Tell me if I'm a lunatic

Is this a completely crazy idea?

I live in Canada, tried on a dress on Saturday and fell in love. Fit like a glove. Problem? The price tag: $4,500 plus tax.

There is a woman I found on oncewed from the states who is selling her dress for $2800.

A flight from my place to where she lives would be $200. I just e-mailed her to see if she can knock even $100 off to accomodate the cost of the flight.

I'd fly back and forth in the same day - and essentially be buying a dress from her and trying it on AT AN AIRPORT.

Am I completely crazy? I love the dress so much so I might not be thinking rationally. It's a 3 hour flight, and I'd have a 6 hour window from the time I land, to the time I'd have to fly again.

Obviously there are huge risks:
1) she doesn't show up and I just wasted $200 on a flight.
2) the dress is a piece of garbage
3) I get nailed at the border on the way back for duty.
4) carrying over $2,000 in cash in my purse on the flight

Thoughts and opinions please.

  • I htink you've been sucked into wedding madness.  Shows like Say Yes to the Dress make it seem like $4,500 or 3K is not out of the realm for a dress that you'll wear for a couple of hours, and then NEVER, ever put on again.

IF you have unlimited funds, and IF you have no debt of any kind, and IF you don't see getting unexpectedly screwed by a lousy economy then okay, maybe.

But, IRL, most people don't come close to spending 3K on a wedding dress.  I'd start looking again, and watch the pricetag before I tried on anything.  But that's me.
"Trix, it's what they/our parents wanted. Why so judgemental? And why is your wedding date over a year and a half ago? And why do you not have a groom's name? And why have you posted over 12,000 posts? And why do you always say mean things to brides?" palegirl146
  • I would never get on a plane in the name of getting a wedding dress. Especially one that came with a "reduced" price tag that cost roughly what I paid for my entire honeymoon.

If this is the dress you absolutely must have, I would seriously consider looking into getting it replicated through one of the Chinese company's like PP suggested. I've heard of lots of girls doing this and it seems well reviewed. I mean, if you were willing to gamble on border-hopping to try on a dress pretty much in an airport bathroom for $2800 (And air fare), I don't see how taking a chance on a replication that costs a fraction of the price would be that much "crazier".

  • I would say that is a bit crazy. You can always find a dress like the one you like for cheaper. I guess if you HAVE the money go for it... if you want to take the chance.
  • I wouldn't go through all that trouble for a used dress. I say either buy the one you really like at 4k or continue shopping and find something similar that is cheaper and I know how you feel- I fell in love with a dress last week at Pronovias and it was over 12k! There is no way my mom is spending 12k on my dress, so I am disappointed but I am going to look for a dress that has the things I liked about that dress and hope to find something half the price.
I've never known anyone that had a Chinese company replicate the dress, but I wouldn't trust it.
  • Thanks for the responses. I think I'm going to do it though. The price has been reduced more and it will be a nice little mini-vacay! I think I'm going to re-sell it after my wedding, to try and get the cost down even more. Thanks again!
