I may not finish it. I'm about to start reading The Second Duchess by Elizabeth Loupas which is an Italian Renaissance murder mystery about the death of Lucrezia Borgia.

If you want to read one of the better books of the genre, you can read something like Memoirs of Cleopatra by Margaret George or Here Be Dragons by Sharon Kay Penman. They are long but lively.

Currently I am reading both "White Oleander" by Janet Finch and "Sloppy Firsts" by Megan McCafferty. I can't tell if I like "Sloppy Firsts" yet; I haven't read it before and I think I'm just having trouble getting into it.

"White Oleander" is an amazing book. I've read that quite a few times. It was made into a terrible movie with Alison Lohmann and Michelle Pfeiffer a few years ago, but for the love of God, do not judge a book by its film. They left a huge amount out of the movie, critical things, and the book is just so beautiful and rich. I recommend it highly!

I picked up a book called "Honeymoon With My Brother" that I'm looking forward to reading. It's about a man who was left at the alter by his fiancee, so he decides to take the honeymoon anyway - bringing his brother along instead. It sound so funny and I can't wait to read it.

I have a hard time picking random books to read (somehow I find all the terrible ones), so lately I've been sticking with the uber-popular books because I at least know I'd somewhat enjoy it.  I just finished reading the Hunger Games trilogy a couple weeks ago and liked those a lot.  Now I've got to find something else, so keep the suggestions coming :)

    This. x1000.

I've been on a $2.99 Kindle book kick, and some of them have been surprisingly good, but I'm not sure I'd go so far as to recommend them, but they were good fluffy reading.

As far as good ones I've read recently <em>The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks </em>by Rebecca Skloot was absolutely fascinating. <em>Maine </em>by J. Courtney Sullivan was really good chick-lit ish. I'd also recommend <em>Commencement</em> by her. Right now I'm half way through <em>Then Came You </em>by Jennifer Weiner. I wasn't a big fan of her last couple books, but LOVED her earlier stuff (<em>In Her Shoes, Good in Bed). </em>This one is really good so far-also chick lit, but good stuff.

ETA: This is what I get for posting without reading all of the responses. Bside, <em>White Oleander</em> is one of my all time favorite books. The descriptive writing is so amazing. Agree that the movie was terrible. Also, I loved the <em>Sloppy Firsts </em>series...stick with it, and some of the later books are about her in her twenties, so a little more relateable but I thought even the ones set in HS were really good.

yay! i got some good recommendations!

    Books I've read:
White Oleander - loved it and the movie (despite being cast well) was just awful.
Game of Thrones - Just finished book 5 about a month ago and man I can't wait for the next one! And Raven, even if you were reading them just because of the miniseries it wouldn't matter because they're that awesome.

    Need to read:
The Hunger Games - 2 of my friends have recommended and I just haven't gotten to it yet.
The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks - Keep seeing it around and am dying to read it!
The Hiding Place - Never hear of it but it sounds up my alley
I go to the BPL every night so these are added to my hold list :P

    My Recommendations:
Empire Falls - I read it every year. The writing is beautiful and the protagonist reminds me of some guys I know.
Year of Wonders - if it's possible to have a beautiful novel about the bubonic plague this is it.
A Tree Grows in Brooklyn - Just because I relate to Francie Nolan
The Mists of Avalon - Another great fantasy book that was turned into a terrible miniseries.

What I have from the Library now:
The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society
    Trinity - Leon Uris
    The Book of fires
    The Heroine's Bookshelf
    These is my Words
    Stripping Gypsy
The Birth House  read already but loved!

I'm happy that there are so many readers on here! How many of you do goodreads?
