Not Engaged Yet

I need your make-up help!

So in May I booked an on-site MUA for my wedding.  She's the daughter of an old family friend of my parents and has been a professional MUA for 10+ years.  When I booked her, she asked if I was going to be doing pictures before the ceremony, which I hadn't planned on (not with each other at least), so she guestimated my 'ready' time at 2:30 and said we could finalize details once it got closer.

Well we did our timeline with our photographer both ways (seeing each other before and not) and for both timelines, I need to be ready for pictures at 1.  So I emailed my MUA last night to let her know what our final schedule is and....we have a problem.  She booked another wedding for that morning under the assumption that I didn't need to be ready until 2:30, so she won't even be able to get on-site to me until about 1:30 - 1:45.

So long story short, it didn't work out, I had to cancel my MUA and she is giving me a refund of my deposit (obviously).  I'm relatively okay with it because I had questioned whether it was a good idea or not for me to spend that much on make-up anyways, so I figure I'll just do it myself.

Now I have 10 days to go buy make-up and try a couple trials.  Where do you guys think is the best place for good make-up?  MAC?  Sephora?  Ulta?  Random department store?  There is an Ulta right by my work (I get my hair done in their salon) and then a Sephora store and a MAC counter (inside Nordstroms) at my local mall, so I might be able to mix and match if some products are better than others....  I normally use plain drugstore makeup, so I'm not too familiar with professional level brands.

I think I'd go to Sephora for 2 reasons.  1. They have more variety than you will find at MAC and 2. They have great people there to help you.  Ulta has a wonderful variety of make-up, but I don't find their staff to be as helpful.  I think that if you were to go into Sephora and explain the situation and the look you are going for, they will be able to show you exactly what they think would work and test it on you.

Heck, they may do the whole look for you to show you technique if needed.

Also, if you find out something doesn't work after you've bought it, they will take it back, even if you've used it.

Let us know how it goes!  Definitely post pictures of your "trials" for us.

    Good luck!

At this point, I think you're better off doing it yourself. I think it would be really stressful to try to find someone at this short notice and you won't have much time to determine if you like their work.

I did my own make-up and I have no regrets. For my face (foundation and pressed powder) I used Revlon Photo Finish. It looks great in photos in the professional photos. For everything else (blush, eye shadow, lipstick, gloss) I used MAC. The eye shadow really shows up in pictures, but in a nice way not a tranny way. I went to the MAC counter at Macy's and did the free trial w/purchase thing so I knew which colors to buy and how to apply them. I can't remember if I used a primer or not but if I did, it was probably Smashbox Photo Finish primer.

Let me know if you have any questions or want more tips - I have a bunch!

Ugh, that stinks. On the other hand... holy crap only 11 more days!!! :)

Back to the point of your post, you should ask your hairdresser. Mine is doing both my hair and makeup, and most of the people at their salon do both. At the very least they'd have some suggestions and maybe you could sneak in for a trial this week?

So I've been watching make-up tutorials online today and I'm pretty sure I can get the look I want myself (Kandee Johnson has some awesom tuturials).  I mean, I do wear make-up every day and I'm the person my mom & sisters always ask about how to apply make-up, so with a few right products (I also ordered Monistat anti-chafing cream on Amazon as a primer...crazy right?  But if you read the reviews, nearly all of them specify that use. LOL - just one of my little discoveries today...)and a couple little tutorials, I think I'll be good.

I think I want to go for a lighter smokey eye using purples & pinks instead of blacks (I want to make my green eyes pop and also not look like a stripper at 4pm).  So I'm off to pick up my wedding ring today (I had my e-ring polished and soldered together with my two wedding bands) and then hit up Sephora, which is only a few stores down from the jewelry place.  Then I'll probably do a quick trial tonight (sans primer since it won't get here till Thurs) and hopefully I can master this on such short notice...

    I'm so sorry Jemmini!

This is the list of what I used:
      Eyes
    1. UD Primer Potion
    2. UD shadow pencil brown
    3. MAC shadow vanilla (highlight)
    4. MAC shadow all that glitters (lid)
    5. MAC shadow Bronze (crease)
    6. MAC Fluidline liner blacktrack
    7. UD pencil liner bourbon (bottom)
    8. Ardell 110 lashes

    Face
    1. UD Pore Perfecting primer
    2. Smashbox concealer
    3. Maybelline Dream Liquid Mousse foundation pure beige
    4. contour w/ darker Maybelline foundation
    5. Maybelline Dream Mousse blush soft plum
    6. elf highlighter
    7. NYX brow box

    Lips
    1. Revlon lipstain in twilight
    2. UD liner in naked
    3. UD lipgloss in wallflower

    Finishing
    1. UD Razor Sharp powder
    2. UD All-Nighter spray

As you can see, I ended up with drugstore foundation. It's the one I liked best and my photos came out great. I did use primer, powder, and setting spray, though.

I like the Kandee Johnson makeup video. I think Lauren Luke (panacea81) also has some really good eye makeup tutorials on YouTube.

Yeah...we'll see.  If I don't like it, at least it was only like $6.  But Amazon reviews are usually pretty reliable (with the proper 'grain of salt' approach) so I'm optomistic about it.  I found out because a couple people posted it on the wedding beauty board...  We shall see....  LOL
