Re: Any other young or young-looking brides out there?

• i will be 18 when im married...people always think im 20-24 because i act and look older than i am and im really independent...it doesn't really help that i had huge boobies and hips when i was 10. Sometimes i swear i came out of the womb wearing a bra lol. When people hear my age they looked so shocked that i can actually hold a serious adult conversation...because im young was that supposed to mean im immature and dumb? idk lol
Trix--that's happened to me, not at a bach party but when someone saw my wedding and engagement rings. A woman said something like, "throwing your life away because of teenage hormones." So I sad, <strong>"Lady, I'm 24 years old with a Master's degee. Get off your high horse and stop being so damn ignorant."</strong> This was in line at Walmart.
Posted by Seshat411
I love your response!! People at Walmart generally tend to be rude, or so I've noticed throughout the years. I'm curious what her response was after you set her straight.
If you are concerned about it I have found these things help: 1) Dress like an adult.  This doesn't mean you have to look frumpy, but it is time to stop shopping at American Eagle or in the Juniors department. 2) Act like an adult.  When I am in my jeans and sneakers I get mistaken for a high-school student.  When I'm at work people are shocked to find out how "young" I am.  I just turned 26 last week.  <strong>My favorite age story happened when I was in collgee and chaperoned my brother's Jr. High field trip to an amusement park.  I got mistaken for his mom and for a junior high student in the same day :)</strong>
Posted by ehathewa
Something similar happened to me when I was 20. I was working as an aid at an elementary school which was built right next to my former junior high. One day after work I decided to go over and say hi to some of my former teachers. The secretary thought I was a student- then when I was on campus, some kids stopped me thinking I was someone's parent. What's really funny is when I WAS 14, everyone thought I was way older (I looked about 17 or 18), and now I'm in my 20s and they think I'm younger. I've compared pics from then and now, and I don't look a thing like I did at 14- yet I'm still getting mistaken for the same age I was mistaken for back then!

• I'll be 24 this month, and I look like I'm in high school (so I'm told).  My fiance is 24 and he about looks his age...he thinks when we go out people think he's a pedophile! haha!  I always get carded and people make jokes about it being a fake ID.

I can say about everyday at work, my patients ask me "So how long have you been doing this?"  or "So how long did you have to go to school for this?"  I laugh because it's their way of saying I look way too young for my job.  My mom tells me I will be very happy when I'm older though, lol.

• I'm 18 and FI is 25. We don't really have much in the way of problems with people asking about age- neither of us are super social and we both work in professional settings, so there's not much that people would ask about. As long as you act like an adult and can have an adult conversation, age isn't a concern. Several of my coworkers married between the ages of 16-18 and have done wonderfully. Don't worry about it and enjoy this time of life!
• These stories are really funny. I am 24 soon to be 25 in 20 days! But I ALWAYS get carded and I work in a 1st-8th grade school and sometimes get mistaken for an 8th grader. My FI is 28 and when we go out to eat they will card him and I will ask "do you card him because of me" and they are like yea you look young so we card him too. HAHA seriously!? My FI has tons of gray hair too. I guess it's good to look younger than you are... we will appreciate it more when we are older.

• lynzandgreg - lol...that just happened to me.  We were at the liquor store and we were buying our stuff separately, and the lady carded my FI.  I laughed and was like, "they usually never card him."  And she told me I helped him get carded.  We will definitely appreciate it later!

• Not me but enjoy it while you can!  Also I think for the most part if you carry yourself like an adult you should be treated as one.  And if people mistake your age and you're offended then correct them.

Jelique, are you seriously just 16? I am really trying not to be agist, because I like you, but wow. engaged at 16. I can't even imagine being engaged to the person I was in love with at 16. We are still friends, but  I think we would have killed each other by now if we were married.

• I am 22 and my fiance is 21. People are constantly thinking I am 15 or 16, and it honestly bothers me! I was shopping a few weeks ago with family, and the manager was asking people to sign up for the store credit card. When she asked my mom she explained she already had one, and I responded with a "not buying anything today!". The lady then goes" Oh honey, you aren't old enough anyway". Wow. This certainly wasn't my first experience like this...

THAT is hilarious. I'm 25 and people think I am around 19. I automatically pull out my ID at a bar.

