Feeling the baby fever~ Little survey

Hey Guys,

I have been anti-baby for many years.  I held my first baby at 26 and I was horrified it was connected to wires and a heart monitor. (severe acid reflux/warning device)  I never cooed, swooned, or gave even a toddler a second glance. (btw..I am a teacher and I can't stand teaching pre-k music. lol)

However, after a close friend got pregnant, turning 29, sitting with coworkers at lunch who are ALWAYS pregnant, watching my flower girl /BM's daughter grow up, I am starting to get the fever.  It's mutated from 4 Weddings, Say Yes to the Dress, and Big Band Theory to  Bringing Home Baby.

I like surveys, so here I go.

Age: 29

How many would you want? 2 but would be happy with 1 and lots of pets

What is one scary baby story you have been told? I was told about episiotomy during lunch and I started screaming like a baby..lol

How long after you're married? 2 -3 years....2 years

What are the factors is wanting to wait or not waiting: Wanting to live together first, wanting the house, and scared of losing Saturday mornings...

Those who have kids, the questions still apply!

Thanks.

How many would you want? 1 or 2 more! Between the two of us we have 5 already: 18 ds, 16 fdd, 12 dd, 10 fdd, 6 dd.

What is one scary baby story you have been told? 9.2 oz baby was the worse I've heard, but *my* stories were worse- I "flat-lined" with 2 of mine because I was in light labor for days (7 days with 1 and 5 days with another!)

How long after you're married? We started trying after 6 months of dating.

What are the factors is wanting to wait or not waiting: for us not waiting is better because we've got a pretty good distance in age from the youngest!

Help me with the letters please!

    9 pound baby...that is a watermellon....
  • The numbers are their ages.

ds: dear son (he's adopted, I did NOT have a child @ 12!)
    dd: dear daughter
    fdd: future dear daughter
  • We haven't desided if we want kids yet, right now we are happy with our  GSD and are planning on getting another after the wedding :)

Worst story... Well my younger sister was born with gastroschisis, which is basicly they get a small hole through their stomach while in the womb and the intestines get squeesed through the hole.

I was a big baby lol, 8 pounds 8 oz.

And apparently my great grandpa was born with 3 teeth and a lot of hair :S
  • Please my sister was 10lbs 13oz, my mother delivered her vaginally without drugs. And she was 42. Sadly that is not even remotely the worst horror story I have.

How many would you want? I think 3. It'll depend of course on what my FI also wants and how we feel about another after each kid. Definitely more than one though.

What is one scary baby story you have been told? Hmm.. my cousin had 2 big babies, both over 9lbs. A friend of mine was in labor for like 36 hours, that doesn't sound fun. On the flip side, my mom didn't have time for any drugs with me because I was born within like 30-45 min of getting to the hospital. I want drugs! Haha (maybe). Also just all the bleeding and the "gross" details kinda scare me. Worth it, but not something I look forward to.

How long after you're married? Well, FI said something about a "wedding night baby" but I'm not sure I want one RIGHT away. I'm in a wedding 2 months after ours and there are two more that month as well, so I'd rather not be pregnant then ;-) But soon after that maybe! Probably get off the pill in July or so (our wedding is in March). Maybe just do the whole "not trying, not preventing" thing for a bit and see what happens! We both really want kids soon though partially so our friend's son has a playmate.. haha.

What are the factors is wanting to wait or not waiting: I want to get married first. Not because I want to do things "in order", but I'd prefer to deal with one thing at a time. I'd also like for us to get more financially stable. We could make it work now, but I think it's best to wait. FI has a job he hates and it's about an hour away (and the pay barely makes up for it..). I work two part time jobs, one of which pays poorly. I really want to have a house by the time our first kid is old enough to really start playing outside. There's a playground and grassy area at our apartment, but the kids here are pretty annoying.. haha. So hopefully we will save up enough for a down payment by the time the kid is like, 1 or 2. We'll see what happens though!

  • A friend of mine was 11 lbs 6 oz at birth. Holy crow. But she was the last of 9 kids so I suppose it wasn't quite as bad for mom as it could have been. Still pretty awful though. I want one, or twins. I'm starting late (37) so I worry about having one after 40.

How many would you want? If we have them, we want 2.

