Odd photos from my photographer...

A friend of mine wants to start a photography business, and asked if she could have an engagement photo shoot with my FI and I and later on, take photos at our wedding. She said it would be free and we said sure! Anyways, we had out "Engagement" photo shoot a few days ago, she edited some pictures and asked if she could post them on my facebook wall. I said yes. When I got on facebook to check them out I was surprised at how awful they were...

It's seems as if every picture had a double chin, awkward smiles, and odd lighting... I got a little embarrassed, then she told me there were MORE on her facebook business page! D: So I checked those out and wow, all the ones on her facebook page were amazing, just beautiful! There are many that I would like to frame! But it still baffles me that she tagged me in almost every terrible picture that she took! Lol! But I guess that's what you get when you say 'yes' without looking first...

  • I'm glad that you still got some good pics in with the not-so-good ones, but to be totally honest, I would be wary if I were you. I know it's a friend, so you have to tread lightly, but if I found my photographer was that bad at self-editing, I'd be nervous for the wedding pictures. Part of being a good photographer is knowing which pictures to show your client and which ones to omit.

Had you seen her work prior to contracting her for the wedding?

What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

<div>I'm kinda iffy on this only because if she notices, it might hurt her feelings... </div>

This is why it is often not the best idea to use friends as vendors. I think it would be a good thing if you untagged them and she said something, because that will open the lines of communication. You can be gentle and tactful while still expressing what you don't like about the pictures. It really is up to you, but I would not be happy if my photographer tagged a bunch of unflattering pictures of me on Facebook. What is the ratio of good to bad pictures? I guess I wouldn't risk the friendship if the majority of the pictures were good, but if you're unhappy with most, I would definitely try to tactfully talk with her about it.

  • I'm in a similar sticky situation. I also let a friend do our engagement photos, which was fine but they are not as professtional as I would like for wedding pictures.

She offered to do the engagement and wedding photos for free, she's trying to build a buisness. I still haven't decided if I'm going to let her photograph the wedding :-/
