Out of town guests

Has anyone run into their out of town wedding guests suggesting that you could show them around town the day after your wedding? How are you handling it? I would love to, I'm just worried about being exhausted.

I haven't had this request. I will have a few OOT guests. My FI family is from out of town, so about half will be. Normally at the weddings I have been to the bride and groom leave the next day for the honeymoon. If this is not the case in your situation, I don't think that it is really necessary and maybe giving them a guide to the city through the office of tourism in a welcome bag would be enough. Or if that was out of your buget you could offer to email them places of interest.

  • What?  Of course not.

When the bride and groom leave the reception, their honeymoon begins.  Alone together.  There is no opportunity to show people around town the next day.

The MOB and FOB will have just hosted the biggest event of their lives.  There is no way that they should be rooked into being a tour guide the next day.

If these people want to stay over and explore on their own, that's fine.  But the wedding ends when the wedding ends.
  • Haha, yes, they are grown-ups (two aunts, an uncle, and a grandmother). I was thinking about putting a map in an OOT bag, with a walking tour highlighted out. It's not like the wedding is out in Timbuktu, Nowhere, it's in downtown. I just feel guilty because they'll be coming from far away, and I don't want it seeming like I don't appreciate it, or don't want to spend time with them, you know?

Thanks for the responses. They confirm what I was basically thinking :)

  • That's incredibly presumptuous of your guests.  Kristin is right~once the reception ends, you are on your honeymoon, even if it means you're staying home with the doors locked and the blinds drawn.

Tell the guests that you'll be otherwise engaged, and you hope they enjoy visiting your city.
"Trix, it's what they/our parents wanted. Why so judgemental? And why is your wedding date over a year and a half ago? And why do you not have a groom's name? And why have you posted over 12,000 posts? And why do you always say mean things to brides?" palegirl146
  • I get the whole "honeymoon starts right away" thing, but following our Friday wedding, we were still entertaining family and friends up until Monday morning.  It was all really low key stuff, though: hanging by the pool, meals, golfing, shopping, etc.  Nothing too taxing, and it was a lot of fun.  Had it been a local wedding and they wanted me to run around Disneyland with them (which is what my family always wants to do when they're in town)?  Eff that noise.  I was not up for that level of energy.

I think you can provide them with some good sightseeing information, and tell them that you're going to be relaxing and playing things by ear, but that you might be able to meet up with them for lunch or drinks or something.  Don't commit, but leave the door open.  My philosophy on it was, we have the rest of our lives to spend just the two of us, so we wanted to get in as much time as possible with our guests while we had the chance.

Sometimes I feel like people think that brides are delicate little flower princesses who get all dressed up and pretty for one special moment of their dreams, when really they're just normal people who just happen to be getting married. Things shouldn't have to be sugar-coated for grown-ass women. -mstar284
  • I'd tell them that we'll be busy in bed making mad, passionate love for several days after the wedding.
As my fiance is fond of saying, "Just Relax....."
