New Years hatch was a success!! Yay babies!

SO, my grocery store eggs ended up yeilding 4 adorable and fluffy babies over the course of yesterday and today.  They're so cute, though I still don't know what breed they are.  I'll call them Whole Foods brand X. lol

  • Ummmmmmmm was that the plan or a surprise? Eek!
  • Yay!!! Adorable..my SO has decided he wants chickens when we get space...If you could have your dream coop/whatever they're called how big and how many chickens.

He wants to raise laying hens and eating chickens (not sure what the PC term is for that!)

  • Haha, yes it was done on purpose.  Eggs have to be incubated for 21 days to hatch, so no accidents are really possible unless you live in a really hot area and leave them at 98 degrees for a month.

And that's really cool to hear rusngl2!  I highly recommend chickens, they are a blast, and the eggs are SO SO much better than store eggs.

I actually would like to open up my own business one day with a small farm that does organic free-range (real free range, not the 4x4 muddy pen that commercial facilities use) chickens.  I'll probably maintain two seperate flocks:  One for broilers (meat birds), and one for egg production.

It's kind of funny, but I enjoy having a variety of breeds so that I have a rainbow of egg colors in my fridge.  We have creamy pink eggs, brown eggs, and minty green eggs right now.  Eventually I want to add dark chocolatey colored eggs and several shades of cream and white.

But all of that is for when we move to a property that is more than an acre, lol.  Ah someday.

  • Haha..... It's one of my fears ;)
  • What's your favorite breed of chicken for eating eggs and personality?

I helped raise some Rhode Island Reds for a family, and they were crazy egg layers!  With 4 chickens, there were at least 3 eggs in the coop every morning.

Also, amazing dream Pele.  We have a few family farms around where my mom works and one delivers eggs and sometimes goat milk to the teachers every week.  Do you have other animals, or just chickens?
  • My neighbor who we get eggs from gets a different breed every year; that way she can tell when the old chickens stop laying and can be gotten rid of.

OP, did you really buy them from the store? I wasn't aware you could get fertilized eggs safe to hatch from a general grocery store.
  • They are so cute. My dad has baby chickens right now, but they're at that awkward stage where they look funny because they're losing fuzz and growing feathers. I just like to sit and watch them when I'm there. Is that weird?
  • Eeee!! Now I want fresh eggs.

</div><div>Don't tell my fancy purebred Faverolle hens, but I really enjoy my hybrid layers called Gold Comets.  They lay ginormous eggs (like, larger than grocery store jumbo) religiously.  They're a cross of either Rhode Island Red or New Hampshire for the father, and a White Rock mother (genders have to be specific for a genetic reason i won't bore you with).</div><div>
</div><div>I'd really love to have other animals, but right now I live on a small suburban property, and I don't fancy being a hoarder :P.  Someday it'd be nice to have Alpacas, turkeys, and maybe even Emus if I can convince my husband (he just gives me scared eyes when I keep adding weird animals to the list).</div><div>
</div><div>Here's a pic of the eggs I get.  The green one is about the size of a grocery store large.  Unfortunately, my camera phone doesn't pick up the green really well, but some  of it shows here:</div><div>

</div><div>Oh!  And every spring we hatch and grow out some turkeys, then hand them over to some friends to finish growing when they get too big for the brooder.  Here's the babies from last spring, when they got moved to my friends' bigger property:</div><div>

</div><div>Yes, I did get them from my local Whole Foods!  I first heard about it on <a href="http://www.backyardchickens.com," rel="nofollow">www.backyardchickens.com,</a> and it tickled my funnybone so much that I decided to try it.</div><div>
</div><div>I have NO idea why people seek out fertilized eggs, but some new aged organic grocery stores carry cartons of fertilized eggs (magical enzymes? I dunno).  The cartons are clearly marked as fertilized.  </div><div>
</div><div>I just had to buy some when I saw them at our new Whole Foods, and try hatching them!  Whadda ya know, it worked!  </div>

  • How cute! For a while, I only bought free range eggs but they are so expensive.

  • Darling!!!

I'd love to have chickens some day ... if I can convince FI and we find some property.  Right now we're having a hard enough time finding a place to live with 5 fur-babies!
