To Call Or Not To Call?

In case you missed it: I had a Big Important Job Interview last Friday...they said they would call "early in the week"...they asked me for a reference sheet on Saturday...it is now almost a week since and I have heard nothing.

I am freaking out. I keep thinking of possible reasons why they wouldn't call and none of them are good. I'm getting daily stomach cramps over this.

A few friends have suggested that I call my interviewer and ask what's going on. They said it shows initiative. To me, that says "I'm annoying and pushy!"

Should I call them? Is it annoying or will it help me?

It totally depends on the person. Some people like that, some don't.

Can you send an email saying thanks for the opportunity to interview and you hope to hear from them soon?

I think it shows initiative.  My favorite approach is always, "Hi Mr. Jones, this is Cate Smith.  I just wanted to check in to see if there was any additional information I can provide you with to show you that I'm the best person for this job."

It's a bit up front, but I'm usually interviewing for sales-related jobs where convincing people and being a bit gutsy is a plus.  If it's not a job where you'll be trying to convince clients of something, perhaps skip the last part... just "I wanted to check in to see how the decision process is going, and to see if there was any additional information I could provide you with in regards to my application."

    Good luck!

I agree with Desert.  You should send an email thanking him and saying you are excited about the opportunity.

For what it's worth, I hated getting phone calls in my previous job where I responsible for hiring people.

However, I didn't hate it so much that I would reject a promising applicant just because they called me.

Honestly, if you sent an email on Tuesday...I wouldn't contact them again this week. Maybe on Monday give them a call. I like Cate's suggestion about what to say.

But I personally don't like pushy applicants.

Maybe if you told us more about the position or company we'd be better able to advise?

I like phrasing it that way because it sounds helpful, rather than pushy and "When are you gonna tell me?!"  And if they haven't made a decision, they can easily say, "No, we're still considering and we'll let you know."  Which is when you can say, "Great, thank you.  Would there be a good time to check back in, perhaps next week?"  To which they can reply, "We'll contact you" or "We should have a decision by Friday."  Again, it's not pushy but it is direct.

    Oh, sure. Absolutely.

The company is a major radio network in Manhattan. My position would be a production assistant. I would be responsible for providing morning show content - you know, weird news and pop culture tidbits and interesting articles for morning talk shows to discuss on the show. My job would include watching daytime talk shows and searching magazines for anything that pops out, or any sort of top-ten lists. I would also be responsible for uploading content onto the main websites of all the morning shows we help produce. It's a pretty typical entry-level job for someone who wants to get into the radio broadcasting industry.

Totally depends on the person doing the hiring. I personally would find it a tad annoying and I don't think it would sway me either way. Did the job listing have things in it like "looking for a motivated self-starter"? If so, maybe they would appreciate a call. Do you have the listing to copy-paste or link for us?

I'd wait until Monday because you sent the email earlier in the week. Sometimes things get held up with the references, so I wouldn't get too stressed yet.

Beads - That's true, references could have held him up. Not just mine, but probably others. He requested three references, but I gave him 4 because one of them can be tough to get a hold of.

Cate - Okay, excellent. Monday afternoon it is.

Agree... you sent the follow up email on Tuesday, and nothing you say in an email now is going to sway them. They are either taking their time making a decision or something else is holding them up. Fingers crossed that you hear something SOON!

I also vote for Monday. It could be they still have one last person to check off their list. Or maybe the person who approves the hiring req is out sick/on vacation/just being slow.

That sounds like an awesome job!
I'd wait until Monday to see. FWIW- I called about 10 days after an interview to see if they made any hiring decisions. I forgot what exactly I said but the boss told me that I had it as soon as he put the paper work through to make it official. The only condition was to act surprised when he called me. I have a pretty awesome boss :)

    That's a great story! I hope I'm that lucky...

I am also obsessively checking my email because that's also how I was asked to come in for the interview. So maybe he'd tell me I have the job in an email too.

Maybe call your references and see if they've been contacted yet?  That might set your mind at ease,

With regards to Paige's suggestion to call your references, I wouldn't worry if your references haven't been contacted yet - of the 3 jobs I've gotten since college, not one of them has actually called my references.  Sometimes they just base it on resume and interview.

I would call. A lot of times they have to chase references down. You will get it.
