Apple TV

We got it as a Christmas gift and are still figuring out how to use it. My husband has HBO go on his iPad and we want to stream movies and shows through Apple TV, we just need to get a faster Internet first. Just wondering who else has it and how they like it. We are also considering canceling cable and just getting Hulu plus.

Re: Apple TV

  • Love my Apple TV! It takes a little getting used to but it's totally worth it.

  • I don't personally have an AppleTV (I have a Roku, which is similar but less computer-y, it allows you to use Hulu+, Amazon, Netflix, Pandora, etc. on a TV, but you can't browse the web or anything), but the family I work for does so I use one fairly often.  I love it!  They don't have cable, but use Hulu Plus and Amazon Prime to watch TV shows and whatnot.  If you haven't looked into Amazon Prime yet, I totally recommend it.  They have tons of movies/TV shows on their instant-watch section that you can watch for free, or you can buy movies or shows.  I was using Netflix, but after their weird-ness with the pricing and when the selection went down I switched over to Amazon Prime.  Also, with the Apple TV, we put Pandora or Spotify on so we can listen to music pretty often as well.

At this point, I don't understand having cable when it is so much cheaper to just stream everything.  My Amazon Prime and Hulu Plus subscriptions for a year cost about the same as three months of cable.  Plus now I get free two day shipping from Amazon, and I can watch my shows when it is convenient for me, so it's really win/win/win.
  • we got it for Christmas.

just an FYI the HBO Go app won't work to stream from the iPad either through an adapter or over airplay.HBO blocks this capability for some reason. it's super annoying since you are paying for HBO already!

  • i have apple tv and i love it. i download the torrents of the shows i want to watch, upload it to itunes and then stream it through my macbook onto my big screen. its makes me :D
  • We stream through our XBox, and we do Amazon Prime, Hulu, Netflix, and HBO Go. We also got both of our parents Apple TV's for Christmas and they love it. We are debating getting the Apple TV for the bedroom as well.

    I haven't had cable since 2010 and I don't miss it.
  • I have troubles with Hulu like that off and on.  The last time I used it (Friday) it took me at least ten minutes extra to watch each 23 minutes episode I had on.  I also notice a difference in the buffereing time depending on the shows/networks, whether I have closed captioning on, and if I make the show full screen or not.  Usually I can just change shows, watch in the small screen, and keep closed captioning off (my least favorite option) and everything will be fine everywhere the next day.

It's annoying that it happens, but I usually just try to make it work.  It's never bothered me enough to do anything about it.  And, I'm never sure if it is the internet or not, for me I feel like it is the internet more often than it isn't.
  • I got it for Christmas too and I love it!  I have Netflix now and I'm going to be getting Hulu+ (after I try it out for the month).  We're moving soon and I think we're going to forgo cable.  We're never really home anyway and when we are, we're watching Netflix now anyway.
