This is going to sound ridiculous, but it has me really frustrated.

I made my little inner bride ckick thinking that if I uploaded it as my avatar, it would be just the head shot (like i've seen so many of you ladies have). Of course, it's not. How the heck do I get the head shot?!

did you save the picture of your avatar and then search and upload it? 

Somewhere there's a checkbox to make your inner bride your avatar.  That's how you get the head shot.

ETA: GOT IT!!!  Go to the inner bride thing, go to your gallery, and click the icon that looks like a disk drive under the image that you want to use.
