random.... but this bugs me

When knotties are replying to a post and call people "hun", "sweetie", "honey. You don't even know these people. Why call them things you probably call your SO or child?

Re: random.... but this bugs me

  • My guess, it's probably a regional thing. Ever have a waitress call you "hon" or something like that? I hear it quite often, actually.
  • Honestly, usually when I use that terminology, its because the poster is acting like a 12 year old. It's more of a sarcastic response if you get it from me.

However, IRL, my mom calls everyone 'hon' or 'baby' and with her, its a term of endearment.

  • I get called Hun Sweetie all the time. I'm personally quite fond of it! I don't think there's anything wrong with being addressed this way imo!

It's sad when a board is improved by having zero mods.

  • I guess I'm ok with it in person from a waitress or something. Especially when I lived in the midwest. but I see people do it here and I'm like WTF?? I can tell when people are doing it as a sarcastic "hey dumbassss" type of reference, but I've noticed a few new knotties doing it. Newer than me. And for some reason, it bugs the shiiiiit out of me.
  • Yeah, it definitely depends on who its coming from and/or the context.  I don't say it a whole heck of a lot IRL or on TK, but I use it both ways -- term of endearment and to be a sarcastic biiiitch.  I usually say "yes sir" or "yes ma'am" to our patients at work and they seem to respond to that better since most of our interaction is over the phone and you can't read the other person's body language.

I hear "hon" and "sweetie" a lot here in Texas, though, even in Dallas.  I admit, I like it when people say it to me as long as they aren't being condescending.

"Sweetie" and "Sweetheart" are my "bless your heart", both online and IRL (Definitely NOT a term of endearment for me). If I'm calling someone that, it's because I'm doing everything in my power to not say flat out say "How the hell have you gone this far in life without being called a twatwaffle?!?!?!?!?"

*I felt sorry for my husband before I met him. Take a number.*

  • It personally bugs me IRL because the vast majority of strangers I encounter think I'm 18 years old, and it's usually some 25 year old calling me "hon" as an older sister type, when I'm in fact older than she is. When someone my mom's age calls me that, it doesn't bother me, though.

I have a co-worker who calls everyone "sweetie," "honey," and "baby." I think it's super weird.

  • It all depends on who it's coming from.  I only find it acceptable if it is coming from a significantly older woman with a cordial tone of voice.  Online, it's generally annoying or worse.
  • I don't remember when I started regularly using "hon" and "sweetie" to people I don't even know very well, but from me it's just the way I talk.  A lot of people do it around here though, not just old ladies.  Sometimes it is a "bless her heart" or "oh honey, no....just...no" pat on the head.

[QUOTE]In Response to Re:random.... but this bugs me: I actually think I do it somewhat rarely on here, though feel free to correct me on that, unless it's sarcastic. But I'm sure I still do it sometimes, especially when delivering really awful stuff like "run, and dont look back at that loser you're planning on marrying". If it is especially newer posters doing it that bugs you, I wonder if it's the matronly aspect of it that grates. <strong>Does it usually bug you more when accompanied by bad advice?

YES !!   that's it !!    The "it's your wedding hun, do what you want".   "it's your special day sweetie, you get to decide how to have it".

    I hate that shiiiit
