If anyone needs a DIY fix, here you go!
All the ready made flower girl baskets I saw were tiny satin things that looked like purses. I wanted a real woven basket big enough to hold a bunch of rose petals that was also appropriately sized to a seven year old.
All materials were purchased at Michael's. They included a round wicker basket (marked down to $1.99), white satin spray paint, teal ribbon, and white butterflies. The spray paint came in four finishes: flat, satin, semi-gloss, and gloss. I didn't want a shiny look, so I chose satin. The teal ribbon will also be used on the bridesmaids bouquets, as it is a great match to the Belsoie teal chiffon dresses.
I used three coats of spray paint to get even coverage. I started with the lower portion of the basket, holding it by the handle while I painted. I then hung it outside to dry between coats. Once the lower basket was done, I went back and did three coats of paint on the handle. After everything was dry, I used a pair of needle nose pliers to thread the ribbon through the basket. I used one piece on each side, leaving about a foot-long tail at each handle end. Once done, I tied the loose tails into bows. Since this ribbon is prone to fraying, it needs some Fray-Check on the ends. (For now, I used super glue, but it dried too white. I'll trim the ends again once I buy some Fray-Check.)
Once this was all done, I tried placing the butterflies, but I decided they were too much. So here's the finished basket. It reminds me of an Easter basket, which is the look I was going for.
