Negotiate jewelery prices???

Not sure if this is the best place for this question but has anyone negotiated their engagement and/or wedding ring prices with jewelers?

I feel in love with a wedding band from local jeweler and it's a bit more expensive than I was hoping for.  We also found FIs ring there... and then found the EXACT same thing on amazon for a THIRD of the cost... so I know the jeweler has a huge mark up.

Can I negotiate??  It's a pretty unique ring so I cant find it on amazon like FIs simple white gold band otherwise I would!

Advice please...

  • You'll have more luck with a local jeweler than you will with a chain. It's worth a shot though. Maybe see if you can find the designer of the ring you like and see if you can find it elsewhere.
  • Many jewelers will negotiate.  In some places like NYC, they rarely expect you to actually pay what's on the price tag.
  • It's a local chain, they have like 5 locations around the Twin Cities...

I know it can't hurt to ask, I just don't want to make a huge faux pas and then have an awkward relationship with the jeweler from there on out because I really have my heart on set on the band and I haven't seen elsewhere.

  • Sure you can, since it's a local shop I think you will have good luck.

Not sure if a 2/3 off is realistic since online stores do not have the overhead that local stores have so their mark up is not as high as you might think.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • Oh no, I wouldnt expect 2/3 off- but even a hundred or two would be better than nothing!

I was just using that as an example since you said you found FI's ring for a third of the cost online.

I do not know the cost of the ring you are talking about, but if it equals to a 20-30% discount I think it's totally possible.

  • I know MH was able to negotiate for my e-ring and we negotiated for our wedding bands. It was with a local jeweler not a chain. I'm not sure there's as much flexibility with a retail chain but you could always try, the worst they're going to say is no.
