My husband is better at carving pumpkins than your husband. AW

His entry last year (top right) was one of 5 top winners for Blizzard's 2010 pumpkin carving contest.  The other 2 are his entries for this year.

Wow, your husband is cool. Does he just free hand those? Or does he have some type of pattern/draw a picture and carve it on afterwards?

    Amazing!

How he explained it on a post:

I tape a printout of a black and white image to the pumpkin then I poke little holes along all of the major lines, rip off the paper and trace it with pen, so that it looks like this:http://dl.dropbox.com/u/7554664/earlytrace.jpgThen I sit the original picture next to me and I start by carving out the brightest parts (all the way through), and go up from there to the shallowest/thinest lines.I do all of that in the light. Once I have everything done, I take it into a dark room and put my LED lantern inside and then I refine everything in the dark. I bring out my phone and look through the camera very often, because the way the camera captures the image is a little bit different than the way I see it. So I use that to do some checks for relative contrast. I thin the inside out more if needed (this pumpkin was way too thick so no light was coming through at first), and I make lines deeper if you can't see them as well.
