Kids??!! How do you invite some, and not all!?

We are getting married next spring 2013. We have two kids of our own and have a large family and close friends. Our rough invitation list is around 140 and about 30 of them are kids!! I'm really happy to scale back the guest list to have the quality of a wedding that we want (my fi is a chef and food is super important) and hate to not invite some friends just because they have 2-4 kids. We have been a couple for 9 years and have lots of friends that have a family. But we also have a large family (well my fi does) and all of the kids have to be invited. I don't know that all the family kids will come, most likely yes, but how do you invite some kids and not others?? I really don't have the heart to call people up or say to them that their kids aren't invited. Anyone have advice??

Just make a clear cut off. Like, WP kids and immediate family including nieces and nephews, or something like that. Once you start making "exceptions", it starts to get hairy.

We only invited our families children that live out of town. Any local friend's kids were not invited.

This, definitely. Just have a general "rule," and if someone says something you can just say, "sorry but we are only able to include children in our immediate family," etc.

You can't pick and choose. Make a clear cut off. We did FG and RB only.

False.  You absolutely CAN pick and choose.  Children are just like adults.  You get to pick and choose adults, why not children?  You just have to be prepared to deal with people being less than thrilled with it.