My FI is 32 and a high school counselor, and some parents mistake him for a student. He's got the baby face goin on.
I am 19 and my fiance is almost 20. I have somewhat of the same problem as you. I tell people we're engaged and the first question they ask is 'How old are you?' So you tell them and they get a shocked look on their face and say 'Oh wow.' I used to think that I was alone in this but I've actually met / heard of a lot of girls recently that are my age or even younger with the same problem. But really I'm beginning to see that it's not a problem at all. If you know you're ready then why wait? Why not enjoy being young and learning new things with the person you love?
Posted by ejb58
<div>Totally agree. When my mom tells people I'm getting married, they asked why she didn't just tell me no lol. She knows it's the right thing for me. I honestly think it's easier to get married when your young, cause then you aren't as independent or set in you ways and you can kinda just grow together instead of just individually.

• We went out for my 23rd birthday last year and the waitress brought me a children's menu and proceeded to refuse to check my ID for a drink.  After 5 minutes I was pissed and told her to get the manager.  Manager comes out and because I asked for her she didn't check my ID and my drinks were not put on the bill.  Looking young is pain at times, but rocks at other times.

I have the opposite experience. I'm 24 and he's 33. He kind of looks his age but looks more like 28/29 so I never get carded when with him. But when alone or out with friends the license is out all the time and even then they want to varify it's not a fake ID.
Most people assume I'm a young looking 26/27 year old though which is odd. I guess nobody expects him to be with such a youngin'?

The flip side of that is when, God forbid, something happens to one of you, and the other doesn't know how to function as an independant person. There are plenty of stories of people that other posters know whose husband died when they were 45 or so, and they didn't know how to pay the bills, or even what bills they had. They didn't have any identity other than Mrs. X, and they were lost as to who else they were supposed to be besides a wife. A little independence and self reliance is not a bad thing.

• my sister got carded 3 times in a bar when she was 22 out for her friend's bachelorette party.  at the door to get in, at the bar to order a drink, and even at their table by an off duty cop who thought she looked too young from across the bar.

i generally always get carded, but no more than once.  probably because i actually act like an adult and that i'm allowed to be in a bar.  my sister wasn't a big going out person so she is very timid and nervous in bars which i think makes you look younger.

as for getting married young...it's really a case by case basis.  back in the day it was pretty common.  my parents got married at 20 & 22 and just celebrated their 31st anniversary.  BF's parents got married at 19 & 20 and just celebrated their 27th anniversary.  however, everyone i knew from high school that got married that young are ALL divorced.  every single one.  i almost got married when i was 19 because i thought we were ready...we broke up 3 months later.  not saying it can't work, but you just definitley need to face the reality that you are going to have to work 3 times as hard to make your marriage work than people who wait till they are older.  it may seem like a good idea to grow together, which to an extent, it is.  but it's also important to know who YOU are as an individual first

That's me.  Whenever people see my ring they ask, "How old ARE you!?" I have also been getting asked by clients at work how my summer vacation is going and if I go tot the local high school.  My answer, "Oh, I don't get summer breaks any more.  I graduated from college two years ago."  The worst: when I went to show my ID at the airport and the counter attendant told me, "It's okay hun, passengers under 16 don't need to show ID."  I'm 23.
• Some of these stories are absolutely hilarious. I'm glad to know I'm not alone.

I am 26, but regularly get told I look approximately 17. I get carded for EVERYTHING. However, the funniest experience I had was while getting a pedicure during a trip to see my sister last fall. She lives in a college town, and that weekend both the university and a local high school were both having their Homecoming game that weekend.

In the midst of my pedicure, the pedicurist asks in conversation "So, are you going to Homecoming?"

Thinking he's referring to the college one I say "Oh, no... I graduated a few years ago from another school. I'm just in town visiting my sister."

To this he replies "Oh, are you still in school, then? Where do you go to college?"

When I told him that indeed I graduated from college a few years ago, he was stunned. Then he asked my 34 year-old sister which one of us was older :-)

• LoL...these stories are great. As PP have said, it's great to know I'm not alone.
I stopped at a convenience store the other day on the way to work to pick up cigarettes for FI, and the cashier was not one I knew. When I asked for a pack of Parliaments, she looked at me skeptically and said, "You have ID?" So I whip out my license and give it to her, and she goes, "Wow. I bet that's a huge compliment for YOU!"...which I wasn't quite sure how to take. I get that I look 14, but it's not like I'm an ancient, dried-up hag at 26!
