You have to help yourself...

Self Help books.  Anyone read 'em?

I saw a few references that other people made in some recent posts.

Me:

Life Doesn't Begin Five Pounds From Now <---CLICK
I got really weight obsessed, and this book was a good tool.  I didn't take it too literally, because I felt like the author did little to promote weight loss for health reasons, but good book.

20 Something, 20 Everything <--Click
There were a lot of quizzes in here.  It really makes you want to either decide to be happy with life, or grab it by the balls and fix it.
It changed my perspective.  I haven't finished it.  It's one of those books where you read a little, and come back to it a month or so later.

Marry Him <--Click
PLEASE, do not judge the title.  It was really like reading a case study of all of mine and my friends relationships.  It was a helpful book about making priorities in choosing a partner.  Good book.  Long, but helpful.
It reminded me what I really wanted in a partner.

Anyone else read self-help?  I'm curious, and read random things.

    Lately, I've been reading...

Toxic Parents: Overcoming Their Hurtful Legacy and Reclaiming Your Life, by Susan Forward. I highly recommend this to anyone with a narcissistic or abusive parent (not just physical--the book addresses emotional abuse, sexual abuse, and neglect as well).

    Courtesy of Cate's recommendation:

101 Answers to the Toughest Interview Questions" by Ron Fry. Also have his book on the best questions to ask in a job interview, it's next on my list. I'd also like to try her recommendation "Choose to Be Happy."

"It's Called a Breakup Because It's Broken," a sort-of sequel to "He's Just Not That Into You." I like both books, although HJNTIY does need to be taken a little bit with a grain of salt.

I think most self-help books do, actually. There is NO one-size-fits-all solution to a problem, or all your problems, nor is there an easy way out of a tough issue. I.e. I can read all about being happy or why my mom sucked at raising me, but if I want to get rid of the issues that are affecting me, I'm going to have to get down and dirty and really examine and address them in detail. Y'know?

ETA: Wrkn, thanks for the suggestions--might have to grab one or two of those!

I read from the self-help section but more the story kind.

I love the entire Child Called It series - while the story itself is horrible, I'm amazed that a man could come back from that sort of abuse and live a (relatively) normal life.

Same Kind of Different As Me - If this guy can make it, anyone can.  I'm still amazed by this story.

    I'm also a sucker for Hallmark-style movies.

I did just order a Child Development textbook to read though - I really need to figure out what the heck is happening inside my students' heads sometimes.

I am interested in everyone else's responses though :)
I guess, to tell you the truth, I've never had much of a desire to grow facial hair. I think I've managed to play quarterback just fine without a mustache. - Peyton

I really haven't read many, but after having to select a book for my seminar course, I came across a few I might like to read at some point and added them to my never ending list of books I'd like to read.

It's good!  It's AWESOME!  Honestly, the two books I recommended to Marley completely changed how I viewed interviewing and job searching.  I've become a much more competent and confident job hunter and interviewer.

Since I read that book, I haven't interviewed for anything that I haven't been offered.  How's that for a book review?
