Hair dye on my favorite sweater

I got my hair colored last week and my stylist somehow managed to get a big splotch of dark dye on the back of my sweater, it also soaked thru to the white tank top I was wearing underneath. I did not realize this til after I got home so she has no idea. Do I contact the salon and ask them to clean it for me or just talk to her personally? I'm pretty upset about this and now it's been a week or so so I'm sure it'd be harder to get out...

  • Speaking from experience, dark hair dye doesn't wash out.  If it was a pricey sweater, you could contact the salon, and they may offer you a discount off of your next service or something, but honestly, even the best stylists spill from time to time - it's one of the reasons I don't wear nice tops to the hair salon.

  • The salon I've been going to for years now has a sign by the smocks that clearly states "If you value your shirt, please take it off before getting any coloring process done, as we will not be held responsible for damaged clothing".

To the best of my knowledge, most salons have a similar policy and they do post similar notices saying as such. You can try contacting the salon to see if they do assume responsibility for damaged clothing. However, like I said, most salons don't ... and the fact that you've waited over a week already to inform them (Instead of telling them right away) might not hold any water with them if they do.

  • I've had dark hair dye wash out of clothes as long as I washed it right away, though it's mostly old tank tops and stuff that I don't care so much about.    But yeah, it usually washes out if you don't wait too long.

As it's a sweater, it probably needs to be dry cleaned?  You can try taking it to a cleaners to see if there's anything you can do, but if you didn't do it right away then there probalby isn't much that can be done...

I would not do either.  I would take it as lesson learned, do not wear good clothes to get your hair colored.
Why would you wait a week?  It should have been cleaned immediately.

I am a hairstylist, and as it was said above, time and time again we do get it on your clothes.. My best trick I use on myself when I get it on my clothes, is to spray hairspray right onto the stain then wash it immediately, not sure how that would work after a week. I wouldnt call the salon cause there is nothing you can do, its kinda your own fault to wear such a nice sweater to get your hair colored. You live and you learn. But try the hairspray trick next time.