What is one scary baby story you have been told? A few weeks ago, my niece (Who was actually born 3 months premature, so already been through a lot with her) prolapsed her rectum during a diaper change. The extra scary part was when the doctors were all "Oh, yeah, it happens all the time to people ... and it can happen to women with their uterus as well". When you hear that you, or your kids, can just randomly "crap out" their body parts, it scares you.

How long after you're married? When we first got married, we said we were going to start TTC after our first anniversary. We've now been married for 2 years, and we're thinking it's still going to be another couple of years before we start.

What are the factors is wanting to wait or not waiting: We're waiting because we like having our freedom right now. To us, things like getting married and buying a house were never "settling down", so they never scared us ... but having a baby? That's pretty "settled", lol.

How many would you want? One.  Then we'll decide if we want more.

What is one scary baby story you have been told? Most of the birth stories are the scariest part to me.  I'm not afraid of a normal birth, but a really complicated one (forceps, vaccuums, lots of tearing)?  Oy.

How long after you're married? 2 to 3 years.

What are the factors is wanting to wait or not waiting: We both agreed at 33 we'd start to think about kids.

What is one scary baby story you have been told? I have heard in detail some pretty horrific stories of childbirth. That scared the Sh** outta me

How long after you're married? 2-3 years. We want to remodel the house a bit more and travel before starting our family.

I love this post because I honestly think I'm more excited to start trying to conceive than I am about our upcoming wedding.  We've been together for 5 and a half years, and we're definitely ready.

Age: 31 (will be 32 when we get married in November)

How many would you want? At least 2, but no more than 3.

What is one scary baby story you have been told? I'm honestly just terrified of childbirth in general.  I'm not good with pain at all.

How long after you're married? Immediately.

What are the factors is wanting to wait or not waiting: We've been waiting because we decided that we would prefer to be married before having kids.  Once we're married, we're not waiting because we're ready (and we're not getting any younger...)

How many would you want? 2-3 More than one, less than 4. (I'm and only child and I hated it)

What is one scary story you've been told?  I've heard about someone tearing, like, all the way down her leg... *shudder*

How long after you're married? Um.. let me count. Right now we're both in graduate school and getting married right in the middle of it. The first year of our marriage is long distance, so not then. The second year of our marriage FI is still in school, so not then. The third year of our marriage would be a good time to start, assuming that we're in a good position financially (have jobs and a home, etc). So I'd say 3-4 years.

How many would you want? We're on the fence, one month I want 1 and the next month I don't want any

What is one scary baby story you have been told? I had a friend on bedrest who had her baby at 32 weeks and spend a month in the NICU with her son. She also needed forceps, an episiotmy and the doctor was in such a rush to get him out that he ended up creating huge knots in the muscles of her vagina and she needed special physiotherapy afterwards. Yikes.

How long after you're married? Maybe 3 or 4 years?

What are the factors is wanting to wait or not waiting: Wanting to have extra disposable income, extra savings, be able to travel, going to the grocery store in peace, etc, etc.

Yeah, I had no idea either. Like, I knew it could happen, but I always figured it was rare. But no, the doctors were like "Yup, it happens, all the time. Usually out of nowhere". Thanks, I really needed to know that.

My life was so much better without knowing I could randomly crap out my rectum.

What is one scary baby story you have been told? A friend of mine had to be lifeflighted because they couldn't stop her contractions and her son was born 2 months premature.

How long after you're married? 2 or 3 years.

What are the factors is wanting to wait or not waiting: We are waiting because we already have 3 children, but i would like another one, just to relive that miricle but fi isn't really wanting another one.

Amount of children: 2 to 3 only because there is a high possibility I will have twins
Worst story: My nephew was 13 pounds when he was born they had to stop her in the middle of labor because he got stuck and they gave her a c-section. His clavical was broken from him being so big.

We are waiting two years after we get married to start our family.
  • Age: 30

How many would you want? 2.  I like even numbers!

What is one scary baby story you have been told? I actually lived this...  My twin sisters were born 1 week before my brother turned a year old.  I don't know how it happened...I mean, I KNOW how it happened...but I didn't think it actually could happen.  It was AWFUL!  Constant screaming...they may as well have been triplets!

