  • Nothing shocking here. I see girls buying groceries with WIC or getting RXs with Medicaid then driving away in their Mercedes. It's disgusting.

  • Ugh that makes me want to puke. The fact that she has such a sense of entitlement. Good grief.

"Ive got two houses". . . . really really makes me want to kick something. I mean, that's great she won the lottery. Awesome, good for her. But FFS, get some ethics and dignity and stop chompin down on taxpayers money. Save the lotto money and find a F'n job.

Thank you! I didn't realize it didn't post properly. I totally agree, completely disgraceful! I can't believe her excuse either!
  • This. This is what is wrong with the world.  I feel sick to my stomach when I hear that people like this exist.  For every person out there trying and working to be independent and take care of themselves, there is someone with no pride or dignity willing to sit by and drain the system.

While I agree that the person in the article is surely abusing the system, I hate when people judge other people's financial situations without knowing the details.  You don't know where that person got the Mercedes.  Maybe it belongs to a family member and they're just borrowing it, you know, because they can't afford their own car.

And there are tons of able bodied, hard working people that ARE working hard, but need assistance for one reason or another.  Like re: Medicaid.  I busted my butt at a job that did not provide me with health insurance before I was married.  I could have qualified for medical assistance.  I did not utilize it, because my H made enough money that we could take care of any medical bills we needed for the short time until I was at a different job with insurance, but if I had been supporting myself, I would have taken the MA in a second.  Because private coverage for me would have been over $500 a month, and while I would have been making enough to pay my bills, I would not have been making enough to increase my montly costs by $500.

And I wouldn't have driven a Mercedes, but I would have driven a decent vehicle, because I commuted to work and my job depends on it.

[QUOTE]In Response to Re: xp: you ladies gotta see this! : I very much doubt that 50% of the able-bodied people in this country have no pride or dignity and are willing to sit by and drain the system. I agree with this.

FI & I had DS while we were both still in school (but working at the same time) & still covered by our parent's insurance. We purchased an individual health plan for DS because we did not want to use WIC or Medicaid & we knew we didn't "need" it. Well, no individual health care policy will cover a baby until he or she has a clean bill of health from the hospital. So that means we got billed for our son's birth, stay at the hospital, all the shots he received at the hospital, etc. which ended up being close to $6,000. We could not afford to pay this. We went & got Medicaid for him & they back-dated everything & covered these expenses for us. Once those expenses were coverd, we stopped using it.

I do have to say though, that while we were at our Medicaid appointment, the ladies who worked there were encouraging me to get WIC, telling me I would definitely qualify for it, it would be so helpful to us, etc. I declined & did not appreciate them doing this to me at all.

  • I guess I didn't really take it that way. I took it as them telling me I couldn't afford to feed my child & take care of him properly. He was breastfed (which I told them), so he did not need 50 cans of Similac a month. I guess I was just kind of offended because I felt like they were judging me.

Now that you put it that way, Linger, I can definitely see where they were probably coming from! I was just too narrow-minded at the time to see it!

My opinion? What she did sucks. But she wasn't breaking any laws. You know what they say -- hate the game, don't hate the player. Well, in this case it's okay to hate the player because she sucks, but again, she was following the laws as they were (poorly) written. She didn't write them, she just took advantage of them.

I agree with you 100%, I didn't mean to imply that everyone, or even that most people who get government aid are drains on the system.  I was being hyperbolic, and I am truly sorry if I offended.

I agree that if you NEED the help that it should be available to you. But if you don't need the help, don't take it. Having $500K in the bank is NOT someone who needs the help. And she is playing the system because she didn't notify them of the large change in cash/assets.
