:: noelle & hetshup ::

I saw your posts in the Hawaii thread and I was just curious- are you both geologists?

It seems like there are a lot of scientists on this board.  Anyone else?

I am not. I actually work in finance, but that is really where the chips landed once I was out of college. In college, I minored in environmental science and I have all the prerecs to start a masters in environmental science. Well, almost, I need to take organic chem.

I've always loved rocks and science in general, I was thinking about CaCo3 as a screen name. That would have been a bit much though. And I mentioned before, I love a terrible joke. That's my story, and if you need Trivia ever please let me know, I've got a whole lobe devoted to it.

Haha oh okay.  That's a bit of jump- finance to environmental science!  Still it's nice to meet someone who has similar interests (I am a geologist)!

Also, are you sure you need to take organic chem?  I did a master's in earth and env. science and I never took it.  But maybe you have a particular program in mind that does require it?

(Nerd alert!) And another also, why CaCO3?  For some reason it's always been one of my least favorites...

I live in San Antonio, we have a great karst aquifer system, so there is a lot of limestone around here. It's really just me being silly. Yeah, I checked and I need the class. I'm taking it at community college, woot, overachiever!

    Oh I see.  I don't know...limestone bores me.  Probably b/c I'm in FL.  :)

Well good luck with the class!  I'm glad I never had to take that.  I probably should have though- my thesis was on geochemistry.

Ana, Where in FL are you. I see few FL gals running around boards other than FL ones.

Hetshup: What do you do in the Finance field? I graduate in may with a degree in Finance and Management and it looks like I may be going into a Financial Sales position (not exactly what I want to do but a good place to start, I guess)

Ana if you did your thesis in Geochem, you just became the coolest person on this board. And CaCo3 is the only chemical compound that I can remember off the top of my head. If I could recall what basalt is, I would use that. Did you and the Fi have a Mohs hardness scale conversation? Penguin asked what do you want for x-mas, and I answered "9 or 10 on the Mohs hardness scale". I think my BF thinks I'm nuts.

Beach-- I do deal with sales. I work for a large company that works with the military. Sales is really great to begin with actually, I learned a lot with 2008 falling apart. Are you wanting to go to portfolio management or what is the end goal? Sadly, in this economy, any job is good. DO NOT TAKE A COMMISSION JOB!! Ok, off my soapbox.

BBB- I'm in the Ft. Lauderdale/Miami area.  But only during the school year.

Hetshup-  I think that's probably the first time anyone's ever called me "cool'.  My FI is also a geologist so he would've known what I was talking about.  So you wanted a diamond and what- a sapphire or ruby?  And BTW, basalt is a rock so it doesn't have a compound name anyway.  And now I have to remove myself from the top spot on the cool list.

I have my degree in Marine Science and Biology and Geology was by far one of my favorite classes!

Organic Chem is not so bad... first semester was easy but second semester I never worked so hard for a B in my life!

I'm so jealous! I would LOVE to have our wedding at a museum.  Any museum really, but I'm in a big city so it would be way over our budget.  Plus they can accomodate up to 500 people and it would just be silly to have our small reception there.  But I really love museums.  I want to work at one so badly...

I missed all the science nerdiness.. sadness.

Yes, I'm a geologist.  My undergrad degree is in geology, although my graduate work has really been geochemistry.  My thesis is on mid-ocean ridges.

I'd LOVE to have my reception at a science museum. American Natural History museum anyone? Sadly, I believe it would be out of my price range to have it there.

    Yay Science!

Ana: I'm actually about a year away from my PhD (fingers crossed).  I thought for awhile that I wanted to do academia.  Now? Research has kinda beaten that out of me.  I'm kind of twiddling my thumbs on that decision until I get a better idea of when, exactly, I might graduate.  My advisor's been out of the country for three months though, so it makes things difficult.

What are you doing these days with your master's? Frankly, the job market right now terrifies me.

Rickylee: I'm in Providence.  It was very nasty and gross.  Cold rain on top of slushy snow. Ugh.  I'd rather it just snow all day.

My FI is in science also (biology - genetics type stuff).  So we fully expect our kids will be giant nerds. Ha!

Noelle:  Oh I thought I read you were working on a master's.  Well then that's great!  Good luck finishing that.  I'm just starting a PhD program in January.  I know what you mean about research/academia.  I really don't know think I want to do it or if I'll "need" a PhD, but staying in school is really the best (and only) choice for me now so we'll see.

My FI is a geologist too and I always think our kids will have pretty cool lives traveling around doing field work with us.  If we have kids...

Ricky: I think oceana mentioned you once.  I'll be going to the same school as you.

Definitely! We'll get oceana in on it too.  I know how hard it is to only know FI.  When we first moved down here it really stressed me out for a few months until I found some people.  Are you living in Miami?

Man, I feel like an underachiever with my BS in Accounting. Yes, thats right accounting degree, work in finance and am going for a masters in Environmental Geology. Wrap your head around that. BF is a pilot but has a BA in Art History and Business. Now that I look at that, that's a LOT of stuff.

I'm trying to figure out how to PIP to show you guys the rings that will likely be combo'd for my ring, but that also ventures me into BSC category.

Sapphire-- c'mon down, I'll even buy you a margarita! (And anyone else for that matter, no snow here)
