Surprises

So FI is madly in love with the Jimmy Buffett Margaritaville blender thing, and I've always thought it was kind of silly and expensive (they're like $500!). When we registered he really wanted to put it on the list but I kept telling him that if someone bought us an alcoholic drink blender instead of our KA stand mixer I would have to punch him. He relented, but then I got to thinking, what if I just bought it for him as a wedding present and surprised him?

Well, yesterday he was looking around online and found the mixer for half off on Amazon, and told me he was sooo excited and really wanted to buy it. I was like no you can't, I don't want one, please don't spend the money on it. Long story short, he ended up getting really mad at me, and I couldn't stand to see him upset so I told him the reason I didn't want him to buy it is because I want to buy it for him. GAH. I hate it when surprises are ruined!

So..questions:
Are you easily surprised? Is your SO?
What's the best surprise you've ever received?
What's the best surprise you've ever given your SO?

Aw, that stinks, but at least he gets a happy ending to his surprise, even if he blew the actual "surprise" of it, lol. Just tell him to pretend to be surprised, lol.

I've had that happen before too actually. I was planning a surprise birthday party for BF since he hadn't had a bday party since he was 7, and I was coordinating with his best friend. Well, all he knew was that we were getting chummy and texting from time to time so he got upset and asked me about it. I had to let him know that the only reason I was texting him was to plan something for his birthday. Turns out that his best friend has a past record of not being all that trustworthy when it comes to girls, so he had a right to be concerned. I didn't tell him anything other than it was for a birthday surprise though, so when we actually pulled it off he was blown away, lol. So I guess it worked out and I learned a little something about his friend.

Are you easily surprised? Is your SO?
I think that BF is way more easily surprised than I am. He is not so very subtle and not many other people try to surprise me. I'm not a huge fan of surprises actually, lol.

What's the best surprise you've ever received?
I can't really think of any that have completely surprised me. I must be better at figuring them out than I thought, lol. Maybe the best surprise will be coming soon ...

What's the best surprise you've ever given your SO?
I think he'd say it was the time I planned a surprise scavenger hunt around our apartment/complex and led him to a park where we had one of our first dates and was waiting with a picnic for him. It wasn't a special occasion so he had no way of expecting it. He was completely in shock for about 20 minutes after that one, lol. I guess nobody had ever done anything like that for him before.

aw, I'm sorry mookow. I know how it feels to be "the meanie" when you're really trying to surprise someone. At least now he knows why you were so against the purchase.

    Are you easily surprised?
Not usually. BF is pretty bad at keeping secrets, so I usually have some idea what he's up to. I'm pretty sure he's getting me diamond earrings for my b-day in 2 weeks...i'll let you know if I'm right. haha.

    Is your SO?
Yes. He is usually pretty clueless what I am up to. I think he's getting better at uncovering my surprises the longer we've been together though...

What's the best surprise you've ever received?
BF took me on a surprise trip to Glenwood Springs. He got us train tickets so we didn't have to drive, rented a gorgeous hotel room and made all of the plans. We toured caves and swam in the hot springs; it was wonderful and I had no clue about any of it.

What's the best surprise you've ever given your SO?
I got him concert tickets to his favorite band. He didn't even know they were coming to town. I took him to dinner and then was like "we should go drive around Red Rocks." When he saw the signs for the concert he was so upset that he didn't know they were coming to town. Then I pulled out the tickets.   : )

Aw, that does stink.  Although usually around here we just say "add it to your Christmas/Birthday list."

    Are you easily surprised?
Nope.  I'm pretty nosy.  And I don't like being the center of attention, so I deal with it better if I know it's coming.

What's the best surprise you've ever received?
I don't usually get surprised by presents for the above stated reasons.  I used to as a kid, but I don't remember that much anymore.  In more recent history, I was quite pleasantly surprised to find that things between someone else and I were different than I thought.  :)

Aw you ladies have such cute surprise stories :) I wish I could surprise FI but he always overanalyzes everything and eventually figures things out. Although I have to admit I do the same thing too. In fact, I'm probably harder to surprise than FI. But even if I think I know what he's planning, I don't let on!

That stinks, and I know how you feel. I've had that happen to me quite a few times.

