Not Engaged Yet

I wrote a paper SO GOOD that my english prof refuses to grade it.

I got a paper back today that my english professor wrote all over it:

"We have some problems with citations in this essay.  I am having a hard time believing that these ideas came out of your own head. Cite ALL your sources!  I will not grade this. Come speak to me."

I was really upset about it, but I've just decided to take it as a compliment. ;)

Have you gone to speak with the professor yet?

Don't they use software to see if you copied sentences/ phrases from the internet? In one of my classes I had to submit all of my papers to this website that analyzed them and showed all the information that showed up elsewhere on the internet.

This! I know there is a site out there that does this but I can't remember what it is - a lot of my friends used it in college  but I never had a need for it.

Yeah, I spoke with her. She said she would look over it again. I don't know if she completely believed me, but I did the best I could.  How do you prove that you just knew something?

We do use that program in some of my classes. I didn't copy and paste anything, it is the ideas i came up with that she is concerned with.

I just tried doing a brief search to see if it would turn up anything. For the life of me I can't remember what it was called. Oh well. That was about 3 years ago, I would have thought that by now it was common place for profs to do have students do this to prevent plagarizing.

I think you should take it as a compliment!  You didn't plagiarize anything so you shouldn't have anything to worry about it.  Sounds like you did an awesome job, congrats!

I think I would be really crabby if someone was telling me that I didn't come up with my own ideas. Over time people are exposed to so much information and media that yes in 2004 you may have seen/ read something that you remembered and have developed that idea but didn't recently read or find that information.

    Good luck!

I had a english professor do something similar to me when I was freshman....then she told me I was dis-respectful towards her. My jaw dropped as I am the most poliet person ever. Needless to say she didn't like me very much and the feeling was mutual.

I have never used the plagarism thing but I had a professor tell me that my writing was too good that it must be plagarized. Seriously??? Its not like the rest of my work was poor and suddenly I had an outstanding paper...I am just a good student, writing is my strong point. You are very calm, I would be furious, but I am known to have a bit of a temper

turnitin.com is exactly what I was trying to think of! I knew it was something incredibly simple, but like I said it was like 3 years ago now and I only used it for one class.

Dude. Same thing happened to me my sophomore year of high school. I wrote a report on gender roles in the book One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, and my teacher thought I plagiarized it because 15 year olds aren't supposed to understand that book, let alone analyze the gender roles, so she refused to grade it, gave me a 0 for the course, and called my parents and the school board about me. The school board and my parents came back and said, uh, this girl is a freakin' genius, and then the teacher got fired.

I had that happen in my last semester of university.  Well sort of, he graded it but was like "Where the heck did this come from? Are you sure you wrote it?"  It kind of sucks they don't believe you but good for you! You're just THAT GOOD! ;)

That happened to me, too, with a paper on sexuality in Dracula. My teacher was cool with it, loved it actually, but when she shared it with other teachers in the English department, they all were like "oh my gosh there is no way a 16 year old wrote this!"

It's like they expect us to all be horrible writers.

When I did my degree, I wrote a paper in one of my courses and the professor said I did the same thing. She ran it through the program and was convinced even though nothing was found that I stole something.

Too bad the rest of my professors from the department told her she needed to quit it and explained to her that any time you start or make changes on a Microsoft Word document, it can be tracked. Every draft and change I made was saved. She looked like an a-hole.

Good luck to you and keep writing awesome papers. The title of your post cracked me up. Love it.

What's really sad is that teachers/professors don't get enough truly smart, intellectual students anymore - and when they do, they're SHOCKED!  How depressing.

This happened my senior year of high school-the teacher decided (2nd paper of the class, written about a different book under different writing circumstances) that I had "used sources and didn't know to cite them-not plagarism".
She also said not to tell my mom, because she didn't want a note about it.
Told mom, mom wrote a not-nice note, calmed mom down, mom wrote another nicer note, and turned that in.  Teacher got mad without even reading the note because I told.  Hilarity ensued, ending when teacher (mid 50s?) gave me (17) the hand.
Then the vice principal got involved...
I guess it is hard for them with all the plagarism, but really, they shouldn't assume good=ripped off.  Especially from good students with no prior history.

That's basically exactly what she was trying to say.  That I used the other sources and didn't know how to cite them. Then when I tried to tell her I didn't use any other sources, she thought I was just stealing the other ideas.

Stinks when you get slamed for doing a great job...That's what your suppose to to right?!   I hate it when teachers treat great writing like stolen goods.

I would take this seriously and make an appointment with the prof and the dean ASAP.  You're being accused of plagiarism which was a huge deal at my college and I thought all of them.  Good luck!

Yeah, I'm definitely going to make a big deal out of this if she refuses to grade it again.  She said she would "look over it and make her decision," so I'm going to wait till that happens.

We've gotten along really well all semester, I don't really know why she flipped all of a sudden.
