Really?  My question is: Stupid or not?  I'd think stupidity, laziness, etc contributed to this.  I wouldn't suggest that a server intentionally gave a child a margarita.

  • Heard about this on the radio this morning. INSANE.

Some bartenders were calling in saying that it was possible that the waitress had grabbed the sip cup the bartenders use to conceal their drinks from management. Not sure if that's 100% believable, but if its something that goes on at restaurants, it might be possible.

Could you even imagine!?!? Huge lawsuit coming their way...

  • Your child is ''acting funny'' and you call the police instead of bringing your child to the hospital or calling an ambulance?  What if it was an allergic reaction?  How did parents come to the conclusion that the restaurant was at fault and had to call the police?  Seems like a cash grab to me.  I don't know but my first instinct if a child is acting differently is to check if he's ok, not call the cops to investigate the premises.

I used to work at a large chain restaurant and this happened all the time, now they never got served to children but kids cups full of alcohol were in the bar and service areas pretty often.  I could totally believe that would happen. Thats one the many reasons the bar staff never put lids on kids cups we would serve. (The bar had all the milk, OJ and made kids milkshakes.)
  • Well then you have to wonder there's ALWAYS parents out there that are willing to put their childs health at risk in order to win a lawsuit.  not saying that's the case with this story but you never know.

Some of the comments on the story are pretty funny though, depsite the seriousness of the situation.

"I think they spike all the drinks at Applebees with alcohol so as to distract the customer from the awful tasting food...."

"the parents knew something was wrong when the child started hitting on the waitresss"...

To be quite honest, that's exactly what it looks like from what's written in this particular article.  They tested the cup alcohol level....what's the toddler blood alcohol level?  Not written.  If your baby has ingested alcohol would you not want to bring him to a doctor to make sure no damage or to prevent any further damge from happening?  I think yes so why is it not written that the child has gone to the hospital or has seen a doctor?  Why is there no ambulance at the scene?  How did the police *know* to verify the cup and test it for alcohol?  It looks overall very, very fishy to me.

I'm truly hoping that the author of this article simply omitted that information.  If not, I would be worried for this baby's safety because it really does seem like the parents were trying to make money off of it.

My guess: Parent buys alcoholic drink, puts some in the baby's apple juice and calls the cops when he starts ''acting funny'' whether he ingested it or not (since we don't know if the baby actually drank the alcohol....) and decides to blame it on Applebees.

  • I agree with Cynthia. My first thought was that the parent's spiked their kids drink, I'm way too cynical LOL.
Although people do make mistakes, I can't understand how 1, a mixed drink with apple juice(??) would even end up in an identical to apple juice container, and 2, not have been thrown out? Why would they keep an old drink??

What drinks have apple juice in them??
  • I am surprised that I toddler would even drink something spiked.  Heck I don't even like the taste of margaritas.  Did they bribe him to drink it if it was a set up?  I would think they would have too.  I don't have any small children myself though...
  • I agree with PPs..if my kid is acting in anyway strange I would for sure take him to the hospital ASAP and THEN get the cops involved.
  • Really?  You REALLY think they'd do that intentionally?  HAHA IT WOULD BE SO FUN TO GET SOMEONE'S BABY DRUNK!!!  No.

Actually a local restuarant where I (used to) live had a case 2 years back where a disgruntled employee poisoned innocent restaurant patrons food (they all ended up in the hospital) to get back at the manager. you NEVER know what people will do.

I think the bigger crime here would be that she served alcohol to a minor. Some people are just too lazy to check IDs these days...

    Exactly!

I heard about this on the radio yesterday. I think there are a few stories going around because I heard that they did take the child to the ER and then called the police. Who knows. I think that it is a horrible thing and could happen. I rarely pick up the cup that my child gets at a restaurant and check it before she drinks from it.  I hope that the child is okay and I would OWN that Applebee's.

  • I swear this happened a few years back when I  was in college & worked there (not at the one I worked for, I think it was one in NY). The bartender made a server a drink in a kid's cup & then another server accidentally served it to a table, thinking it was juice.

    I guess it's actually happened 3 times now: http://www.cbn.com/cbnnews/us/2011/April/Toddler-Mistakenly-Served-Alcohol-at-Applebees-/

  • I used to work at a chain restaurant, and I remember a time that a kid accidently got a drink that had alcohol in it.  I can't remember exactly how it happened... but I do remember the face of the manager when he realized that the drink had gotten taken out to the table.  He looked horrified and went running to the table.  I don't think the kid drank the whole thing before the manager got out there; he explained the mistake to the parents, and no cops were called.  Best bet, check the kids' drinks before they do at the restaurants!
