NWR- Christmas Traditions

Well, my FI & myself are doing Christmas dinner (late lunch/early dinner) at our house for the first time EVER. So we were wondering what kind of tradition we could start. Got any ideas? I'm open to just about anything.

Is it just the two of you?  I'm not sure what you are looking for.  Dinner at a certain person's house every year is in itself a tradition.

eta: Traditions usually just take root themselves.  Thirty years ago my Aunt and Uncle brought over a Trivia Pursuit game to play that night and we're still playing after every Christmas dinner.  It used to be men against the women but as the kids became adults, it turned into the "grown-ups" angainst the "kids".

  • I think traditions kind of develop on their own.

For example, I always make the cookies. FI always makes the main dish for our big Xmas dinner. Christmas morning we have a light breakfast with freshly brewed coffee (COOFFEEE!!!!) so we have maximum present-opening time while sitting by the fire.

    etc. etc.

If you try to start something on your own, like whoever finishes dinner first gets a lottery card, then that's just weird and way too forced. Let it come natural.

  • Yea I think they just happen. We used to do Christmas Eve at my grandparents but after they passed my aunt took over. The loss of my grandma was still kind of fresh at the first Christmas so my aunt rented "Talladega Nights" just to have something funny to make us all smile and now every year on Christmas Eve we pick out an "innapropriate" movie to watch after dinner.

  • Not really related to your Christmas dinner but .... ask kids every Christmas morning since my little sister was a toddler we would listen to the Raffi Christmas CD while opening Christmas gifts. Even though we are all grown now we still listen to it when we go to my parents to open gifts.
  • Make a special drink, like homemade hot chocolate or cider.

Christmas is our favorite holiday. We start Christmas eve prepping tamales and hot punch before we go to Christimas Eve Mass. Since we're both from huge families, we still gather at my IL's house for dinner and socializing Christmas eve, gifts are opened at midnight and if the kids didn't stay up, they open them Christmas morning while the adults drink coffee and eat leftover tamales. Then it's Christmas Mass and back home to watch the basketball game while the kids play with new toys.

In the afternoon / evening, we go to my moms to deliver the gifts for my brothers and sisters and have dinner there.
  • Is your family into games? Do they have a good sense of humour?

If so, buy "cards against humanity." You can thank me later. :)
