Addressing military titles

My friend's husband is a Major in the Marines. How should I address their invite?

Major and Mrs. Jean Luc Picard?

A friend who is a Lieutenant in the Navy told me I should address him as Mr. because I know him socially outside of the military and since it isn't a military event he shouldn't be addressed that way. What say you?

Re: Addressing military titles

  • My FI is also a naval officer and I asked him. He said either way is acceptable but if it's a non military wedding Mr. And Mrs. seems more appropriate if you know them outside the military world. :D
  • Thank you very much!

  • One of our guests is in the military and I asked him what he wanted on his invite. He said as long as he is in the country and not deployed I was supposed to use Mr. not the military title. So I would check with him on how he prefers it.

It's not impropper to use a military title, even if you know him outside of the military. And I've never heard anyone say it's impropper to use it if he is in the country and not deployed....that's just ridiculous.   I'm active duty btw....even if you are sending mail to someone who IS deployed you shouldn't use their rank.   That guy doesn't know what he's talking about.

    This is what Crane's suggests:

Major and Mrs. John Juc Piccard

or if it was the woman who is active duty, then it would be

    Major Jane Piccard, and
    Mr. John Luc Piccard
