Did you know that theknot.com message board posts are searchable on Google?

I didn't until recently.

I even had a jeweler/potential vendor ask me if I was the one that posted a particular message. (I was.)

Re: Did you know that theknot.com message board posts are searchable on Google?

  • Yep, I knew. One of my vendors contacted me after I mentioned them in a post.
  • I hadn't mentioned that particular jeweler. I did mention the brand name that I'll get.
  • Yep, I knew too. I frequently google myself to ensure that my privacy protections on social networking sites are intact. You should too.

  • Happiness, would you please explain what you're talking about?
  • Say your name is John Doe. Google John Doe. If you find your FB page, and you have it set to private, it should show barely anything if at all.

Or if you post on here. It shouldnt show up in other places if your privacy is set to high.

I google myself all the time. I found my old LiveJounral that way
  • you can google pretty much ANYTHING these days...this shouldn't surprise people.

  • I did know this.

I haven't googled myself in a while. My name is so common that I have to sift through pages of actresses, porn stars and wedding planners before I get tired of trying to find me and give up. I am also a reverend, apparently.

  • Even though I live near Toronto, Ontario (Canada), I'm also a Real Estate Broker in New York! Hell yeah lol! Wish my name was Kate Middleton however!
  • My name is very unique, almost all of the links on the first few pages of Google are of me, thankfully, theyre all good things Smile

  • Some vendors use Google Analytics to track traffic, mentions, and other things that may be posted by other people in regards to their business.

  • Some pretty epic threads from the past have been found with the help of Google. And for that I thank Google.

Given that this is a public message forum on a popular wedding website, I wouldn't expect anything here to ever be private or unsearchable.

  • I didn't come across a theknot.com message board post by googling my own name. (I don't think I've ever done that.) The first time was when I googled the brand name of rings that I'm considering. I had mentioned it in a post. stacie, how would I set my privacy on here to "high"?
  • Karen, your privacy setting here won't make your threads less Googleable (sp?). It will just make it so that if someone clicks on your sn/profile, it will say "Shhh, this knottie's wedding plans are a secret" instead of listing your wedding date, first names and whatever stuff you added to your Knot portfolio thingy. But the threads here are public information.

  • The knot's search function sucks so if I want to find something on the boards, I go to google and type in site:  forums.theknot.com plus my screenname (if it's a thread I know I posted in) and a keyword.  It works much better.

  • beatlesgirl, thank you for the information. How would I check or change my privacy setting on theknot.com?

Just click on your sn under your avatar, then on the right hand side is a tab for "Settings" (next to your inbox). From there you can choose public or private access for different parts of your profile. If you haven't made your "inspiration board" under your profile then you don't need to worry about privatizing any of that.
