Oh how I love surprise guests! -Vent-Long

So next week DH family was coming down from CT to NC and they're renting a house on the outterbanks for the week. DH was going to go visit them for a couple days and depending on how my week goes I might join him.

Its easter break next week, but I've got three tests and a ton of last minute assignments to finish up since it's also the end of the semester. I've also agreed to watch the dogs (3) for some friends we know that are expecting to deliver their first little boy on the 25th (could be sooner or later). Regardless, my plate is slammed, but nothing I can't handle.

Over all, I'd like to go to the beach, but it's going to be DH's parents, two of his siblings, his aunt, and her two little ones. Then throw in DH and possibly me and that's one heck of a house full! It also depends on how much work I get finished and our friends delivery.

So. . that's all good though. That's not what has completely thrown me off.

I just found out that they're ALL going to be here at our house on Saturday and staying until Monday. We have a decent sized home 1700sqft, but its only 3 bedrooms and 2.5 baths. We also have two dogs, two cats and a hedgehog (but she doesn't bother anyone).

So our house is going to be a zoo!!! Holy Jebus!!! I will say though, I'm thankful that I'm getting warning now rather than on Friday night. Guess I'll throw the studying into full gear since I know nothing will get done over the weekend.

Sorry if this makes no sense. Thanks for listening!

  • Mm they 'forgot' to tell us earlier that they were stopping here on their way to the outterbanks (we're about 4-6 hours from there depending on which part you go to).

I mean, we hardly see them, so its not a HUGE deal. It's just that I've got so much work due next week, it's not exactly 'good timing'. Regardless though, we're happy to have them and would love to see them, but yeah, some advance notice would have been nice. Like I said though, at least I know now and am not finding this out on Friday night

I just needed to vent Lol.

  • Wow. You are nicer than I am. I probably would have said no way to that - they "forget" to tell you they're staying two nights!? I get really weird about my space being invaded anyway, even with lots of preparation, so I can't imagine that being dumped on me in the middle of finals! I do it to myself, but I just feel like I have to entertain/cook constantly when people are at my house.

  • That does sound like one full house! Definitely try to get as much studying done as possible before everyone arrives. Just please don't tell me you have to do all the cooking- order pizza!

Im the same way. . .with my family, they're more laid back and aren't a big deal. But with DH's family, Im still in that phase where I feel like I constantly have to make sure they're ok and dont need anything yadda yadda yadda.
I've already decided though that I'm taking an hour or two to myself sat and sun night for quiet and study time.

I have no idea what they're wanting to do for dinner. We have frozen burgers. Sooo DH will probably be grilling at some point.

  • I sympathize. I like people to ask before they visit, too. A somewhat similar thing happened when I was married to my first husband. His family didn't live in the town where we went to college. They decided to come and visit the week before he graduated. His mother, sister, brother-in-law, and two nieces--five additional people--added to our one-bedroom house. Plus, I wasn't graduating so I had finals that week. A friend of mine was out of town and offered me her apartment. I went. Later, my husband joined me leaving his family to fend for themselves in our house. :-) Do you happen to have a photo of your hedgehog?

  • This is Harriet :)

  • Awwww I want a Harriet! So cute!!

I sympathize with you too. I am not a fan of unexpected guests. But I think they will know that you have lots going on and hopefully not be too much of a bother.

When you handle her, sometimes she gets you with her quills, but they don't hurt too bad. She's never purposely poked the other animals. I mean, they've sniffed her before, kind of like "what on earth are you" and she'll huffle into a ball and has accidently poked them. For the most part though, they dont mess with her.

When we have her out, she usually just scampers around on the couch or blanket that we put on the floor for her to play in.

DH made the mistake of letting our first hedgie Chance (RIP) walk around on our bed a year or so ago. One of his quills got loose and stuck in the sheets and we didn't know it until I rolled over on it later that night. Little sucker hurt!

  • FI's parents do that all the time, luckily it's just 4 of them (his parents and 2 brothers).  They just called us yesterday to say they were coming up for the weekend, so now I have to go home today and start cleaning.  I usually don't mind though, I like his family.  The only bad thing when they come is that we usually go out to eat (they are from a small town about 3 hours away, so they don't have a lot of good restaurants, so they make up for it when they come here), so we end up spending a lot of money and it's hard to eat healthy.

  • Thanks for sharing the photo of Harriet. I'd never heard of a pet hedgehog or seen one.

    No prob ! :)
Honestly, I had heard of them when I was reallly little (during the Sonic the HedgeHog phase) but as I got older I didn't know people still got them as pets. Then DH (at that point just boyfriend) really wanted one, so I looked into it and we got Chance (rescue).

I believe though, some states don't allow them to be kept as pets?? I might be wrong, but I *think* its similar to the whole Ferret deal where if you have them as pets in certain areas, it's actually illegal.

He was a cool little dude and LOVED bathtime. :)
