Update

So, I updated below (<--clicky). I'm just really frustrated and not sure what to do now.

    To answer your questions Liv,

    - they need to get rid of 3
    - no one is near retirement, that's why they are doing this and not just not replacing people when they retire
    - they are essentially guaranteeing a job and salary for people who choose to leave (they are being really good about that atleast), so they are helping with placing people

The part that is hard is that this does not seem to be part of the cuts that I was anticipating. So, all the efforts that this is doing will not save us from further cuts. I guess I'm not sure if should leave or stay. They chose to do this early to give people the best chances at other jobs before the real cuts begin.

That sucks Hazel. It seems like a perk to be guaranteed some other job placement--but that could be a job you dislike as well, or with less benefits or other such stuff...

Here's a hard question for you:  Do you think your odds of surviving the cut are good?

Yeah, that is sort of how I feel. The difficulty is that the placement I would end up in may not be a choice of mine. It makes it hard to know what to do where there is a house to pay for plus a wedding coming up.

Sigh, just need to talk to FI about it.

Becunning - Based on why they are doing it, yes I think I stand a very good chance of staying. However, they didn't go into detail of how they would choose if they didn't get their 3 volunteers and I don't know how union and senority play a role at that point. Since I'm young, if they get involved that may not be good for me.

Definitely talk to your FI... but also, it doesn't hurt to get more information.  Ask about the type of employment you'd be guaranteed... and about how they'll make decisions if there aren't enough volunteers. More information will help you make a better decision for yourself.
