Wanted to introduce myself and maybe get some opinions

Hi! I have been lurking for some time, and never really posted, so here it is! I am about to finish up my junior year of college, BF is graduating with a degree in Architecture this year. We have been together almost 3 years and live together now. We talk about the future, have gone ring shopping, and he is planning on proposing by the end of the year (hopefully!)

I am looking for some opinions on timeframe and/or planning from out of state. We currently live in Michigan, but are looking to move to Colorado after I graduate next year. If he proposes when I think he is going to (December), that would only give us 6 or 7 months to plan a wedding here, where most our family is, before we move. Would that be enough time? How hard would it be to plan a wedding in Michigan from Colorado? We have talked about it and he really doesn't want to do any planning before its "official". We have talked about places that we like for reception and stuff, but not anything serious.

Thanks!

I think that 6-7 months to plan a wedding is plenty of time, but I also think that if you did a lot of your planning in that time, and worked on the rest from CO, that would work too. Especially with family in the area to help you out, I think it would be fine. :)

I agree with Desert, 6-7 months is more than enough time to plan a wedding, but if you think that would be too stressful I don't think it would be too difficult to plan a wedding from a different state.

Beth, I see you are from Colorado. Do you like it there? We are probably going to be looking at the Denver area, as they have a grad school there I would like to go to, probably after establishing residency! I've never been there, but from what we can tell, I think my BF and I would really like it. I have skied all my life and he is a snowboarder. I love city life, but also being able to get away from it.

What is the lifestyle like in Denver?

When I eventually have to plan mine, it'll be from out of state. I think as long as you have family in the area that can help, and can also get back at least once or twice to do the important stuff (venue walk through, meal and dessert tasting, and meeting with any other vendors that you feel strongly about meeting in person), it's definately doable. My girlfriend Lisa planner her MN wedding from San Fran and didn't run into too many problems.

So if you have 6 months before you move, like PP said, that's plenty of time. You can plan all the little details long distance. Good luck, and welcome!

I love Colorado, I actually live right outside of Denver and I go to school in Denver.  It's a great city. there are tons of fun things to do and the mountains are so close it's easy to get away from the city life for a fun outdoors weekend too.  I moved here to be with my BF and I've really enjoyed living here.

Just out of curiosity what grad school are you looking at?

I think today it is much easier to plan a wedding from out of state. You can see photographers portfolios and get pricing much easier through the internet. Same goes for DJs, rental places, and even florists. If you have pictures of what you are looking for a floral consult should be easy to do through e-mail. You can order invitations and STDs from Colorado.

Or if you go back to visit you should be able to get it knocked out in a few weekends if you know what you want and time manage well. A friend of mine planned her CA wedding from NC on school holidays. Just remember, it really is just a big party and nothing more.

Beth, I'm looking at University of Colorado Denver for Urban Planning. My boyfriend would also eventually be going there for architecture. We both will have Bachelor's degrees in Architecture from University of Michigan.
I tend to be a planner/researcher, so I like to know as much as I can about stuff. What are some good neighborhoods to look at to live in?

Everyone else, thanks for the advice!

That is where my BF is getting his undergrad. in Biology and he wants to go to grad school there as well. My school is on the same campus. I don't know anyone who lives in Denver because it's really expensive all of my friends live in the suburbs and take the lightrail into Denver.

<div>Yeah, I figure that's probably what will have to end up happening for us too. Which suburbs are the best/easiest to get to that area of the city by lightrail?</div>

I would say Englewood and Littleton, although I have friends that live as far out as Castle Rock

I planned my ENTIRE wedding in 8 months. I think 6-7 months is plenty of time to get all the big stuff out of the way. You'll want to book things like venue, photographer, DJ, etc pretty early on. Stuff like cake and florist can wait a little while, but I had absolutely everything booked (and my gown ordered) 6 months before the wedding. The rest was all online and could be done from anywhere. I ordered favors, invitations, wedding party gifts, and accessories all online.

DH went to choose suits for the groomsmen at a nationwide store, and all the guys picked up their suits at the same location when they arrived for the wedding.

My mom was a huge help with calling vendors and confirming plans.

Honestly, planning a wedding is stressful, but it's not impossible. You can certainly plan a beautiful wedding in whatever timeframe you have. And you CAN do so from far away if you need to- just plan a trip or two back home to knock out some meetings/tastings/tie up loose ends/etc before you come in for the wedding.

If you have your family there I'm sure you can get a lot done before you move and they can help with the rest. I will be planning everything for Denver and getting married in Nevada. and on a side note.. you will LOVE Denver! There is always so much to do! Good Luck!
