But they really weren't eating, they were just breaking the seed. Then they took turns taking the broken seeds and putting it in the cardinal's mouth. They were feeding him. Turns out, the cardinal had a broken beak and couldn't eat the seed by himself and the other two were taking care of him so that he didn't starve.
