I want to move!

Hi Everyone...

My fiance & I are getting married in December, we will probably stay where we currently live for a year, but i'd love for us to move somewhere.  We LOVE up north - Vermont, Rhode Island, Maine, Boston, etc.

We thought about California.

Any suggestions?

Re: I want to move!

  • Unless you have family in some of those places, I would move where the jobs are, which will vary depending on what you and your fiance do.  I am from Ohio and lived in Pittsburgh for years, would love to move back, but I know that's just not realistic right now since fiancee can not find work outside of the Washignton D.C. area.

I'd nix Rhode Island.  Their unemployment rate is closest to the highest in the US

Boston and New York have jobs but the housing is astronomical
  • I agree with PP's. If your looking to move, move to a place that has jobs within you and your FI field of work. With today's economy it is very difficult to find a job.I would also consider trying to stay in the middle with family so seeing each other wouldn't be such a hassle.  Me and FI are from NYC and would love to move upstate in the worse way but our jobs and family are here. Since we want kids right away we would need to stay close to my parents since they will be helping us. I know the feeling of wanting to move but don't rush into it. When the time is right things will fall into place. Also, If you are considering having children, look into the schools where you would like to move to. You can find all of this online just google it. Good Luck!
  • You all are very right.  I'll be a Nurse in December, (fingers crossed I pass & graduate!) - so I'll have a decent job where i'd be able to find work anywhere. FI is still in school.

To: ujocdeelovely - do you live in Brooklyn? How is living there?
If that's too personal, you don't have to answer! I just see that it says you're a Brooklyn Bride! (I love NYC)

Living right in Boston is insane and living outside the city is by no means wicked cheap, but it there are affordable places within public transit distance and affordable. Feel free to ask away if you decide to come this way.
Not sure what your FI does for work, but there are a ton of hospitals in and around Boston.

I don't live in NYC, but have family there.  If you were to move there from Kentucky, you'd have a pretty big change in the cost of living.

Also, I am a RN, and wanted to say not all hospitals/parts of the country are as open and willing to hiring new grads as they were four years ago.  Many jobs now only want to hire expirenced nurses, so don't think that just because you're a nurse you'll be able to find work anywhere.  I'd say once you have 1-2 years of RN experience you'll be able to find work anywhere, and that is assuming you have your BSN, since that also makes you more hireable.

  • California has beautiful weather and lots of things to do, but it's pretty pricey to live there...and the state is pretty broke. Traffic, especialy southern California traffic is horrible. Most places are very culturally diverse, which means many types of delicious cuisines! I've lived there the past 7 years, but I'm moving to Michigan in July...I won't miss the prices, but I'm going to definitely miss the weather.

agree with the PPs. you definitely need to find a place that you can secure a stable job. I hear RNs make decent money in California, but I don't know how easy it is to find a job

Not personal at all! LOL! I've lived in Brooklyn my whole life so I'm sick of it LOL! For people who wan't to move here I would say go for it. Park Slope and Bayridge are the hot spots to be now. Both places are near the subway and easy to get into the city and there are many restaurants and places to shop. The only down side is that living is very expensive and parking is a pain! If I had to choose I would go for Park Slope! I love it there. The homes are beautiful and your right near Prospect Park which is beautiful. Park Slope reminds me of a village. Where I live is about 20-30 minutes away from all the action. I'm from Mill Basin/ Bergen Beach area. Where I'm at is very quiet but not much to do. Rent is pretty reasonable and homes are cheaper.

Since your going for medical you shouldn't have a problem finding a job in local hospitals in Brooklyn or Manhattan. Park Slope and Bayridge are near Lutheran, Maimonides, and Methodist.
  • I would not move to any of the areas you just named without at least one of you already having a job lined up - I've lived in both NY and Boston, and the rental market is fierce - I have had to put down as much as 3 months' rent just to move into a place (first, last, security deposit) and landlords will routinely want even more rent than that up front if you are trying to move in without a job or with a really limited (or negative) credit history.  Also you may want to consider working with a realtor, since you're totally new to the area.  Something that sounds like a great deal on Craigslist could turn out to be a disaster, and a realtor will know how to steer you to safe locations.

  • Thanks Everyone!
This 1st year that we stay in KY, we will be saving lots of money and doing lots of research before moving.  I would definitely get a job lined up before moving.
I'm glad I got some advice!!
I heard Park Slope is amazing.  My friend worked with this producer who lives in that area, she said how it's the new "place to be"  :)

Honestly I wouldn't move anywhere without jobs.  DH is from East New York- I recommend you avoid that Brooklyn neighborhood LOL.

    I second that! LOL!
  • I've lived in Southern California all my life. Long Beach has the best affordability in SoCal (I went to college there). After graduating I move up 40 miles to the valley. A small apartment is $2,000 a month without cable, water, etc. Where in Long Beach, 5 miles away from the beach a apartment twice the size as the one I am living in now was $1,200.

If you're looking for so cal feel but not the traffic and you don't mind the blistering heat, then my hometown of Bakersfield. For $2,000 a month you can have a 4 bedroom house with pool, a yard, in a nice part of town and Bakersfield has great schools and plenty of hospitals.

I don't know what your FI is majoring in, but if it is anything computer science/engineering - then he could get a pretty quick job anywhere.
