Marriage license question

Do any of you know - do you get your marriage license from the state you are getting married in or the state of your residency?

-Thanks!

Re: Marriage license question

  • To get married you need a license from the state you get married in.  Other states then recognize the marriage (unless it is against the public policy of the state, but this should only be a problem if you are having a same sex marriage).

  • Ditto Katy. You need to get it from the state you're actually going to be wed in, then file it in the courthouse for whatever county you live in.

  • Get it in the state (specifically the county) you are getting married in. Call the clerk of court in the county you are getting married in and ask what the procedure is. Review the State's statute  to make sure your wedding will be recognized. (like who can be your officiate or waiting period) GL

Why did you do clicky poll? Always call the clerk and review the law to make sure your marriage will be legal. Making sure your marriage is legal is kind of important.

  • Not just the state you're married in, but the county where the ceremony will be performed.  Marriage regulations can vary widely within a state.
This is a neglected planning bio.
This is a belated married bio, with no reviews yet because I'm lazy.

Sometimes I feel like people think that brides are delicate little flower princesses who get all dressed up and pretty for one special moment of their dreams, when really they're just normal people who just happen to be getting married. Things shouldn't have to be sugar-coated for grown-ass women. -mstar284
  • A clicky poll for this question is silly, because it's not a choice that people can make.  It's following the laws of your county/state.  And aerin is right~you need to call the county clerk in which you're getting married and find out exactly what you need to be married in that county, not state.
"Trix, it's what they/our parents wanted. Why so judgemental? And why is your wedding date over a year and a half ago? And why do you not have a groom's name? And why have you posted over 12,000 posts? And why do you always say mean things to brides?" palegirl146

In VA it doesn't have to be the same county.  Look it up online for your state.
  • There can also be waiting periods, if your getting married in a different state you may need to be there a week or two before.  Check early.

  • Thanks for your help ladies.
I was thinking the poll would make it easier for people to answer..
Sorry.. guess I'm not completely aware of the etiquette yet..