How long after you're married? If it were up to FI, we'd already have a few kids.  We are actually meeting with a specialist on Monday (I have a seizure disorder) to start getting ready to conceive.
What are the factors is wanting to wait or not waiting: We are nervous about waiting because of my seizures.  I'm on high doses of anti-seizure medication, so I'm already at risk of having a baby with birth defects.  And they say the older you are that chance goes up...even when you are healthy.   So we really have to get on it!
  • Age: 26

How many would you want? 4 or more (FI has a thing about wanting an even amount that makes me laugh, so he'd say 4 or 6)

What is one scary baby story you have been told? A friend of mine had a stillbirth baby and from that I've heard lots of stories. But I'm not afraid.

How long after you're married? 9 months (ie honeymoon baby) to 4 years. We want our first child by 30, but I also desperately want to adopt, so whether teh first child will be biological or adopted we'll see.

What are the factors is wanting to wait or not waiting: I have polycystic ovarian syndrome, which is the leading cause of infertility in women. I may only ovulate once a year or something. So from the get go I won't be on birth control. We wouldn't mind having some time before a baby, but we don't think it's worth the risk if I ovulate only now and we miss it.

The plan, which we realize when it comes to kids planning only takes you so far is this: We don't use birth control but neither do we "try" (ie ovulation tests, doctrs, etc) the first year. If we don't get pregnant then th second year we "try". And if we don't get pregnant, then the third year we start the adoption process so we'll have our first kid by 30. (Adoption can take two years).

Adoption isn't a back up plan for me though. We want both, and personally I'd be okay with only adopting (though I'd like to be pregnant) and FI is okay with only biological (but is fine with adopting) so we're hoping for both. And we both think biological first is slightly better just becuase this way we're new parents with a newborn instead of with a toddler or something. But after we're experienced parents, that won't matter as much.

  • Age: 24 Fiance: 26

How many would you want: 0 or 1. 2 at the max. I was an only child, and I loved it for the most part. I'll never understand the want for a big family.

Scary Baby Story:  Some complication that prevented the ability to administer an epidural and had to have a painful, natural birth (I have the lowest pain tollerance ever!!). Also, in general, just seeing how terrible other people's kids are.

How Long After You're Married:  As long as it takes to be settled in a house and have other various ducks in a row. I don't have a set, "Okay, after two and a half years we'll start trying."  I want to wait long enough to where we are in the position financially to be able to somewhat spoil our kid(s).

Factors in Wanting to Wait or Not Waiting: Honestly, I really dislike other people's kids and get annoyed with them very easily, and that has made me somewhat of a fence-sitter on whether I want kids or not.  Right now I really enjoy the fact that I don't have to worry about child care (much less PAY for childcare), that I can come and go as I please, sleep the whole night uninterrupted, spend my money on myself, and have minimal laundry and cleaning. I fully appreciate that mommy-ing is a 24/7 job and I just don't want to sign up for that yet. So if I have kids at all, I'll definitely be waiting a while.

My co-worker who sits right next to me is in her 50's, married for 30+ years and they had no children.  She's one of the happiest people I've ever met, has a great marriage, and a vacation home.  Obviously I can't make my decisions based on what she did with her life, but she leads on that her life is very pleasant and easy... and it's very appealing and makes me really think about the possiblity of a child-free life.

On the other hand, I know that just because I am annoyed with other people's children doesn't mean I won't enjoy my own. I do secretly ooo and ahhh over cute baby shoes and clothes and think about how much FUN it will be to throw some awesome birthday parties and make trips to disneyland. Deep down I do think I would be a good mom, and I would love to see my mom and dad as grandparents. Oh, and FI would make a GREAT dad.

If we had kids, I would also want to wait until we have moved far away from my FMIL and closer to my family. This is because my FMIL is highly toxic and I would not want her influence around our children on a regular basis at all. I would never allow her to babysit, and if we lived near her she would be all over wanting to do that like white on rice. But right now, I have a great job here in New York that I don't plan on leaving any time soon, so that puts any baby possibility on hold... and I'm totally fine with that because I'm obviously not in any hurry.
  • Age:  I'm 24, fiance is 26

    How many would you want:
I would like 4 kids.  If I could pick I'd have all boys.  Fiance says since I say that we'll wind up with all girls.

     Scary Baby Story:
Well, I'm a nurse so I have seen all sort of real "scary" baby stories at work.  That being said, I am not scared of childbirth, the thought of pregnancy, etc.  I see pregnancy and childbirth as a natural function of life and if you are a younger low risk mother, it shouldn't be to be a deal.

