Birthdays!

My FI's birthday is this Sunday. I was asking him today what he would like to do, and he seemed so unenthusiastic about it. He said, "this is what happens in your 30's, you'll find out in a few years." Totally made me sad! He's turning 34, and I'm 24. I know 34 isn't a milestone birthday or anything, but we usually go all out celebrating each other's birthdays, so I kinda wonder what's up. He's also in the Army Reserves, and this weekend is his drill weekend, so I know when he gets back Sunday night he will be beat. Maybe that's what's getting him down?

I thought about just making a nice dinner and ordering a cake from this European bakery we go to frequently, but I honestly feel like it isn't enough. What other small special things can I do, or is what I have planned probably fine?

Or is it too much considering he said, "let's just order a pizza. You can stick candles in it if you want?"

Re: Birthdays!

  • My birthday is also this Sunday :-)

If he'll be beat, just order his favorite pizza. Stock the fridge with his favorite beer. A cake would also be nice.

  • I think making him dinner and getting a cake is perfect if he wants a low-key birthday.
  • We just go out to dinner on birthdays and give a card.

    He's right - birthdays aren't a big deal after a certain age.
  • I'm not a huge fan of birthdays either.  Anyway, just follow his lead and do as he wants whether that's a homemade dinner or pizza.  Cake is always good.
  • You girls are right. It just makes me sad because I LOVE LOVE LOVE birthdays and they are always a BIG deal in my family. We're just going to order in on Sunday and then Monday night I am going to surprise take him out to a German restaurant that he likes. Which is nothing major. My dad is turning 50 in a couple of months though, so I will just put my birthday planning energy into that. Haha.
