Did you ask the shop if they will store it for you?  My daughter found her dress in January and won't marry until June, 2011.  The shop stores it, free of charge....and actually almost insisted.  It will be in a climate controlled room.  The gown really should not touch anything else....and the type of "bag" it is stored in will matter as well----the dress can fade, absorb smells, etc.  It might be worth the few $$'s to either pay the shop to hang onto it or check with local dry cleaners or even fur stores.  Good luck!
  • If the store will not keep it for you, then get a breathable garment bag. You can find them on eBay for ~$20 (maybe a bit less).  The dress needs to be stored in a dry, cool place and out of direct sunlight.  The sunlight can cause fading of the fabric..  GL!

  • Perhaps because I've worked retail my entire adult life, I personally wouldn't leave it at the bridal salon.  There is absolutely no way that employees there could care about my dress nearly as much as I could.  I also have seen enough things on hold get lost and I just wouldn't want to deal with that.

I would purchase a real garment bag if you dress only comes in a cheap plastic garbage bag style garment bag.  Just hang it in a closet for the next several months.  My dress was too long to hang from the bar and I actually had my husband hang a hook from the ceiling in the closet.  It will get wrinkled in the bag (especially if there is a train), but this is not a big deal.  Your seamstress will steam/press your dress after the alterations.

  • Me too - July 2011 wedding and I bought my dress in December.  I have it stored in a garment bag and it is hanging somewhere cool and dry.

  • actually laying it flat is better for the dress.  Most dresses are quite heavy and can stretch if hung for that long of time.  In a breathable garmet bag under your bed would be great.  It will be wrinkled no matter what so I would reccomend getting it cleaned/ pressed before the wedding.

  • I got mine a year before the wedding - it seems to be doing OK in the garment bag in teh closet :)

  • I bought my dress just over a year out from my wedding.  The sales lady recommended keeping it loosely wrapped in a white 100% cotton sheet and laid flat.

For around $20, I got a full size white sheet at Target and kept my dress wrapped in that and laid out on the bed in our guest room.  It held up great and needed only a quick steaming after the alterations.
  • The lady that did my alterations has a storage option.  You could call around.