      How Long After You're Married:
Well, I am currently in grad school and we would like to wait until I am at least done with my Master's, which won't be for another 2 years.  Once I finish school I would be  ready to start trying, and at that time I would be around 26-27.  Fiance says he would not like to start trying until he is at least 30.  However my parents had me at 37, my younger sister at 39, and I do not want to be birthing/raising kids in my late 30's.  Too many risks of more complications and I'd have less energy than I do now

. Factors in Wanting to Wait or Not Waiting:
I've just always wanted a family.  Growing up I only had one sibling and I knew early on I wanted to have more than 2 kids.  I do enjoy the current child-free life and being able to be lazy or stay out late without regards to children, but I also feel that when the time is right I will be ready to give that up.

How many would you want? 2. Maybe 3. Definitely not 1 or 4

What is one scary baby story you have been told? My sister randomly stopped breathing and turned blue when she was like 3 weeks old. No permanent damage, but I was scared. A baby died from SIDS at my babysitter's house when I was little, so that was also scary. (I must just be afraid of babies dying).

How long after you're married? For some reason, I keep thinking about a baby now-baby fever! (we've been married 6 months, but realistically, waiting for another 2 years)

What are the factors is wanting to wait or not waiting: We want time to enjoy each other, and travel a bit before we have to cart a baby around with us. Parents/coworkers keep reminding me that you can't un-have the baby, which is a really good point. We don't live a wild lifestyle by any means, but we would like to get some adventuring under our belts. We are going camping/backpacking in the grand canyon for our anniversary. And going on a cruise with my best friend next spring. All things we couldn't do with a baby.
We would also like to be more settled into our careers, and possibly own a home first. My parents had kids immediately and were divorced pretty quickly too. We are both young, so not in a huge rush (although I do stalk facebook friends with babies!)

  • Age:  25 will be 26 when I'm married

    How many would you want:
I would love to have 4 but with today's economy I don't think that is possible so probably 2-3.

     Scary Baby Story:
Def. would have to be hearing the story how my FI was taken out of his mothers arms after he was born by the nurse and then she ran out the door to wait outside for a car to take off! The hospital that he was born at was suppose to be one of the best.

      How Long After You're Married:
We want to start trying right away. I've had the itch for kids for a while. Hopefully by the time we get married we will be living in a bigger apartment and money won't be too much of an issue.

Factors in Wanting to Wait or Not Waiting:
I've always wanted kids. I remember as a kid I had my whole life planned out and knew how many kids I wanted LOL! Me and FI wanted kids right away. They only thing that would stop us is if money was an issue. Since I'm a teacher in NYC, we need to use our own sick time for maternity leave. So if I don't have enough days I won't get paid.  In that case we would wait about a year after getting married. I honestly can't wait to be a mom. I'm looking more forward to being pregnant and starting a family with my FI than having a wedding! LOL!
  • Age:  I'm gonna be 31, he's 23

How many would you want: 2 or 3. I'm from a huge family (one of 9) but I'd really prefer a smaller crew myself, lol.

Scary Baby Story: I'm not really afraid of giving birth or having kids but I am afraid I won't be able to have children. We both really look forward to having kids...

How Long After You're Married: Probably in 2-4 years, although it's gonna be hard not to start trying after we're married!

Factors in Wanting to Wait or Not Waiting: I've always wanted kids and would like to have my first before I'm 35 but we're not in the right place financially to bring a child into this world.

  • Age:  Im 23, Marcus is 20

How many would you want:  we arent sure yet. Im from a big family, so I wouldnt mind having at least 3, but if a fourth comes around I wouldnt be upset.

Scary Baby Story: im not very scared of childbirth, maybe the pain?

How Long After You're Married: right away after we're married. we're both young, yes, but its what we both want. we both had a long talk about it and we are both ready.

Factors in Wanting to Wait or Not Waiting: We're both ready for children. My fiance cant wait to be a daddy and i am excited to give that to him!
  • Age: 27

How many would you want? 4

What is one scary baby story you have been told? That had a happy ending? My health teacher in 10th grade had an almost 14 lb baby. I think he was 13lb 12 oz and still the biggest the hospital had every seen.

How long after you're married? 2 to 3 years.

What are the factors is wanting to wait or not waiting: Financial. I want our mortgage paid off, our home set up and the ability to quit my job and be a stay at home mom indefinitely.  The second we're not totally screwed if he loses his job, is the second we start trying for a baby.