    Are you easily surprised?
No way! I am the worst with surprises. I am nosy and will know something is up and snoop or try to figure it out. As a result FI resorts to buying my Christmas presents on Christmas Eve and birthday presents the day before as well.

    Is your SO?
Sometimes, but usually I'm the one that can't keep the surprise in. I'd get so excited that I bought something for him or planned something that I let "hints" slip.

What's the best surprise you've ever received?
I would have to say I was super surprised when FI planned a birthday party for me this year. I knew that we were having my mom come over and stuff, but I had no idea that he had invited our friends and even arranged for my girls to come home from their dad's just for the night. It was wonderful.

What's the best surprise you've ever given your SO?
Ehh I'm not so sure. I tend to "surprise" him with little things all the time. Like yesterday morning he said that he really wanted an orange juice that morning. So last night while I was at the store I got the orange juice for him. He was surprised when he went to get a drink from the fridge last night.

With the bigger surprises I tend to spoil them before they happen.

Are you easily surprised? Is your SO?
Fi is, but I hate being surprised (unless it's a wrapped gift), so I can usually make him tell me. I'm really good at being sneaky.

What's the best surprise you've ever received?
I want to say my e-ring, but I knew it was coming (kind of). I don't know...like I said, I don't like being surprised.

What's the best surprise you've ever given your SO?
He was dying for a Jets jersey of his favorite player. I bought it at a Black Friday sale, the exact one he wanted, and kept it in my car until Hannuka. He was really, really surprised!

Also, funny story - for his birthday one year, I bought him a fleece blanket with the Beatles' "With The Beatles" album cover on it. His birthday is in June and I bought the blanket in February (I had seen it in a store and didn't want to risk it getting sold). I kept it hidden in a box in my car for months. We were going on vacation the week prior to his birthday, and taking my car for the drive down. As BF was loading my car, he called out to me, 'HEY - ARE YOU TAKING THIS BEATLES BLANKET WITH YOU?"

I died! All I could do was sigh and say, "Well...happy birthday?" He was really surprised and couldn't believe it had been in my car for four months without him seeing it!!

Are you easily surprised? Is your SO?
I am because FI is apparently a good liar.  LOL.  FI is kind of hard to surprise gift-wise because if he wants something, he just buys it.  I can never buy anything that he's 'been wanting' because he doesn't opperate that way.

What's the best surprise you've ever received?

The proposal, obviously.  I knew we'd be getting engaged soon, but he was good at misdirection and making sure I didn't expect it.

What's the best surprise you've ever given your SO?
FI has gotten really into photography and his favorite photographer is Peter Lik (he has a couple galleries in Vegas).  His prints are insanely expensive (like over $3k for a small one), but I managed to find a lithograph poster print on eBay for like $75 and I had it custom framed.  He was definitely surprised by that one :)

Mookow, that happened to me last week! My BF wants the Kindle Fire and asked his mom if she would get it for him for Christmas. I knew it was a lot of money for anyone to spend, so I texted her right after he got off the phone and asked if she wanted to go halvsies on it with me. He was so upset his mom told him she wouldn't get it that he started making plans to buy it. He is a very determined person, so I told him not to buy it, to which he immediately figured out I was getting it for him. I was really bummed because I wanted to surprise him with it. But now he's looking forward to our anniversary, when he'll get it.

    Are you easily surprised?
I like surprises, but I usually find out when someone is surprising me, but I try not to get nosey about the details.

    Is your SO?
He hates surprises! I love surprising, but it's hard.

What's the best surprise you've ever received?
For valentines day last year, we decided we weren't going to do anything and wait a few weeks until we had money. I was cooking dinner around 9 and in he walked with a bouqet of tulips and a cold Dr. Pepper. I was so shocked because he rarely surprises me.

What's the best surprise you've ever given your SO?
We'd been dating for two months and I couldn't figure out what to get him for Christmas until the day before our gift exchange. I stumbled across tickets to one of his favorite comedians in a town near Houston. He was so excited, he almost fell running to tell his parents.

Oh, oh! I remember something FI surprised me with that was the best surprise ever!

Our favorite comedian, Eddie Izzard, was doing his first-ever show at Madison Square Garden, and FI bought tickets as a graduation gift. That was the best surprise ever! =D
